Inner Ear

Kid Flicks – ‘Hearts of Gold’  LP+CD
Kid Flicks is one of the main one-man acts in Greece, pretty much like Bibio, Baths or Panda Bear and released his debut LP in one of the greatest greek indie labels “INNER EAR”. “Hearts Of Gold” was written between 2008-2010 through experimentation, rehearsals, testing, and changes and is entirely created by Kid Flicks: music, lyrics, musical instruments, singing, recording, mixing, artwork. But its audio and artwork are so colorful and so different from track to track that one would think that an entire team has been recruited for its production. There are several reasons for this… Kid Flicks recorded the album, using his MacBook, in the most unlikely places, e.g. in the car in a field outside Preveza, an evening on a beach, on a boat at sea, in a forest near his house in Lefkada. The mixes also: in friends’ houses, cafés, student dormitories in Munich. Kid Flicks’ stimuli and influences from travel, books, paintings, movies and music are endless. In parallel, his involvement with painting and Twombly’s influence in his notetaking have resulted in an original way of creative expression: the structures of his tracks and lyrics are usually found among notes, rough sketches and smudges, which in someone else’s eyes make no sense at all. “Hearts Of Gold” is an album that definitely should be heard as loud as possible, ideally with headphones and maybe on an island. Available from Inner Ear in limited edition vinyl including cd.

The Winter EP is out on France’s Upcode Records, a new label from Vincent Thierion of DAT Politics.  It features two new tracks, and two remixes by Vincent (aka MARKLION) and the great Max Tundra!

Dominique Leone – ‘Les Noces’
A revolutionary new recording of the classic Igor Stravinsky work, drawing from the world of eerie, pitch-shifted electro-pop a la The Knife and Bjork, the overdriven noise-splendor of Boredoms and Zach Hill, and sounds that could only have been made by Dominique. Enlisting pianists Regina Schaffer (Terry Riley) and Kanoko Nishi (Fred Frith), Dominique tackles Les noces’ four solo vocal parts and 30-member choir all on his own, adding big drums and stuff from the original score.

Not Not Fun

TG Gondard – ‘Avontuur’ CS $5
‘Wayward Belgium electronics’ would require several volumes of a radical music encyclopedia to even loosely engage the topic, and part of that reason is the endless river of new names that keeps cascading up from the cobblestoned sewers. Thibault Gondard floated on to our music map early this summer with a self-released LP of overdriven keyboard muscle, echo-warped skrewed-down drum machines, lulling air raid sirens, stained glass synth tonal pools, and alien soul vocal manipulations, and Avontuur is his freshest (and best) batch of tracks, which also functions as a debut of sorts. The opening cut, “Avontuur,” is as hybridized and electrifying as any he’s crafted thus far, slicing through the speakers with a stuttering codeine cassette-ready beat peppered with reverb handclaps and minimal keyboard riffs jacked through junk shop speaker cabinets. He’s just embarked on a two week European tour with ‘glue-wave’ post-punkers The Dreams so go huff his fumes live if he crosses yr flight path. Pro-dubbed and imprinted tapes in cases with J-cards designed by MB Brown. Edition of 150.

Galaxy Toobin’ CS $6
Rarely has a collab moniker felt as apt as this one. The one-off collab duo of Elliot Lip and William Burnett aka Speculator (no, not the hypnagogist dude) strikes a uniquely sublime synthesis of adrift-in-infinity astral synthesizer meditation and Legowelt-ish deep Chicago/Trax lab experiments. Cuts like “Toobin’ Problems” and “Friday Afternoon Toobin’” advance this latter agenda, soaring lazily through the stars on relaxed 303 bass bubbles and vintage drum machine skeletons, whereas others (esp. the B side) like “Snake River” and “Entering Snake Pass” summon more of a soundtrack/atmosphere vibe, cool cold dread and chrome tension coiling together like a reptile cyborg discovered in an alien space station (??). Originally released as a limited LP on Crème Organization in 2008, this has been a heavy-rotation NNF favorite ever since we heard it, and felt inspired to coax some new heads on board the Toobin’ trip by initiating this cassette edition. Pro-dubbed and imprinted tapes in full-color J-cards with a slightly revised layout of the original artwork. Edition of 150.

Terence Hannum – ‘The Unholy Bow’ book
Slowly the crowd gathers, heads hung as the musicians pick up their instruments. Upon the first note of feedback the heads start moving. Both performer and witness begin a ritualized dance in a flurry of hair, a profane genuflection. An unholy bow. THE UNHOLY BOW is the final publication in artist TERENCE HANNUM’s (one third of Locrian) bi-monthly publication series for 2011 following his issues PURIFICATION, DARK MATTER/DUNKLE MATERIE (w/ Alexander Binder), DEATH POSTURE (w/ Scott Treleaven), ABLATION and NEGATIVE LITANIES. This issue focuses on the group ritual of the headbang ubiquitous in heavy metal culture, by cropping drawings and digital photo collages into a printed cadence and features a brief musing cadence from the artist. Printed in an Edition of 150. 4.25″ × 6.88″. Perfect Bound Pocket Sized Book. White interior paper (60# weight), black and white interior ink, white exterior paper (100# weight), full-color exterior ink. 50 pages.

Truco Espárrago

TR-010: Fasenuova – ‘Ella Está Llena de Gracia’ CDr 5€
We began breaking amps and revving up drum machines at full speed, making them go through all kind of distortions and effects. Microphones went on scratching, in a deafening scream of feedback, and we resisted the temptation, that is almost physical and completely instinctive, of turning down the volume immediately, leaving them to modulate alone, creating a landscape as solid as the real one (…) That shrilling feedback sound, the one that everyone avoids when a sound test is done, was and still is, our starting point”. With these words Ernesto Avelino described the origin of its creative association with Roberto Lobo in the Fasenuova band. “Ella está llena de Gracia” is the first album that the duet Fasenuova releases with Truco Espárrago, and the first part of a trilogy that is going to deal firstly with noise, then with music and finally with rhythm. This first release is a mysterious and indefinite album, like all origins: the Universe, the Moon, Magic, Woman. Just like these mysteries, Noise has been shown elusive to theoretical approaches, and susceptible of being understood through magic. Amps pushed to the limit, saturated squeaks and spectral howls, lost in echoes. This is, for Fasenuova, the enigmatic origin of their art, the chaos from where Order emerges. Where does music come from? Is noise its opposite, or its origin? Are perhaps noise and music the same thing? Because if it is true that music inhabited an upper universal level of harmony raised from the chaos of noise, it would be reasonable to think that music have inherited, by transfusion, the powers and principles of life of the noise. Just like it happens with the universe, the perceptible appearance of music hides the true nature of the powers that control it. However, this album shows that noise, while engendering music, never lost its superior principles. This is an album about the powers of the noise, about dreams, visions, symbols, allegories and confusing prophecies, about fears and terrors, a brilliant search of the intimate realities of the existence and the music, dealing with the eternal cycle of creation and destruction. “Ella está llena de Gracia” compiles material from several Fasenuova sessions in October 2009 at Casa Conservatorio de la Música de Mieres (Asturias), plus an unreleased version of the track “Ella está llena de Gracia” recorded during the sessions of the “A la quinta hoguera” LP, produced by Enrique Guisasola-Kahn. “Ella está llena de Gracia” comes in a professional CDr with 9 tracks and 45 minutes of music, presented in a cardboard, in a limited edition of 50 copies.
