Banque Allemande – ‘Willst du Chinese sein musst du die ekligen Sachen essen.’ [Review]

SS067 BanqueAllemande_whilstS-S made the easy decision to release another from Banque Allemande, the second, the dada ‘Willst du Chinese sein musst du die ekligen Sachen essen.’  The sequel is a distinct shift from the thrash kick-off of the band’s ‘Eins, Zwei.’  In their notes, the label rightfully wonder about the state of punk in Berlin, where, despite how hard some may like to pursue the myth of the apolitical punk whatever, there’s no standing still on that moving train. To be fair, I only catch every tenth word in German, and the band sings nothing but.  Plus: less Teenage Panzerkorps and more Horrid Red, the band dredge up the post-punk timbres of Unwound and fit them into a coarser grid and steady 4/4, with new wave angles and a glassy sheen. Further still, the LP demonstrates a decidedly un-punk commitment to extrapolate, with just six tracks, the majority of which exceed seven minutes each. Not that it ever gets that dark, and the Fugazi hundred-guitar dirges never seem to end; but they are German, they like their bass tones low and harmonics searing white. Particularly with its release abreast the debut beer-punk of Spray Paint, the wry yet ruthless menace of “Warmes Wasser” recalls the power by fiat of Billy Bao’s debut ‘Dialectics of Shit,’ even more so as it transitions to the Shellac-ed industrialisms of “Schlaf An Einem Anderen Tag.” Still, the melodic urge is deep, and while the band wield total control of that admission – the chorus of “Suchmaschine” setting like a leaf over the Vic Bondi riff, or the constant air underneath “Schwarz Vor Schwarzer Wand” despite all locked grooves – the punk does not come off. Pressed to 400 copies. Next level collaged art by Jurgen Grewe. Recommended.

I Had An Accident

Jaqkquil/Ectoplasm split C40 $6
jaqsmallJaqkquil is Detroit’s Ice Cold Chrissy breaking away from the moniker Coyote Clean Up for a dosage of fun-loving sounds. For fans of Coyote Clean Up, this new project appears more relaxed and enjoyable. On the b-side is Toronto’s Ectoplasm, the baked out producer with tripped out sounds and beats. Jaqkquil and Ectoplasm create a dichotomy of dark and light, an album of despair cuddles close to its playfulness. A chilling cold sound of Ectoplasm that creeps inside of you and like a disease, it pulls and drains. The electronic drones and desolate tones are bittersweet as they build upon one another and grow into a deranged retribution. The damaged dream hop of Jaqkquil presents a care-free alternative, a dance of accidental electronica that conjures up reveries of nostalgia, stylistic movement, and dreamscapes that are free-flowing and charming. Catch the Great Lakes Breeze.

TEAADORA – ‘Virgin Forever’ C40 $6
teasmallVirgin Forever is a journey of minimalistic folk sounds of TEAADORA. The intimacy of this release is so pronounced, the confessionalist poet allows the listener to feel and be part of the tragedy of life. With somber guitar pieces and an angelic voice so rare and delicate, you listen for the moment when everything will break. The warble haze of raw emotion and inner struggle balances the softness and floods of loudness of this mysterious album. Released by I had An Accident Records on cassette tape and coming soon to Hot Releases on 12″ vinyl. Theatre Intangible (Nashville) calls her “an incredibly rare talent.” Limited to 200 copies on ivory cassettes.

Funeral Club – ‘Red Mountain’ C32 $6
fclubsmallFuneral Club is the California based husband and wife duo Joseph and Jenny Andreotti. Red Mountain brings the experimental side of the band together in a surrealistic dreamscape of organic instrumentation coupled by Jenny’s sweet sounding vocals. The folk traditions mixed in 60’s futuristic psychedelic groove drip in sincerity and nostalgia. A beautiful album to listen to deep in the night or in the early morning as the wind gently rustles the curtains pressed against the open window. Limited to 50 copies.

ESTAMPIDO/NUCLEAR ASSAO – ‘Never Mind The Noise Here’s Estampido & Nuclear Assao Split EP’ 7″ 5€
204489_265283213574997_749327496_oIn the early 90s the Spanish underground was taken by zillions of infamous noisecore bands. Maybe you remember names such as Genital Masticator, Carne, Likidillo Of Kontainer, Septic Goitrous, Pestufator, Agacoples, Petabravas… This 7″ EP includes two current bands, formed by veteran members, who have resurrected all that uncomfortable musical destruction. Estampido came from the south of Tenerife (Spain) and have a secret line-up. After several demo tapes, that offered sordid mega-hits as “No era coca, era cal” (It was not coke, it was lime), they present in this 7″ EP 14 new irritating songs where noisecore, punk and hardcore are mixed in extremely annoying and brief tracks. Nuclear Assao came from from Barcelona (Spain). The band members are grind/noise veterans who have played in Violent Headache, Mixomatosis, Almax, Net Weight, Holocaust In Your Head, Pozilga, ÖBNI, Disface, Uprising, Totalickers and even worst bands. Worshipers of mongoloid humor, they present 26 tracks of a chaotic blend of grind, noisecore and hardcore with extremely absurd song titles. “Never Mind The Noise Here’s Estampido & Nuclear Assao Split EP”, is seven inches EP with 40 tracks of noisecore, in a fraternal coproduction between the labels Hombre que mira al cielo, Infecció Underground, Crit Of Fàstic and Truco Esparrago. It includes a black and white insert and an A3 bulletin with english/spanish interviews to the bands. Only for 5 euros plus postage through the label Truco Espárrago.

PAN

MOHAMMAD – ‘Som Sakrifis’ LP
panact_mohammad1MOHAMMAD is a chamber music trio consisting of Coti K (contrabass), ILIOS (oscillators) and Nikos Veliotis (cello). Based in Greece, Mohammad make long form work drone works that explore the lower end of the frequency spectrum whilst retaining an intense emotional capacity. The results are monumental slow moving physical blocks of sound, both daunting and musical. The sheer weight of these recordings is impressive, the interplay of the musicians and instruments staggering, this end result being an album rich with immense harmonious abstraction which highlights years of dedication to their unique path. Following on from their previous releases (the highly regarded ‘Roto Vildblomma’ CD and the ‘Spiriti’ 3LP box, both on Antifrost) ‘Som Sakrifis’ follows the trio through three tracks of deep space experimentation where the acoustic and electronic blend together as a monumental whole. Listening to ‘Som Sakrifis’ takes the listener on an expansive journey through the netherworld of the low range whilst retaining distinct traces of musicality. The time and space in these works have a logic more akin to that of Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr than any contemporary music references. Monumental monochromatic movement is the order of the day. Sit back, strap in and let these fine explorers take you way out into the nether world. The LP is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, pressed on 140g vinyl. It is packaged in a pro-press color jacket which itself is housed in a silkscreened pvc sleeve with artwork by Kathryn Politis & Bill Kouligas.
