[mt107cs] Circuit Wound – ‘Succumbing to the Inevitable Automation’ C46
mt107csA concept album recorded in 2011 and left to simmer until the proper relevant cultural boiling point, Circuit Wound returns to MT after 15 years. Dystopian, apocalyptic hellfire/damnation acid burn electronics, owing a great debt the Japanese — in particular, Thirdorgan and MSBR. Hard-panned, dynamic psychedelic noise waves with occasional moments of breathing room. Crank it up and celebrate the modern collapse.

[mt108cs] Cremation Lily – ‘Journal’ C20
mt108cs Recorded entirely with compact tape machines, maximizing potential through simplicity. A sort of audio diary documenting Zen Zsigo’s daily reflections from morning to night along the British coast through a filter of tape-loop processing. Kay Hill and False Moniker provide additional source material. Best heard in the misty early morning hours, on repeat till late night.

[mt109cs] False Moniker – ‘In Parenthesis’ C30
mt109csKnown for his visual work, his label Audio. Visuals. Atmosphere., as well as his many collaborations with Cremation Lily, False Moniker is the project of Belgian artist Niels Geybels, who also works as Sequences. This is considered by the artist to be the debut full length release of FM. Six tracks of minimal and narrative industrial bedroom melodicism, intimately documented on 4-track cassette. Each cassette released in an edition of 125 copies.

cfe60Nylon string guitar from Asheville’s Shane Parish and percussion from Chicago’s Frank Rosaly. Skittering and precise, spacious and loose. [CFE#61] Ilia Belorukov & Taneli Viitahuhta – ‘Sax Worker’s Rights’ C30
cfe61Alto saxophones from Saint-Petersburg’s Ilia Belorukov and Helsinki’s Taneli Viitahuhta. Popping and hissing through brass valves. The tiny sounds from catching breath in a bottle and letting it out slowly. Insects buzzing in figure-eights slowed to a warm sputtering. Tying knots in the air.

Cruel Nature

Bird People – ‘Lahn Sunset Drone’ CS
cn068Formed in 2010 by multi-instrumentalist Uli Rois, Austrria’s Bird People have explored the power of the drone through a variety of music styles. Since 2015, Bird People have operated as a collective, with a varying cast of players and collaborators; centred around acoustic drone sounds and psych folk, taking an aural trip along similar paths as Woven Skull. Their latest release was recorded on the “Constellations” tour during the summer of 2015 and is the full performance from Marburg, Germany. Although stripped to just a core trio, the instrumentation used is staggering: banjo, singing saw, recorder, bells, bowls, harmonicas, shruti box, cello, fiddle, gong; hypnotic interweaving sounds through the windmills of your mind. Limited to 40 copies world-wide, with artwork by Nik Hb and design by James Watts.

CN067: Posset/Yokonono CS
cn067Experimental soundclash!! On one side, we have Newcastle’s Posset. A veteran of the genre, Mr Joe Murray pulls no punches with 5 tracks of lo-fi abstract improvisation via the medium of dictaphone, guitar, soft mouth parts and gonk poetry. And on the flip side, we have Sheffield’s Yokonono, pummeling the senses with a single track of evolving compelling engaging drone; working the field that the likes of Culver harvest. Distorted imagery by James Watts. Limited to 35 copies.

CN065: Mirrored Lips – ‘MOM’ CS
cn065In their own words, Mirrored Lips is an aquarium where the three of them — Lusya, Ksusha and Sasha — are swimming. If you were to dive in, you would hear an overloaded mic transmitting poetry accompanied by the relentless roar of Russian backline. The band sees and expresses itself best through improvisation and was intended to be a free-jazz studio project. In my words, Mirrored Lips could lazily be tagged as “riot grrrl”; and whilst the tracks do carry an air of garage punky menace, to me they echo the experimentation of post-punk bands such as late-period Slits, The Raincoats and maybe a touch of the Au Pairs. Their first physical format release out of their native Russia, this is super limited to 30 copies only. Look out for them on their first UK tour, planned for early 2017.

Palm Tapes

Northern Palms – ‘Volume One’ C54 $5
smallnorthern-palmsNorthern Palms Volume One is a compilation of Canadian house and electronic music. The start of a series on the North, it features four artists, and begins along the Speed River in Guelph. Here, Brian Schirk, AKA “M. Walter,” rides his bike into flora hugging city limits. There is dystopia in his tracks, but also fresh and airy futurist breeze – elegance with disconcerting sterility beneath. Then, it’s northeast to a peninsula of sea cliffs and ocean expanse. The aural offerings of Halifax’s Nate Doucet, AKA “ADO,” mirror rugged nature’s stubborn force; hypnotic drums are a biofilm slowly coating. Montreal’s Graeme Stewart, AKA “Burn Cycle,” kicks off the reverse side. His celebratory tunes are soft-focus, galaxy-groove, fun. His arrangements, spacious and effective, beam patterns of sunshine to the dance. Lastly, Toronto’s Jordan Pearson, AKA “Motoko,” matches playful melody with vivd mood, creating a transporting beach-side vibe. House nods and Sakamoto-esque synth paint a sea-breeze dream concluding the tour. It’s easy for this tape to make heavy rotation; it’s always a pleasure.

Computer Says No – ‘Enfant Terrible’
ppt37-promoOnce again, after a series of discrete electroacoustic improvisation, tapping sounds are coming from the storage space. This time, a horrible kid got stuck there while falling into a tangle of tentacles made of grempline and stylon, which for years of being necrotic, suddenly came to life under the influence of the youthful energy vibration. Now the disobedient whipster is vainly trying to cross the cubby’s walls by imposing rhythmic kicks in the harl matter and all this to the prelude of an ominously rustling crash textile. New music of Jakub Pokorski (in this case operating under the name ‘Computer Says No’) is a dark and minimalist material, which will please both enthusiasts of rhythmic structures, and those who like to immerse themselves into the world of diversified textures.

Ross Manning – ‘Deforming A Virtual Ribbon’ C32
ross-manning-100x100Ross Manning is a contemporary new media artist based in Brisbane, in Australia, working with optics, projection, light and sound. His music is already released by respectful music labels as Vitrine, Greedy Ventilator and Room40. “Deforming A Virtual Ribbon” is the outcome of Ross Manning long experimentation with sound and interactive music systems, starting with technology behind them, produced by his automated instruments. The album includes 4 new compositions, mixing DIY electronics, radio-voice, hypnotic drone sounds and chaotic noisy percussion produced by his shelf-made string pannel. Ltd. edition of 100 white cassettes.Artwork by Ross Manning, representing musical instruments that it was used for the recordings.

He is a very active noise performer of the Tokyo underground scene, blues connoisseur, guitars collector and last but no least he is the man behind Silent Novels Records activities. DK059 Luca Sigurtà – ‘Tangle’ C30 €5
dk059_lucasigurtaLuca Sigurtà is an electronic composer since the early 2000s. Luca’s emotional electronic noise has become part of a mix together with slow paced rhythms and analogue synth delicate flows: a sort of very original trip-noise-hop ambient; melodies with a remarkable melancholic feel and beautiful digital/analog sounds shows all the potential of his music. “Tangle” is a sound istallation based on the use of tape players and loops of different lengths, random cut and pasted. Artwork by Merlo.

DK058 Vertonen – ‘Pont Respiration’ C30 €5
dk058_vertonenVertonen is the name under which Blake Edwards has been recording experimental audio since 1991. Drawing on a wide array of sound sources–sometimes processed, sometimes not–Vertonen’s sound output explores audio terrain ranging from crunchy and dense sonic chaos to off-kilter rhythms to deep evolving drones, making plenty of stops between. “Pont Respiration” source’s recordings were made beneath the fore River Bridge, Quincy MA (under renovation). Throught the sound processing of these field recordings, the tracks reveal themself like a raw documentation/metaphor of the slow decay of post-industrial era. Fragment Factory

ARV&MILJÖ/KRUBE. split C40
frag37animalpsiTwo of the rather on the spot names in the current European tape-mangler scene team up for their first and long overdue joint release. Berlin based Krube. returns home after his very first solo cassette “Vom Unerträglichen” (Fragment Factory, 2011) and takes his crude and crippled 21st century musique concrète to the next level. In his 20 minutes piece, K. manages to combine the raw and dirty nature of his earlier noise based concrete/tapemusic with a great sensitivity and open-mindedness to modern compositional techniques and tactics. Alongside of Sewer Election, Gothenburg’s Arv&Miljö has become the epitome of a unique sound and spirit in the South Swedish sub-underground, which evolved during the past 10 or so years. In “Okänd Strand” A&M extracts the very essence of Peter Jefferies’ “On an Unknown Beach”, leaving his distinctive thumbprint on a beautiful and deeply melancholic classic. High-grade C-40 chrome cassettes. Edition of 100 copies.
