NNA065: Migrations In Rust – ‘Two Shadows’ LP
9c8e5db3ace3ebef5fac2776d6c1311a01f75dd8Migrations In Rust is Jesse Allen. As a member of the Red Light District collective in Queens, NY (which has included some of the best in modern experimental musicians such as Yellow Tears, Pharmakon, John Mannion, Diaphragm, DJ Dog Dick and a slurry of other side projects, solo projects and collaborations), former member of the Cathode Terror Secretion and current performer in Cowards, in addition to producing and performing under the guise of several other solo projects (Hollow Seed, Goldeater, etc), Jesse has been actively pursuing many diverse avenues for his musical expression. Migrations In Rust, whose original sonic intentions could have at one time been more easily categorized as “ambient” music, has slowly shifted towards the unrecognizable. Migrations In Rust has ascertained as Jesse’s longest running solo endeavor and holds as his most personal, having transformed from merely a study of emotion and a practice of understanding emotions into something altogether more grand and wholly personal. Three years in the making, during which Jesse relocated from New York City to the valley of Western Massachusetts, “Two Shadows” communicates the yolk of this transformation. The elements of interplay between turmoil and tranquility, and the means of composing “organically” to achieve these results, have been filtered through new approaches in an attempt to reach closer to a finer understanding of grace, and towards more precisely using music and sound as a vessel of psychic emotional transmission. Throughout the record, orchestral landscapes blend with rustling concrete textures, settling in a purgatory between melancholy bleakness and slow-burning serenity. Each second is densely packed with incredible detail and carefully-layered instrumentation, crafted with an expansive palette of acoustic, electronic, and naturally-occurring sound sources. Amorphous melodic passages travel with well-paced fluidity from one idea to the next, producing a dream-like narrative. At times placid and evocative, “Two Shadows” also has a tendency to teeter on the edge of powerful ferocity, sometimes brewing with crackling fury while tastefully maintaining the restraint not to explode into outright violence. This shifting temper is constructed with elements of noise, ambient, hip hop, musique concréte, and sci-fi R&B, all finding their place in the innovative tapestry that unfolds across “Two Shadows”. This album showcases the results of discipline, love, and persistence in one’s craft and NNA is honored to finally share this work with the world. Mastered and cut by Lupo at Calyx Mastering in Berlin, Germany.

NNA066: Hubble – ‘Hubble Eagle’ LP
70a45a5a7d09276926e8c33de4b9803bdd3299f5NNA is thrilled to bring you “Hubble Eagle”, the latest full-length from Ben Greenberg’s Hubble project. Having cut his teeth in numerous bands such as Pygmy Shrews, Zs, and most recently with The Men, Greenberg has been fostering and cultivating his own unique reexamination of the the guitar as an instrument, resulting in a minimalist and truly psychedelic whirlwind of notes,  first displayed on his debut release “Hubble Linger” on NNA in 2011. Since then, the Hubble sound has matured and expanded, taking in new ideas and influences while still retaining the rock and roll hypnotism of it’s “one man and his guitar” rawness. On “Hubble Eagle” we hear Greenberg launching his guitar mantra even further into uncharted territory. Opening with the side-long “A Star Or Two Beside”, Hubble trades in his trusted electric and opts for acoustic guitar, which when subjected to Greenberg’s turbulent tapping chops, yields incredible and unexpected sonic results. Complex percussive patterns begin to emerge, creating a raw rhythmic backbone for a constantly shifting vortex of overtones and harmonic weavings. These dulcimer-like pluckings ping-pong back and forth across a vast stereo field, creating a whirlwind effect that sweeps over the listener like river rapids; bubbling, rushing, chaotic, and endlessly flowing. After some immersion, the barrage of notes can start to feel automated or even electronic, until brief pauses and subtle flourishes break the hypnotic spell, reminding the listener of the human nature of this music. Side B opens with the breaking of more new ground on the track “A Long Way From Home” originally by The Kinks, Hubble’s first cover song. Inspired by Greenberg’s rigorous touring schedule on the open road, Hubble meditates on the feelings of isolation and melancholy set forth in the original song. By deconstructing the riffs and rebuilding them in the Hubble framework, the track turns into an electro-acoustic hybrid that is entirely new in sound, employing alternate tunings and adding vocals for the first time in the project’s history. The result opens new harmonic gateways for the notes to flow through a psych-rock atmosphere. Closing off with the title track “Hubble Eagle”, Hubble is in it’s truest form with a powerful electric guitar exercise. The playing is mechanical in its relentless repetition, creating guitar fractals that seem to crystallize around themselves like the formation of a galaxy. Rock riffs are contemplated, exposed, and ripped to shreds by Greenberg’s signature three-finger tapping technique, drawing upon raw bluesy or even gritty Americana-like tonality. The sound becomes so full-spectrum that it creates audio hallucinations, causing one to hear perhaps organ, voice, or synth… before breaking back into the reality that it is has been the sound of solo guitar all along. Greenberg successfully reminds us of the importance of hand-played music and the human touch in a time when electronics and circuitry along seem to prevail. Enhanced by the record’s flow from acoustic into electric sound, the result of “Hubble Eagle” is a truly unique modern guitar album. Mastered and cut by Lupo at Calyx Mastering in Berlin, Germany.

SS052 DAYS IN RETURN 7”+C30 12€
dir_2Days in return is a collaboration between Loke Rabeh and Johan Wieth, both key figures of the experimental scene in Copenhagen, running labels and projects such as: Posh Isolation, Ice Age, Damien Dubrovnik, Megan, lr .. This output is the result of a long and focused acoustic session recorded in the abandoned church of “Frihavns Kirken” using only objects found on site. Pipe organ, baptismal bowls and the wonderful acoustic of the place are used to create a dissonant suite for deep tones and smashed objects. Edition of 100.

SS055 JEPH JERMAN – ‘a fidgety and excitable engine’ C40 5€
jj_2For more than 25 years Jeph Jerman, previously with the moniker Hands To, has heavily explored the realm of field recordings and the devices to record it. Over the years his sound has become gradually more gaunt and essential, leaving more and more the electronic aspect apart and instead increasing the acoustic size. This made the sound of his compositions, if possible, even more organic, succeding to play entirely acoustic sets using only small objects found in nature such as stones, seeds, pine cones. In this release he present two non-stop moving tracks composed using only detritus and cheap second-hand devices founds in the Arizona Desert. Edition of 100.

SS056 ADAM ASNAN – ‘tetraptych’ 1-sided LP 12€
aa_2Adam Asnan is a London based composer-performer of musique concrète, acquiring an MA under the supervision of Denis Smalley in 2009. Adam’s work promotes the aesthetic potential of fixed (recorded), amplified sound, and the instabilities of a medium; the auditory ‘image’ subject to intervention, or the exposition of its artifice. Tetraptych is his first vinyl release and consist of four short pieces of circular and pulsating sounds, vibrating objects in equilibrium over a wise work of field recordings and mechanical sounds. Edition of 200.

SS057 CARLOS CASAS – ‘patagonian field recordings’ 1-sided LP 12€
cc_2Carlos Casas is a filmmaker and visual artist from Barcelona. His work is a cross between documentary film, cinema, and contemporary visual and sound arts. In 2001 he started a trilogy of works dedicated to the most extreme environments on the planet, Patagonia, Aral sea, and Siberia, with a particular interest on how humans relate with the territory they occupy. These tracks comes from a selection of his vast archive, ranging from radio frequencies collages to interviews, animals at hunt and local musicians jams. All recorded in various locations of Tierra Del Fuego, Patagonia. Edition of 150.

SS058 RM – ‘current logic’ 2xC20 8€
r_2First release for the new solo project of Riccardo Mazza (Lettera 22) working with a singular mix of claustrophobic tones and spectral samples. Started as a simple study about rythm, the project has gradually integrated the use of field recordings and reverberating drone sounds which add to the compositions a deep, gristle and dramatic feel. Edition of 100.

Hafner – ‘Gentleman’s Hang Club’ C30
Hafner is Jake Finn – a one man post punk dirge noise band that all at once throws us back to drinking twofisted pitchers (!!!!) of beer while checking out the most obnoxious post hardcore hate that AmRep and Touch and Go could send north. Oh the 90s. RIYL – Cheater Slicks, Flipper, Vertigo, Drunks With Guns. Ed. of 40 w DL.

Crabskull – ‘Keep the Evil Away’ C90
Ever since we released the Jovian Black Opera tape a few years ago – we’ve been huge fans of all theings Crabskull. Last Spring I was riding with Chrys & talking about future Crabskull projects and we got on the topic of Fletcher Pratt’s Dub Series. Chrys mentioned that he had been playing around with a mix of Dub 45 at 33rpm. 90 minutes of slwwwww dub jams. Best as the nights get longer and the dark keeps you off the streets and behind closed doors. Ed. of 40 w DL

Crabskull – ‘Phelgm Bomb Trick$’ C90
2nd a trio of Crabskull c90s – Phelgm Bomb Trick$ is the logical follow up to Chrys’ self released Phlegm Rock Vol. 1 cs. While he essentially sold this to us as a collection of “trap beats” – it’s so so so much more than that. This collection of instrumentals will be held up as a prime example of a producer that is just coming into his own. Duplicated in real time from analog source. There is also a digital version of the album that has some cross over – but for the most part is a completely different record. Ed. of 40 w/ DL

Snailpoison – ‘Live in the Hatnhiman Caves’ C90
3rd of trio of Crabskull releated c90s, Live in the Hatnhimen Caves – is full on techno. The shortest track is in the 9 minute range – so that’s plenty of space to chill out and melt into these full of creeped out Crab vibes. Duplicated in real time from analog source. There is also a bandcamp version of the album that encompasses 2/3rds of the cassette. Ed. of 40 w/ DL

Dementia and Hope Trails/Boar/Bob Bellerue – ‘The Three Pound Enigma’ C90 $7
Dementia and Hope Trails_Boar_Bob BellerueA three headed beast of beautiful soaring guitar drone, harsh and pummeling noise, and an abstract quietly complicated drone piece. The three artists come together on a beautiful journey through some new imagining of the three pound enigma. Dementia and Hope Trails is probably my favorite drone project out there, with the most amazing soundscapes and melodies, and this tape is no different by any means. Boar lays down some pummeling, absolutely crushing relentless noise that doesn’t let up once. Finally Bob Bellerue ties up the piece with a stark contrast to Boar with a quiet, nuanced, and abstract piece of small movements and breaks into thumping and loud peaks of sound. Limited to 49 copies on black and white tapes. Double sided full color J-Cards featuring original artwork by Cree Butcher, lay out by Wade Clanton.

FASX – ‘That’s Not My Name Anymore’ C35 $6
FASXBuzzing parts of a whole not yet a material presence. Field recordings found at a thrift shop microcassette stumble out from who knows when onto cassette tape. Pulsating rhythms lead into darkness where the future and unknowing awaits in its various forms. Don’t go there. Stay back and watch. Let the form take its course. This is a special edition tape celebrating a year of releases from Null Religion. Limited to 10 black cassette tapes with smiley face stickers and double sided art on heavy cardstock. Art by Cree Butcher and Wade Clanton.

Retrograde Tapes

rgt #13: Crodar – ‘Movie’ C23 $5
crodartape100E-Mu synths, samples, and other filtered sounds compose Corey Mahaney’s latest solo work: six scenes of an imagined film, each written with a deft sense of musicality & an uncommon organic quality that belies its sources. From powerful Eastern-tinged drone to more subdued synth glow, each track represents a shifting audio backdrop of varying vibes, often displaying a reflective quality while always retaining a feeling of raw sincerity & thoughtful contemplation. Type II, high bias chrome tapes. Edition of 50 with mini-poster included from the artist.

rgt #11: Kevolych – ‘Abstract Frame’ C26 $5
kevolychtape100Working with a stockpile of homemade synths & noise generators, Joseph Connelly jams out layers of circuits on circuits in exploration of texture, contrasts in intensity, and contemplative ohm-drone sans any sort of forced spiritual connotation. Starting in a godless synth temple, the atmosphere initially seems devoid of life until other writhing layers find their way in. Things take a turn for the worse & a wall of harsh noise buries the place with the listener inside it. Negative Nostalgia unfolds in similar fashion but in place of harsh noise the open air swells into the morass of a stirring insect jungle, dense with a squall of evolving noise & burnt-circuit clamor. Type II, high bias chrome tapes. Edition of 50.

rgt #10: Zonal Taste Wand/ZX-9 – ‘Negative Space/Partition Function Part 2’ C47 $5
ztwzx9tape100Two of Australia’s finest synth manglers, Ben Lynch and Luke Morris comprise a dual-Aussie split on Negative Space/Partition Function Part 2. Zonal Taste Wand starts us off with a lumbering, beat-driven electronic sandstorm that dissolves into a tense relative stasis just long enough to make the eventual paranoia of a bad trip hit even harder. Meditation follows. On the flip, ZX-9 creates minimal & mechanical test tube drippings spoon-fed to you by automatons in six short experiments, the results transmitted from a robotic lab deep underground directly into your lab rat brain. Type II, high bias chrome tapes. Edition of 50.

RAYMOND DIJKSTRA & MATTHIAS BOSS – ‘Ins Kahle Zimmer Sinken Blaue Firne’ 7″
Those familiar with Amsterdam-based artist Raymond Dijkstra know how charming and mysterious his works are: mostly released on his own Le Souffleur imprint, they come in very limited runs, beautiful packaging with a very distinct style, like they’re from an ancient, albeit unknown century. That same elegant-timeless feel is of course reflected in his music, an extremely personal work usually around the accordion, but also unknown electronics (tapes, echoes?), voice; the feeling is always that of some kind of privilege, to enter the artist’s private room, filled with the smell of opium, crusty wallpaper and taxidermy. Here, Dijkstra is together with violin extraordinaire Matthias Boss from Switzerland, a truly outstanding player mostly known in the European improv scene, who also collaborates with drummer master Marcello Magliocchi. “Ins Kahle Zimmer Sinken Blaue Firne” is a fantastic “chamber” recording from these two masters of the screeching acoustic metal-on-metal. The title evokes the image of an exposed room with compact snow flakes falling in. Violin, organ, fork & spoon are the credited instruments here, blowing ice cold gusts into your room, or face hopefully. Imagine some sort of twisted classical music from a distant century, a gift of pure improv given to us by Dijkstra’s inimitable accordion style and Boss’ dramatic violin, this music has no time, only beauty. 33rpm 7″, comes in a silkscreened reverse cardboard cover. Edition of 100.

PICK-UP – ‘Departure’ CS
Pick-Up is the Dutch duo of Frans de Waard (electronics) and Martin Luiten (resonator guitar). Both are longtime figures in the European experimental music scene since the mid 80’s. Frans de Waard played & toured extensively with numerous groups such as Kapotte Muziek, Beequeen, Goem, Zebra/Wieman, The Tobacconists and Ezdanitoff working a wide range of musical interest, besides working at Staalplaat (1992-2003) and started his own Vital publication in 1986 (now Vital Weekly); Martin started the bands Girlfriends and Uw Hypotheekadvies and now plays with The Julie Mittens. Martin and Frans started their duo Pick-up in 2008 and worked together intensely for about two years. During this period they recorded numerous live sessions of a volatile set up in which Martin plays his resonator guitar and effects, which Frans pick-up on the spot and fed through real-time computer effects. The resulting live recordings were captured on multiple tracks and mixed together for release. Pick-up has released a 3″CDR on My Own Little Label, a LP for Plinkity Plonk and a LP for Important Records. ‘Departure’ is a farewell to that period, departing a particular phase in their history and are the final recordings from that period. Now Pick-up is on hold while trying to think of what would be the next move, as once you investigated a particular method of working, it’s time to move on, as both of them feel. “Departure” is a fine atmospheric work of contemporary experimental music, minimal electronics, sci-fi, hypnotic drones, Fennesz-like lush textures, hypnotic ring mod madness… despite the electronic nature of the music, it never loses its human side, leaving room for blues accents, in fact it seems like the guitar is left raw at times, while the laptop elaborates minimal layers around it and vice versa. Pro-dubbed imprinted clear tapes, with 3-panel full color printed covers, edition of 90.

Ninni Morgia/Silvia Kastel/Ultrillo Kushner – ‘Live At Hemlock, San Francisco’ CS
Live document from the one-off collaboration with ex Comets on Fire drummer Utrillo Kushner. This was the opening show of Control Unit’s US West Coast tour in March-April 2012. Heavy, intense, trippy, most of all, loud. Recorded by Seymour Glass. Numbered edition of 60, orange pro-dubbed tapes which come in a silkscreened plastic box. Includes an insert.
