Sound of Cobra

EMBRYO – ‘MESSAGE FROM ERA ORA’ LP
front x webOne of the most original and innovative Krautrock bands, Embryo fused traditional ethnic music with their own jazzy space rock style. Over their 40-year existence, during which Christian Burchard has been the only consistent member, the group has traveled the world, playing with hundreds of different musicians and releasing over 20 records. This is a never before released jams recorded live during 1976 in various locations. This is the only record of the collaboration with the italian jazz legend Massimo Urbani during a wild live in a church of Udine, Italy.  If you freaked-out on Jimmy Jackson’s organ-playingon „Steig aus“ then „Message From Era Ora“ is right up your alley! Dieter Miekautsch is heavy on his Fender Rhodes and Urbani’s alto sax fits like a glove on this exuberant but relaxed Fusion-Kraut-Session. Christian Burchard’s drumming is as agile as ever, while Uve Muellrich’s bass is galloping alongside Roman Bunka’s funky-psychedelic guitar: „Message From Era Ora“ is much more than just another unearthed archival recording – it’s a rare occasion to actually feel the enthusiasm and joy that fuelled the jams back in 1976. Catch the spirit! 500 copies edition, 200 on splatered vinyl, 300 on black vinyl.

Nothing Out There

Caligine & 石雲 / 雨旋 2CDr
KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERALed by Gabriele de Seta, owner of the Monstres Par Excès print, Caligine is an open collective. Here Gabriele, with Chinese friends, puts out a special two-faced album, half-noisy, half-melodic, overall filled with the beautiful open-mindedness that’s so specific of the collective. Here are his words about the records : çŸ³é›² (disc 1) “Caligine as an immaterialist trio (San Nuvola, Pupa and Gregorio Samsaro) with 李劍鴻 as himself, ghosts, UFOs and rice wine, locked themselves in the Kinggo Bar during a clear and icy day in a drowsy Hangzhou, and sounds were made. Thanks to 老李, Madamoiselle Dupin and everyone else there, that days, in the round year two thousand and then.” 雨旋 (disc 2) “Caligine as a drifting moneme met 朱小龍 on a windy beach in the Nether Lands, and under providential seagulls they recorded the dialogues between two guitars, some spare strings and the accidental toys of luminous troublemaker 雨旋. Never too far a place.” 2 x 5″ CDr. Limited to 50 copies.

GOD 20 KAJKYT – ‘II’ 2LP/CDr/CS boxset
god20smallGOD RECORDS is very proud to announce the release of a new album by KAJKYT, available for pre-order (release date: October 2013.). Unlike his previous project, Krst, which was single piece in four parts, the follower contains eight tight structured pieces, avoiding any extension of the form and compressed into massive dark ambient “pop songs”. Once again focused primary on voice, especially with it’s quality in silent articulation, the record deals with various moods, from hard industrial clashes, to very silent and lyrical passages. Hard beats, heavy bass and long drones with all present voice, are the most significant characteristics of the album.

HSN04: Bin Idris – ‘Muqadimmah’ C34
2-100pxBin Idris is Haikal Azizi’s solo project when he’s not busy poetry-screaming & axe-shredding with his proto-metal quartet Sigmun. Went to the same art school, I barely knew him personally, until the first time we shared a stage in a show. Bin Idris is a rare love at the first sound. While Sigmun was a lucid Sabbath-esque, Bin Idris inherited a spiritual Fahey-ian ride that sometimes could be very chaotic. I remember on the show that evening, 2 of his guitar strings was broken off during a long piece set, but he didn’t stop it, otherwise he continued few other songs with only 4 strings before he finally finished the set. The raw & strange energy that always present during a Bin Idris set. Muqadimmah is his tape debut that draws those kind of energies. Recorded between 2012-2013, it consists some finest materials of his guitar shredding, banjo plucking, chiming vocalization and even some electronics doodling~the later was pretty surprising since I never found it in his live set before. One solid debut. I’m very excited with this edition & really looking forward where this project leads. Hand-numbered edition of 33, real-time dubbed on NAC red tapes, packed in a guitar string sleeve with unique guitar strings inside & classic hand-stamped silver/red natural resin wax seal. Each copy is unique ala Hasana Private Press objets d’art.

TWILIGHT OF THE CENTURY – ‘Hibernation’
TD62 smallFirst available recordings of this long-running (yet rarely playing) improvisational unit, consisting of Ray Hare, Mike Bullock, Linda Aubry Bullock, and Eric Hardiman. Coming together in 2008 as a one-off merger between Century Plants and Rise Set Twilight, TOC quickly took on a life of its own, with each of the four members providing a unique voice and set of experience. This tape showcases a single session, with the group creating 4 epic tracks that range from hauntingly atmospheric to menacing and ominous, with countless stopping points in between. Mysterious synth textures, Linda’s treated voice, Ray’s guitar and inimitable vox, and duelingdoom-laden yet contemplative bass riffs from Mike and Eric are the core ingredients, and together they form a whole that defies description. Features cover art by Stunned Records’ Myste French. Dig in!

Primate Pyramid/The Harbinger – ‘Sleeping Backwards/Sliding Universe/Irradiated Metro’ split C44
Home dubbed, white tapes, Edition of 24. A supremely solid split, upon which sublime sonic seances from Toronto’s Primate Pyramid and New York City’s The Harbinger occur. As “shown”, both solo projects excel in heavier, reverberating expressway psych/tech-noir – rhythmically mesmeric, elegantly erosive. Primate Pyramid’s two long form ‘organic-fi’ miracle trips deal in burnt, cascading (per)mutation, while The Harbinger’s “Irradiated Metro” consists of minimal deep-dungeon rave bits and other digital surges. Cinematic and menacing.

Deathbomb Arc

DBA124 BLACK PUS – ‘Zero’ 12″
BLACK_PUS_0_GREEN_COVERWhen Lightning Bolt rose to popularity in the early 00s, audiences were left with their jaws dropped at how a rock band could simultaneously be exploding with more power and ecstatic energy than ever heard before while being refined down to just a duo of musicians on one drum kit and one string instrument. A decade later, and Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale has taken this impressive duality to an ever further extreme. As Black Pus, he now operates completely alone while wrangling even more force and chaos into a tightly knit rock act. With a World’s Fair sensibility of “the power of human ingenuity and dedication”, Chippendale moves his body across the drums at an Olympic level of expertise while also taking advantage of the most modern in electronics to generate wild, noise-inspired sounds from the mechanics of his drum kit. The act itself is a singular machine, harnessing everything both nature and science have gifted to humanity. A true American rock act, turning the frontiers of the unknown into pure head banging fun. 2013 has seen Black Pus release a critically acclaimed album, ‘All My Relations’, on Thrill Jockey, and tour the globe across America, Japan, and even Dubai, with a full European/UK tour to come this October. With the 12″ ‘Zero’ on Deathbomb Arc, Black Pus showcases the essence of the act with a nearly unbroken 40 min blast of what the act is: virtuoso drumming and “where the fuck did that come from?” noises. Expect no pop songs here. This is the force of everything Chippendale has been working towards for nearly two decades now with no remorse. ‘Zero’ is packaged in hand screened artwork by Brian Chippendale himself. Limited to 500 copies.

DBA125 I.E. – ‘Most Importantly’ 12″
DBA125bandcampI.E. (aka Margot Padilla) has been helping audiences lose their inhibitions for nearly a decade now. Emerging out of the same LA “Ravesploitation” scene that gave us Captain Ahab, I.E.’s music exists somewhere between bedroom K-Pop star, chola rave queen with a computer programming job, and outcast from the mall punk scene. Regardless of how you describe her music, Margot has always been intent on bringing the fun to everyone. So while a great deal of her shows happen at LA mainstay The Smell, some of her most memorable shows have happened at places like a farm with goats in the audience and even at Hot Topic (where she pretty quickly got kicked off stage). While her music focuses on dancefloor ready with heavy nods to wide-appeal, Margot uses this platform to reach people with a very unique sociopolitical voice. Young, poor, Latinas, rarely have representation in music, but through I.E. they do. Margot has a knack for communicating some pretty dark truths about her own life in a manner that is really fun without sacrificing how serious she is.

Holodeck Records

Sensum and Clunch s/t C32
Sensum and Clunch (HD019) is a fully animate modular-synth EP which explores all modes of human emotion, gently hovering over (and sometimes into) the uncanny valley across its four meticulously-crafted, expertly honed modular synthesizer pieces, equal doses minimalism and experimentation. Artwork by Chris King, and mastering by Guy Davie at Electric Mastering, in an addition of 200 chrome / pro-dubbed / laser-imprinted cassettes, with the largest fold-out packaging we’ve ever done.

Sneaky Snake – ‘Eventide’ C46
Sneaky Snake’s Eventide is an expansive, spaced-out, synthesized CS46 that creates an endearing sense of electric-serenity that extends far beyond the full-length’s running time. The LA based duo dissolve concentrated drops of ambient synth elegance into vast ocean currents that slowly immerse their listeners in waves of palpable regenerative frequencies. Edition of 200 chrome cassettes with exhaustively choreographed packaging designed and photographed by the band.

Good Stuff House – ‘Untitled’ LP
Good Stuff House couldn’t be more aptly named if they tried. This trio of Scott Tuma along with Zelienople’s Matt Christensen and Mike Weis has been conspicuously absent for a while, but this reissue of their untitled debut serves as a reminder of their potency. Americana is a term that gets tossed around often, but in these dusty hollows it gains meaning. Translucent tones hover in empty space, trembling as they hesitantly coalesce. Folk axioms are broken down into dust so they can be woven back into something new, something beautiful.

Marie Davidson s/t EP
Montréal is a hotbed these days for forward-thinking music. Marie Davidson is a local mainstay, a member of Essaie Pas, Les Momies de Palerme, & Hotel Monochrome, but on her self-titled debut still manages to take an adventurous turn. Cold electronics ride shotgun with minimal, stripped-down beats providing the ideal counterpoint to Davidson’s always potent vocal delivery.

Troller s/t LP
For how heavy Troller proves itself to be throughout its debut release, it’s striking that the brooding melodies and gothic song-architecture remain unusually endearing, evocative, and…well, catchy, for such an overall crushing effort. Troller is the most song-driven of Holodeck’s releases thus far, tapping into the underworlds of drone, noise, and various ‘waves’ of dark electronica, as well as pop, though never owing allegiance to any one influence in particular.
