Larry Wish – ‘How More Can You Need?’ $7
The robot that makes the music for the claymation children’s public access shows since the 1970’s is pondering its future and slowly going mad. These days bring infrequent uses for a once wondrous machine: the robust glowing tubes that fueled its warm orange halo are dulled and less insistent. Perhaps inefficiency and glazing is precipitating this lack of clarity of self-purpose and intent. Over the years, our glorious robot has inched closer and closer to the tiny storeroom window and for the past five years has watched the small garden below the tv studio, a flower plot tended to by the maintenance man and his tiny, jolly wife. Now, with no purpose left in this cold, digital future, he still does according to his function, and through the floating dust motes, scores the scene outside. A day will go by and it will have only a stanza done, a line of code/music that keeps slipping, in pitch and in tempo. It fears the future, but it also fears futility, obsolescence, and being alone at the end of its days. In the past all these things have been anathema to the robot but in these last final years, as one force becomes cloudy, the other becomes clarity. It will go on, and there will be another spring. The suite must be done. And the bees still buzz.

Lips and Ribs – ‘Battle in Nagoya’ $7
The pounding of war drums never felt so warm, glamorous, and oddly enough, orange. By the time we reached Level Four to face the big boss, the team had stripped their DayGlo Body Glove war suits in favor of leather boxers and multi-scale camouflage torso paint, and blended in perfectly between the decay of the large appliance salvage yard and the borderlands of the forest. As the first salvo rained down upon us from on high, Team Leader Count Lips discharged a paint cannon, occluding a great deal of the large robots single eye, allowing us to quickly slip between its legs unchallenged and attack from the rear with our grenades and electro-pulse charges. With the last obstacle behind us, we finally lay sight upon our ancestral homeland, unseen by most of our team, green and verdant, stretching to the horizon behind the big boss like a undulating turquoise sea. Wordlessly charging in unison towards our destiny and perhaps glorious death, we feel the future on our faces like warm rain and the tides of history behind us, filling our footsteps with dark stars.

Oxykitten – ‘Gleeking the Cube’ $7
As Martina goes out to fetch the post, a small glowing orb glides in behind her, slowly picking up speed as it starts to circumnavigate the room. Still occupied with the stack of circulars, she does not notice as this curious floating pinball picks up speed, softly caroming off walls in a mostly silent tattoo, like a turbocharged housefly with some intelligent and deadly purpose. Round and round, in increased figure eight patterns from top to bottom, it weaves itself an increasingly tangled & tight pattern until, almost too quick to see, it finally finds (sees) the small door to the second landing and fires at rifle speed up the stairs, suddenly expanding exponentially into a flat disk that from the time it hits the top of the landing and rockets upward, has become the width of a small sitting room. The disk (room), aided by its velocity and strength, hits the ceiling with such force it explodes the roof clean off its moorings and into the sky. Flabbergasted neighbors later said that the roof flew straight up completely intact, unvarying in its ascent and speed until disappearing into the bright noon sun somewhere above Manchester.

CRISTIANO CAROSI – ‘Botanica’ C30 5€
“Botanica” is the first work published by Cristiano Carosi whih his real name. Moving to this new vest there’s the idea of “uncovering” unseen relashionships between sound objects, the research of new intersections and combinations through electronic instruments and synthesis filtered by effects and magnetic tapes like a diaphram for a fotographer impressing his film. “With my filters I dose the materials i play, find and record, different elements and couples of sounds, reproduced and observed while they re-grow together; I let them take their own space and time measuring this flow to keep and alterate the balance at the same time, leaving empty spaces and silence to a new dialogue”. He has recorded music with the shoegaze band Sea Dweller and is part of CYMBLS, a psychedelic band that experiments with sound and electronic with a minimal approach. With his solo project HERBAL RESEARCH he elaborates short studies of sound collage from samples, electronic synthesis and acoustic instruments on the tapes “Sound Non Sound” for Upside Down Recordings, his own label focused on experimental new sounds (Nastro, Filtro, Julien A.Lacroix, Angélica Castelló).

Golden Teacher – ‘G.D.D.B. (Green Door Disco Band)’ LP+CS
Golden Teacher was born in early 2013, when members Ollie, Laurie, Rich, Sam, Cassie, and Charlie gathered at Glasgow’s legendary Green Door Studios and packed seven cassettes with raw, rhythmic improvisations. These instrumental sessions, dubbed Green Door Disco Band (or G.D.D.B.), were a covert prologue for the band’s infectious and hallucinatory dance music. Originally issued via cassette on Golden Teacher’s own Akashic Records, this vinyl edition compiles G.D.D.B.’s most commanding moments for an explosive re-introduction to the band’s emergent boogie. Golden Teacher’s method was simple: Pack the studio with instruments, position a tape recorder on the floor, and rip. Whenever the vibe was right someone would hit record. The members swapped instruments at random, mutating across primal electro-disco and swirling, psychedelic house. Jerry-rigged rhythms breach the delectable fry of tape hiss. Melodies dissolve into throbbing ambience as percussion lurches in and out of focus. The band achieves a contagious blend of hazy atmospherics and crystalline frequencies that inundates each groove with club-level delirium. G.D.D.B. captures Golden Teacher’s kinetic genesis, transposing the dynamics of their freest and most elastic live performances onto plastic. As an exclusive bonus, the album is offered with or without a companion cassette, compiled by the band from two live performances in February, 2013. Side A is Golden Teacher in classic dance floor motion; Side B documents a baffling reinterpretation of Ludwig van Beethoven via abstract electronics. The tape is only available from House Rules. A trio, a gang, a hazard – Lila Matsumoto, Matthew Hamblin & Greg Thomas (formally of Helhesten). Sun-drenched fuzz guitar & roaming drones swirl unsettlingly across side A while screeching violinesques tumble out of the shadows down into the ravine. A touch of mumbled wordery fights off the tremors & we’re back on solid ground as the tape runs out….PHEW. B sees yet more cosmic chaos drones folding, escaping, attacking, decaying. It’s crumpled psych for the BitCoin Milliners. Railway rhythms & the soft snow of deep white noise lull you gently off while a thick membrane of sonic throb slowly siphons your sense of self off through your fire-damaged ears. Music for plant growers – botanical bozos.

Improvised live work from The Crystal King. Recored 100% live at the IMIR art space, Stavanger in Norway. It’s thunderous clomping & clattering with minor vocal cacophony across “Le 1er Slab”, as the French say. Trapped underneath the escalator, watching the world above through the cracks in the metal steps – you’re part of the problem Alan. Side B offers no respite from the confusion. The snake charmer they call him, cause o’ all that beautiful hiss. Storm clouds gather on the horizon while your garden falls apart – good bye chair, good bye plant pot, good bye. I hear if you’re a real bad person, you get reincarnated as a tape that lives in SB’s mangle bag – torn limb from limb by sound artist night after night after night…

Anne-F Jacques & Takuji Naka – ‘Fuyu’ £4(World)
Anne-F Jacques is a sound artist (Canadienne), Takuji Naka is from Japan Island. Fuyu is a 28 minute study into the quiet clockwork of repetition, distance & solitude. Grandad fixing the Dyson then jammin’ cross-wise on the reel-to-reel – grand pere est fixe l’hoover. You’d normally expect this classy affair to appear on the Hideous Replica label, but not in this case. Fuyu is a rare & beautiful thing indeed & one for meditative afternoons or late night lullabillicus. Limited to 58 copies with minimalist on-tape printing & recycled paper insert + non-recycled main insert.

JEAN-LUC GUIONNET & THOMAS TILLY – ‘Stones, Air, Axioms / Delme’ 2LP
»Stones, Air, Axioms« is an ongoing art and research project by French sound artists Jean-Luc Guionnet and Thomas Tilly, dealing with the complex relationships between sound and architecture. Delme is the third phase within this venture. By virtue of its history and exceptional acoustics, Delme’s former synagogue is the ideal setting for a customised, on-site sound installation. Guionnet and Tilly are deliberately leaving the place empty, giving visitors an experience of both visual and sound architecture. By supplementing the built space with frequencies, as well as voices, instrumental notes, rhythms and silence, the artists offer everyone a special listening situation: whether this listening is drifting or attentive, static or mobile, it is guaranteed to give visitors a different perception of the place, which is remoulded by the volume of air it contains and by the sound travelling through it. Periodically, Vancouver Island librarian Partli Cloudi emerges from the periodicals stacks and offers up another cut-up, broke-down, sideways look at the world through the textual magic of sound. Pet Smells finds PC stretching his muscles a little, in his words: “I was purposely trying to tap into more of a Three Feet High and Rising meets Smiley Smile type of record, and questioning if humour and joy can have a place in music versus more ‘acceptable’ emotions like angst, sadness, and ironically… melancholy. I guess when I said ‘music’, I meant like boring indie / underground / experimental music… putting the mental back in experimental. Gad Whip – ‘Trapped In A Pin Hole Camera’ C38
All day every day, making tomorrow seem like yesterday. The musical ennoblement of the Big Time Television pirate music video channel in Max Headroom, GAD WHIP come on like a nightmare wedding of Mad Max and Bladerunner with their anarchistic trash heap of tripped-out industrial post-punk. Trapped In A Pin Hole Camera features the core trio of Amos, Bolam and Davies aided and abetted by Neil Campbell (Vibracathedral Orchestra, Astral Social Club etc), Paul Walsh (Smell & Quim, Foldhead etc), Jimbo Baxter (Freaks Union, The Fuckin’ Glorious etc), Eva Davies & Ryan Walker (both on extra guitar & bass duties). Recorded in several kitchens throughout the summer of 2017 in West Yorkshire, UK, with “one mic and a busking amp” the band claims, though the recording is by no means the lo-fi shambles that implies. Eiyn Sof – ‘Meadow Thrum’ C32
It’s a murmuring attempt at animating an imagined landscape, and all manner of anthropomorphic entity within. I’ve been thinking of this album as druidic lore-play; it’s some pretty decadent fantasy. Hyper visual and hyper surrealistic, as far as lyrics are concerned. Threading in a lot of ’irreverent’ and intentionally loose percussive and organic sounds among more careful and familiar melodic stuff, which is gently reflective, I think, of the overarching concept and heart of the thing: play between two worlds. Above/below. Sound: a whole lotta sprawling polyphonic vocal stuff, including a small men’s chorus, droning, and percussion using throat, tongue and breath. Lots of table-tapping, hairbrush-bristles-on-paper, jewellery jangling, and some cutting and pasting of found battle sounds (swords clinking, drop-kicks, etc.) And of course, analog synth (Juno 60) and piano, acoustic string instruments (toy guitars, autoharp), electric bass, and bird song- mostly cardinals, robins and grackles. High bias transparent gold cassette. Housed in printed envelope with insert card.
