From their respective solo work as Vales/Sound Out Light and Wether/Spectrum Tickets to their beloved podcast Tabs Out, Delaware’s Dave Doyen and Mike Haley are veritable kings (or perhaps court jesters?) in the realm of experimental cassette culture. Collaborating as Roped Off, they combine their powers through synthesis for intense and riveting results. ‘Roped Off Lifts the Invisible Tile’ finds the duo in finer form than ever, carefully layering modular synths and keyboards with a distinct focus on texture and minimalist technique. Almost immediately, you’re hit with a deluge of dripping, trickling sounds as ominous drones and bleak, Carpenter-esque melodies gradually creep into the mix. At just over 20 minutes, it’s like a quick dip into a pool of primordial ooze, but one that’s so satisfying you’ll want to catch your breath and dive back in as soon as possible. From 2010 to 2013, Ryan McGill and Franklin Teagle played shows throughout New York City and a few out of town gigs as a part of some incredible line-ups and through some extremely loud sound systems. Now that the duo resides on opposite coasts, a live show isn’t likely to happen again in the near future, but we’re happy to share a document of some choice performances from the past three years. ‘Afterlive’ collects three different sets: One from 2011 recorded by Francesco de Gallo in Brooklyn, NY, one from 2012 recorded by Dave Doyen in Wilmington, DE, and one from 2013 recorded by Mike Griffin in Albany, NY. Each recording features entirely different material as well as different approaches to bringing composed and improvised sound into the live setting, all captured through raw, open air recordings. Since the first ‘Duets’ compilation was well received last year and there are so many other great duos making music within our orbit, a sequel only seemed natural. This time around we have a whole new set of duos for ‘Duets II’. Some of the same individuals from the first contributed to this edition, but they appear here in the guise of entirely different projects with unique approaches to collaboration and experimental sound. This is also a slightly shorter dose than the original, but rest assured that it is no less potent and diverse, especially when taken as a whole. Features new and unreleased tracks by Dozens, Glass House, Cream Juice, Roped Off, Perspectives, Nite Lite, Pendulums, Urkas, Coyote Image Revisited, and Morae. Grizzly Imploded is a trio formed by Francesco Gregoretti, Maurizio Argenziano and Sergio Albano. They play improvised music with traditional rock instrumentation engaged in sound research that results in a wild assortment of sonic events as a point of contact between the unrepeatability of performative acts, the intensity of noise music and an over-rhythmical, experimental attitude. 2 guitars and a drums for an oppressive and spontaneous growl artwork by truculentboy. Martin Steinebach is an industrial musician since 1994 with his project Coscentia Peccati. Throught different names (Monoid, Stillstand, Compest) he explored different variation of experimental music from ambient via noise to ritual. Also has been collaborating with other artists by creating iterative remixes. He uses his real name for the more experimental releases. “Derotation” is composed from different vinyl manipulations by the different sound sources (children stories, classical music and choir works) and combines them with post processing. It comes out a creaking sound, sometimes ecstatic, sometimes gloomy and full, which interacts with the space through a clever use of dynamics and a fascinating cold minimalist approach. Nuslux – ‘Ede Merco’ C32

Co-released with our friends at Sleepy Cobalt Sound. Roope Eronen is a Finnish visual artist who has been working with sound and experimental music since the late 90’s, specializing in synthesizers. He is one of the founding members of Pylon, Maniacs Dream and the psychedelic free-improv group Avarus. He also perfoms in the long-running, free-improvisation ensembles, Kemialliset Ystävät and The Anaksimandros. In 2001, Eronen, along with two friends from Avarus, established the small independent label Lalalal in order to release music and sound compositions of their own work as well as others. An academically trained visual artist, Roope continues to draw and release visual pieces and comic books. His comic books and graphic novels have been issued by the Finnish publishers Huuda Huuda and Kuti magazine. “The recordings on Ede Merco are made with a tuned Bontempi chord organ attached to two WSG oscillators. All potentiometers of the WSGs and some potentiometers of the chord organ are connected randomly with cables in three glasses of water. By moving the cables and trying different combinations it’s possible to find very interesting and surprising sounds. It also makes the playing exciting since it’s difficult to tell what sound will be emitted. In this way it’s almost like improvising with other players. There are a few additional excerpts of live perfomances mixed in as well.” – Roope Eronen

Packaged in white vinyl cases. Co-released with our friends at Sleepy Cobalt Sound. Arnau Sala is a Catalan multidisciplinary artist based in Barcelona who currently focuses on graphic art and music. Sala originally developed an interest in improvisation, which mutated into composing electronic pieces. He also performs solo as Ex-Con or Exoteric Continent and in the bands Veiled and Vactor. He ran the Ozonokids label between 1999 and 2011 and currently runs Anòmia with Ivy Barkakati. Anòmia is a platform upon which Sala and Barkakati work with diverse individuals and collectives to develop projects of various disciplines in order to share knowledge and achieve common goals. “Receptacles, Agitació i Meta-Sentiment was recorded during summer 2012 in Barcelona. The recordings were inspired by exposure to heavy heat, moisture, and readings on psychology issues from random websites. It is as much about misplaced emotions as it is about challenge. Recorded live for the most part, the sounds in these recordings are derived from combining different synthesizers, from hand-made modules to desktop analog modules which are synced to audio tape (cassette) loops.” – Arnau Sala

Ill Clinton captures the doom of the Gods without sounding thunderous as one would predict. As the cold winters freeze the Earth, so does the smooth jazz influenced beats and atmospheric samples Ill Clinton produces. The blunted chill sounds have a calming end to them. The clear vibe in this album suspends time, maintains chaos, and weathers the storm like a VIking ship sailing across the Atlantic. The eeriness is capturing and telling.
