PHORK – ‘K’ CS
After a kaleidoscopic trail of releases on Orange Milk, Opal Tapes, NNA Tapes, and Noumenal Loom, PHORK now brings his latest foray into throbbing, kinetic dance music to the Sacred Phrases family. With ‘K,’ Neal Reinalda (also known as People’s Higher Order of Royal Kinship) veers his careening, psychotropic grooves into the infinite. Opener “SWiM (OBE1)” is a 15-minute run of Blondes-like pulsing, hitting bliss point after bliss point with complete elegance. The Los Angeles-based producer carves his way deep underground on “Ride Up,” a subversive set of tectonic low-ends and skittering, blipping textures that emit washes of magma-like heat and aural sediment. B-side opener “Know What Im Sayin’?” maintains a rolling simmer of bass-heavy tones and murmered dementia that plays out like a dubby, dancefloor-ready version musique concrete. Closer “SWiY (OBE2)” returns to the cool, rhythmic hysteria of ‘K’s’ opening moments. Things take a turn for more mechanical, Chris + Cosey or mid era-Cabaret Voltaire, examining tripped-out sets of poppy industrialism that can’t help but move its hips in the slightest way. A 12-track collaboration ‘tween Mr. Mom and Chris Daily, is a sampledelic funkified ode to watching TV…vibing out on the grooves of theme music + lazy days (& nights). In our opinion both producers have outdone themselves with this album. One look at the varied sources should knock even seasoned samplers/beatmakers on their asses…Katamari Damacy, The Beatles, Night Court, Seinfeld, Milton Babbitt, Julia Holter, and Anthony Braxton are just a few of the samples woven into the original tunes presented here.

Holgans – ‘Holgans Are Dead’ C23 $7
Holgans Are Dead collects the last six tracks from this iteration of Calgary psych-pop dreamers Holgans: songwriter Ryan Bourne (also of Sleepkit and Chad VanGaalen & the Bleach Wipes) and vocalist/visual artist Kiarra Albina, with friends. Produced between 2013-15 by Bourne, Holgans Are Dead hits the psychedelic sweet spot: swirling pop rocks in the nature-drone served lush and spellbound, oozing with serene depth and texture. Edition of 77.

Luxardo – ‘Ogni Giorno Eccitazione’ C40
“Ogni Giorno Eccitazione”. This words are full of lust, glitter and soft-erotism, in a kind of italian-raucous humour. As well, Italy is part of this fiction. This thug named Luxardo is the chansonnier of all that. Imagine an obscure mid-eighties-Serge Gainsbourg croonin’ in fake italian on the tracks orchestrated by Armando Trovajoli, or at least a soft-porn comment for an italian porn comedy, which “Ogni Giorno Eccitazione” actually is. It was 1978, and Luxardo ruled that scenario, in certain ways you can find the same directions Battisti/Mogol reached and spawned in that years. In another life or another level of reality, the deliquente named Luxard could be also the bass player of a noise-funk band or the director of a cult orchestra named Tredici Bacci. But here what’s real it’s transfigurated by his double mirror: let’s have a Martini and listen to this Romantico jams.

Stuart Chalmers – ‘Loop Phantasy No.3’ £4
Recycled music, scavenged sonics – Stuart Chalmers specialises in the music between the music. The audio between the audio. The barrels in the barrel room need cleaning mummy, let me fetch the candles. Loop Phantasy No.3 sees this Regis of Re-appro-Pop set his sights on the myriad glossy productions which percolate through the collective head-brain every day. The CD skipping in the local Costa, the mini-disc dancing cripple-ways due to bouncy jog – all haunting reminders of a perfect world beyond the current. C44 with yellow tapes & pixel-hated collage (by Mr S. Chalmers). Limited to 48 copies.

Yokonono – ‘Haunted Head’ C80
Ben Cockayne & Dafydd E. Spink present a huge slab of psyche-focusing rumble drone under the fantastic monnnnnniker Yokonono. Gentle throbbing static & rolling low-tone feedback heave & hoe forward over the course of 40 mins including para-mythic states in both listener & listener’s favourite brewer. One for zoning out to on long train journeys, watching landscapes fade or focusing the mind ahead of that crucial exam (kid specific). Oooooooohhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm. SM063 J.G. Wright – ‘Sorcerer of Sound’ CS
“Sorcerer of Sound” or “S.O.S.” is a concept album by Justin Wright of Expo ’70. A collection of analog improvised experiments that harken back to the early days of private press releases. LP was released on Polytechnic Youth last Summer. Long-term devotees to Wright’s recording career will no doubt dig that although aspects of the recording equipment and improvised approach here may alter slightly, the trademark of cosmic drones with the other worldliness aura to his music is thankfully, very much accounted for. Jeff Brown has released albums on Rainbow Pyramid, MMMsound and under his “Spacement” project he has self-released 2 albums with a 3rd on Further Records. “Blinding Dawn” explores more ambient experiments conjuring alien terrane and ancient landscapes.
