Chris Daily – ’12 Minutes of Sleigh Bells and CHRISTMAS EP’
picWe don’t have many traditions at Teflon Beast, but one that we’re happy to continue is that of crafting new (skewed) Christmas music. This year producer/musician Chris Daily put together a collaborative new 5-song EP titled, 12 Minutes of Sleigh Bells and CHRISTMAS. The set features the songs of Chris Daily and the guitar/vocals of TB mainstays Geoff & Keegan and, for their first TB appearances, local Austin, TX musicians Thomas Porter & Quiet Company’s Bill Gyrta. DK050 Howard Stelzer – ‘Brayton Point’ CD 8€
DK050psiHoward Stelzer’s “Brayton Point” is a massive slab of slow throb built out of the sounds of the Brayton Point Generating Station in Somerset, Massachusetts.Brayton Point is the largest coal-fired power plant in New England. A town sprang up around it as the suburbs expanded, so now the complex sits across the street from a park and a baseball field where kids play. Local residents enjoy looming cooling towers (designed to be aesthetically pleasing, believe it or not) blocking the view of the sky above their back yards. Stelzer has always felt ambivalent toward power plants, both amazed and repulsed by their architecture. He explains his goal in constructing music out of the sounds of the site: “I aimed to get across what these structures are like in my imagination… monstrous, horrible, imposing, completely stoic and inhuman and yet also beautiful in a way that’s difficult to articulate.””Brayton Point” is Stelzer’s first solo album since 2008’s “Bond Inlets”Howard Stelzer has been making music out of cassette tapes and tape players since the mid-1990’s. He ran the Intransitive Recordings label from 1998 to 2012, and currently teaches middle school in Lowell, MA.

AFRIKAN SCIENCES – ‘Circuitous’ 2LP/CD
1At the nexus of Afrofuturism, science fiction, transcendental free jazz, and future hip hop, this new work from Eric Porter Douglas casts itself and its creator in a liminal zone most recognizably charted by astral traveler Sun Ra. ‘Circuitous’ follows from nearly a decade of releases for Deepblak —the Oakland-rooted imprint of frequent collaborator Aybee— and shares common blood with both the elevated consciousness of late ’80s club culture and contemporary West Coast beat scene. Built around Douglas’ signature polyrhythms and complex melodies, the unorthodox agility demonstrated throughout the album’s fourteen tracks reflect his long history of live, improvised sets combining multiple turntables, upright bass, and a command center of digital tablets and controllers. Each track maps the artist’s own movements, tracing paths of flight, highway trajectories through tunnels and over bridges, and rides through rough and gated neighborhoods. If familiar on the surface, deeper or repeated listenings to ‘Circuitous’ reveal the dynamic multiplicity embodied within. ‘Circuitous’ is a free and unbound body of work —one that defies easy classification yet translates fluidly across multiple environments— compiled over double LP in order to fully realize the scope of Afrikan Science’s sonic palette. The album is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, pressed on a double 140g vinyl & CD, featuring artwork by Louis Reith & Bill Kouligas. All vinyl purchases come with a free download card.

BLACK SITES (Helena Hauff & F#X) – ‘Unit 2669’ 12″
2Helena Hauff and F#X finally unleash their second record as Black Sites. Returning to PAN following 2013’s Prototype EP, the two hardware fetishists and resident DJs at Hamburg’s iconic Golden Pudel club turn out two cauterizing, long-form acid/techno cuts on Unit 2669 EP. A-side “Unit 2669″ is built around a narcotic, modulated 303 line and protean drones, while on the flip, “Москва” is an exercise in tape manipulation and visceral mechanics; with its circuitry corroded by parasites, the track’s lurching pulse of paranoid sirens is eviscerated by surges of tearing feedback. The 12″ is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M. It is pressed on 140g vinyl with artwork by Bill Kouligas.

Collin McKelvey – ‘The Nolan’ CDr
The latest album from Bay Area sound artist Collin McKelvey. The Nolan is a reference to the Neapolitan philosopher Giordano Bruno (1548 – 1600), an early proponent of free thought and critical inquiry. Celebrated for his cosmological theories which went beyond the then new and unpopular Copernican heliocentric model, proposing that the stars were distant suns with their own rotating planets, and moreover the possibility that these planets could foster life. He was exiled multiple times and eventually put to death by the Catholic Inquisition for his beliefs in Astronomy and the Art of Memory, being turned in by a Venetian aristocrat who had tricked him in coming back to Venice. The Nolan comprises of five pieces, documenting McKelvey’s output from 2013-2014. His work investigates the relationship between phonography and synthesized sound; utilyzing field recordings, granular synthesis, computer synthesis, and modular synthesis. Two of the pieces were originally composed to accompany film and video. Edition of 50.

Tim Coster – ‘Gemini’ C34
ttTim Coster is a Melbourne-based tone magician who hails from Auckland. He has created spheres of intricately detailed sound for labels including room40 and pseudoarcana, and has a number of releases on his own Fictitious Sighs and CLaudia imprints. Gemini marks a slight departure in Tim’s work, which is anchored by his signature drift. Using mixer feedback as the basis for Gemini and Gemini II and ring modulated field recordings for you and luck and heavy portamento for river sequence, Tim bridges the gap between the likes of Ian Middleton and Christoph Heemann. Repetition and movement bring shifts in pace and texture across the four quietly thoughtful pieces.

Error: Wrong + Naturalismo + Sin:Ned + Sherman – ‘Disgiunzione #6’ CDr 5€
Disgiunzione 620 copies, plastic sleeve. The sixth installment of the Disgiunzioni series documents an evening chit-chat between four Hong Kong-based non-conventional guitar players. A meeting of strings and pickups, pedals and objects, chases and intrusions, extended techniques and intended misfires, with no commitment to structure, nor attention to climax. Moody sketches and improvised soundtracks for empty rooms.

Venta Protesix/Naturalismo – ‘Nagasaki Coin-Op Virus’ CDr 5€
Nagasaki Coin-Op Virus9 copies. slim color poly-box, floppy-shaped mini CDr. In 2014, an unknown malware infected all the cabinets of a videogame arcade in Nagasaki, Japan. The virus was programmed to switch on the machines at night, overloading their audio processors through complex feedbacking exploits and generating an insane ensemble of overdriven 8-bit synthesizers piercing through the serenity of the neighborhood. Venta Protesix and Naturalismo present two remixes of the sounds recorded during the famous Nagasaki Coin-Op Virus incident, redefining the contours of future EDM through explorations of extreme bass-end throbs and logarithmic sequencing of glitched videogame audio.

Spring Break Tapes

Braeyden Jae — ‘Gutted’
Braeyden Jae creates the kind of drone suites that knocked you head over heels for the genre in the first place. With Gutted, the Salt Lake City-based producer extends his modest but potent canon into even bolder realms, hosting two side-long tracks of maxed-out melancholy for the masses. These are Braeyden Jae’s heaviest and most striking recordings to date.

Monte Burrows — ‘Fantasy Living’
Newcomer Monte Burrows launches what will surely be a harrowing run of postmodern post-classical din with an ear for creaky harmonies and a taste for elegiac brutality. Fantasy Living is the dust-strewn equivalent of an aural anthropologist’ drunken recollections of forgotten magic. A fading love letter to antiquated sound and technique. Both cassettes are limited edition releases. Only 100 copies of each will be available.
