TR-001 Bloody Ridge Rum Runners – ‘High Plains Drifter/Live from the Lion’s Den’ C47 $5
A rural paradise of hermits, televangelists, and gator-filled swimming pools as surveyed through prescription-strength beer goggles. Granddad may have cranked some Kershaw on the drive out to the V.F.W. hall, but this is what he was humming to whoever would listen as he limped back home.  Concise solo numbers on the A-side, looser full-band renditions on the B-side.  “Come tornadoes or zombies, the world might end, but at least I’ll know I died where I belong.” Indeed.  Edition of 50.

TR-002 Bevo Francis – ‘Sun City Welcoming’ C31 $5
Sometimes all it takes is a bit of willpower and a decrepit Yamaha keyboard.  The midnight murk of these pop yarns is home to a slew of gracelessly aging characters held stagnant by the dust-ridden romanticism of glory days, and they just might get a fish story or two in before they’re swallowed up by a wash of synthesized strings.  The road to Sun City is a long one, dear friends, but the traveling doesn’t have to be so lonely.  Edition of 50 with cutout covers.

TR-003 Night 1980 – ‘Silver Lining Manufacturing’ C46 $5
Before its untimely demise, Night 1980 was described as having “too many jangly, shaky things” by a young man waiting to watch the metal band scheduled to play after them at the local New Year’s Eve show. At a later gig, the various tambourines that they dispersed throughout the audience before their set were credited with lifting the spirits of a crowd still shaken by the lead singer of the previous band’s threat to “hit someone in the fucking face with this mic stand if you all don’t start moving.”  Now, with the remixed reissue of their only album, originally released on Halloween, 2009, the potential to grow mildly annoyed, receive a spiritual lift, or remain unmoved either way is all yours.  A (mostly) jubilant noise to bust a piñata or smear paint on the face of a loved one to.  Edition of 50 with hand-collaged covers.

TR-004 Welfare Queen – ‘Chinese Medicine’ C34 $5
Listening to the opener’s clean meld of delay and harmonics, picturing a time when Dustin Knight could frequently be found covering GG Allin’s “Bite It You Scum” in nothing but his socks can be somewhat difficult, but by the track’s distortion-caked conclusion, it makes sense.  With songs ranging anywhere from a few years to a few hours in age, there’s a glimpse of nearly every outfit donned by the queen throughout the course of her ramshackle reign, from mumbled pop to fretboard catharsis, with more than a few telling glances toward the future.  Edition of 50.

Truco Espárrago

Picadillo Genital 3€
Picadillo Genital (Asturias, Spain) was formed on 2001 and disbanded on 2003 after two demos of infamous and retarded noisecore. In summer 2011 Picadillo Genital reunited, giving various concerts with bands like Tempesta, Hongo or Infección, and releasing  a promo: “Pro-Mortem”. In December 23, Picadillo Genital presented their second demo “Feliz Navidad Cerotes de Mierda” at their hometown.  “Feliz Navidad Cerotes de Mierda” includes 12 tracks, a cavernous blend of corrupted crustcore (“Matanza Humana” or “El Nicho”), primitive grindcore (“Un grito en el faro” o “Ojalá te pudras en el infierno”) and absurd and annoying noisecore (“Descojone compulsivo a base de tripazos” or “Desentrañado con una cuchara de postre”). This is an ugly, dirty, raw and infamous recording with loads of black humor and underground devotion, like it was done in the early nineties.  “Feliz Navidad Cerotes de Mierda” has been manufactured and released by It Lives In The Woods Records, and coproduced and distributed by Truco Espárrago. It is presented in a CDr with 12 tracks (10 minutes of non-music) in a handmade cardboard.  You can get this demo for 3 euro plus handling and shipping through Truco Espárrago.

Wood Spider

Wood Spider cassette $6
Wood Spider is a self proclaimed Lo-fi New England Gothic Freak Folk Punk band. The album In The Thick of It is the newest and longest release. It begins with a folk punk-esque high energy song that leads into a dark manic song about growing up. Swimming Holes offers a break from the intensity with a dancy heavily textured song filled with ambiance and hopeful dynamics. Both Lonesome Shore and Shifting Gears take the album to a higher level of intensity with intricate lyrics dealing with personal feelings and political angst. The fast paced and heavy atmosphere created is then broken with Pen Pals a ragtime-esque fun song about sending letters! All in all this has been a long time of songwriting and practicing, with members from all over the United States the album grows in a wild direction drawing influence from a plethora of sources.  The release keeps up with the Wood Spider tradition of cassette releases with a creative hand crafted album, each release is unique and all hand put together by the band. Painted boxes with front and back photo prints. Stuffed with accordion fold insert and blue cassette. Every album bought comes with a surprise handful of goodies provided by the Spikedriver Arts Collective.

ASR082 Shadows – ‘A Death in the Family’ C40 $6(US)$7(Can + Mex)/$8(World)
Edition of 100, 2011. The third installment in Shadows’ Dark Knight themed cassette series is a robust collection of noise electronics, rumbling loops and vocal oddities recorded over the course of 2011. “A Death in the Family” showcases Wyatt Howland (Skin Graft) and David Russell’s (Collapsed Arc) finely tuned ability to create bleak yet colorful sounds. This forty minute killer contains aggressive contributions from Roman J (Plague Mother) and harmonic vocal layers from Amanda Howland (Dead Peasant Insurance) all masterfully mixed by Russell on to pro-dubbed cassettes. Cover art by Mike Mignola. Co-released with Atavistic Transformations.

ASR077 Ryan Jewell v. Bbob Drake & David Russell split C50 $6(US)$7(Can + Mex)/$8(World)
Edition of 120, 2011. Versus Series II cassette seven: Side A is a live recording of Columbus, Ohio based electro-acoustic percussionist Ryan Jewell on his home turf at Skylab. Ryan’s live sets are meaningfully patient displays of ingenious object play amplified via snare drum et al. This live document is a window into one of my personal favorite sound artists showcasing his decisive nature. Side B finds Bbob Drake (fluxmonkey) and David Russell (Collapsed Arc) exploring the finer details of their handmade rigs at Negative Space recording studio with John Delzoppo manning the board. “Scatterer” presents Drake and Russell’s collaborative ability to create deeply engaging textural soundscapes.

Field Hymns

EYES – ‘Candle in the Crown of the Dawn’ cassette $6
An astute observer will recognize within the first seconds of the crackling drums that open A Candle in the Crown of the Dawn that this record is supercharged, blown out and stripped down. With the intensity of Black Mountain soaring over a splashing, hypnotic rhythm section, San Francisco’s EYES bypass to the center, to a place beyond knowledge, beyond rock, where human batteries are charged by a Dionysus crystal, where the shimmering organs read your mind, and the sun and shadow voices dwell.  SAMPLE

Zac Nelson – ‘Towards Your Own Worlds’ cassette $6
It’s maybe a bad idea to start a description of a piece of music by admitting you don’t know how to describe it. But we’ll be honest with you: this album synthesizes so much of our taste that it’s like trying to describe the taste of water to a fish. Part crooning electro-pop, part drone, half found-sound and all original, “Towards Your Own Worlds” from this frequent Zach Hill collaborator is a remarkable achievement in the abstract and concrete. Prurient – ‘Wrapped In The Flame Of Illusion, Masked In The Clay Of Behavior’ 2×7” $13
Recorded within the bleak transitional period immediately prior to the sessions that would now become known as Bermuda Drain, Dominick Fernow sketched out four compositions which can only be framed as “ambient power electronics”. Some of Fernow’s most destitute works to date, this release captures Prurient at its most vulnerable and sedate, reflective and rapt. Compositions that throw away that past decade of experience, only to start at the foundation of his art. Original exclusive cover art collage by artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Limited to 500 copies, orange & purple vinyl.

Italian Horn – ‘Red Affair’ 12” $13
Six song 12” debut from Italian Horn, a solo project of New York City writer Anthony Pappalardo. Continuing the home recording tradition of My Dad is Dead, East River Pipe and Sebadoh, Red Affair channels equal parts Guided By Voices, Bailterspace and Flying Saucer Attack. …synth and subtle noise intertwine with short strummed songs creating direct but layered soundscapes. Cover collage created by Robert Pollard and limited to 300 copies.
