Stunned

Stunned no. 137 Plankton Wat/Super Minerals split C40  $7
You were right — it was impossible for us to stay away for long. So here’s one final tape before Stunned is out the door for good. We’re thrilled to have been unexpectedly given a chance to produce this years-in-the-making split between Portland brothers Plankton Wat and Super Minerals. Side A commences with four season-inspired songs by Plankton Wat that calm the tides of the mind and prepares a scene of tranquil Pangea. Nectar flavored spirals of guitar, flute, percussion, and banjo drip forth as dusk falls, and nocturnal creatures gather to listen from the edges of Dewey Mahood’s glowing camp. Side B finds M. Geddes Gengras & Caitlin C. Mitchell doubling Super Minerals’ size and sound, joining in deep Green Machines Studio icaros-weaving. Winds, guitar, and drums twist into thick vines, fueled by mighty herbal allies and Third-Ear harmonics which plunge the band toward a blazing red dawn. Final edition of 111 pro-dubbed & imprinted c40 tapes with double-sided jcard and insert.

Olli Aarni – ‘Ylitse’ C35 $5
Olli Arni’s work as Ous Mal has had a kind of entrancing effect on me ever since I first pressed ‘play’ on his 2010 album Nuojuva Halava. Since then, I’ve been drawn to Olli’s music almost magnetically. Throughout all his music, there is an apparent lightness, perhaps a statement that says something like, “just enjoy this”. There is no pretense. Ylitse presents the same assortment of candid expressions as Olli’s other works. In 4 pieces, Olli weaves blankets of sorts that sound like panoramic vistas of mountains or snowy plains. The scenes are nearly still, and most of the movement you perceive while listening will come from within you. These pieces are composed in much the same way as Ous Mal works, but the end results are quite different. Instead of jovial and poppy loops, these are long, simple pieces that sound like scores for silent films. This is music that can be repeated many times with little or no listener fatigue. Listening to Ylitse feels much like standing in a frozen field for hours, feeling all the effects of the cold and wind, but somehow still managing to resist decomposition.

Jeremy Bible & Jason Henry – ‘Marker/Magnet’ 2xcassette $10
Originally released individually, Bible & Henry’s Marker and Magnet are two complimentary volumes in a set that covers quite a bit of ground, and covers it quite masterfully. The duo’s work here is mostly in the area of electroacoustic improvisation and musique concrète. Jeremy and Jason manage to utilize the tiny musical space they’ve alotted themselves and stretch it out to a length of over two hours. Typically I’d say this is an accident waiting to happen, but these fellows have pulled it off with class to spare. Never does anything sound recycled or looped, never is there a moment where the music returns to a point. It is always winnowing, sifting, threshing through waves of electronic abstractions and obscured acousmatic sounds. The result is a confounding experience in which I find myself searching for some familiarity and finding little. There are moments of potential clarity, but those are seldom and surprising when they arrive. The rest of these compositions are steeped in mystery and endless engagement. This is not background music; please listen with care.

Her music pieces and drawings are often improvised and inspired by her travels and her night visions. Charlatan – ‘Equinox’ LP
A warm, filled with rich tones, re-issue of one of the earliest tapes of Charlatan. After the Triangles Lp on his own Digitalis label this is Brad Rose’s second vinyl release under his new solo project moniker. Synthclouds and starchords on a carpet of white hiss. Brad Rose is one of the most active personas in the current adventurous contemporary music scene. As label honcho of Digitalis records / limited and online magazine Foxy Digitalis he’s constantly in search of exciting new groups/artists. Add to that numerous solo and collaborative projects and you can rightly consider him as one of the spearheads of the experimental underground scene of the last five years. This release marks one of the highlights from his output last year, now rightly re-issued on heavy vinyl with two bonus tracks! The sky is limitless. Limited to 300 copies. Art by Christian Richer. Mastering by Brad Rose.

Beartown

Vomir – ‘Untitled’ CDr £4
HNW warrior VOMIR as you’ve never heard him before…not really. Romain Perrot presents the great bear with a slab of juicy, medium rare noise wall. 73 minutes of nothing/everything experience that with break your bonce over and over again.  VOMIR’s mission statement is one of lack. At times, Beartown speculates on whether this whole ‘absence/void’ actually exists… could it be that Perrot’s work signifies the suspension of the suspended ‘lack/void’ meaning parallex? Probably, not really.  VOMIR’s work presents an absence so powerful that not even nothingness can survive. One must project any notion of coherence upon this lack, only for it to be gradually mauled… it’s meaning decaying and diseased, its objectivity all buggered and bolloxed.  There’s something jovial about it all though isn’t there? The great bear certainly thinks so… it’s like a great big, slight aggressive fuzzy hug, a fleece of everything. Edition of 70. Hand spray-painted CDRs, collage artwork, free black bin liner back for listening and a snippet of easy reading prick-lit to aid with your mush-resting afterwards.

Night People

NP059 Peaking Lights – Imaginary Falcons LP reprint
This is the debut full length LP by Madison Wisconsin’s Peaking Lights. Members Indra Dunis (Numbers/Rah Dunes) and Aaron Coyes (Rah Dunes) created a stunner that’s full of hypnotic analog electronics, pulsing drum sounds, perfectly somber pop layered keys, blown psych guitar, and Indra’s warm drifting vocals. This record is all its own, everything it needs to be, and it won’t disappoint any expectations of its harmony and beauty. Groovy, spacey, heartfelt music for a new age. Art work and silkscreen by Shawn Reed. LISTEN

NP152 Bebe Fang C152
Dutch duo Bebe Fang shares members with Eklin who released a cassette recently on Night-People as well. Bebe Fang although stripped down in comparison to Eklin in number of members has many similar aesthetic and sonic tendencies. They present the same kind of foreboding but elegant glacial ambiance but with a different sense of minimalism and soulfulness. The mood is always in a state of flux with Bebe Fang never quite settling always subtly evolving depending on the listeners thought or vision moment to moment. At times unsettling in tune with vintage horror soundtrack vibes and at others hypnotic and almost heavenly the greatness lies in the subtle details of Bebe Fang’s music. LISTEN

NP151 Golden Hours – ‘Floating Weeds’ C20
Golden Hours is long running Portland based flower pop guitar band with ties to Eggy Records, The Polyps, The Woolen Men etc. who predate much of the recent resurgence of this sound. Distinct pop and twee flavors of sound ride around on the upbeat waves of guitar, keys, and distortion. A rock solid effort with no overt posturing to retro tendencies, just honest well made creatively written catchy indie pop, that rides a little bit like other excellent contemporary lady fronted post punk/twee/ etc groups like Grass Widow etc. A really killer follow up to the excellent “Spooky” cassette that came out on Eggy awhile back. If you missed that def. check this one out.  LISTEN

NP149 Sore Eros – ‘Sickies Volume One’ C32
Very siked to get a chance to release something by our western Mass. friends Sore Eros, a great live band thats even better on record and always pushing the limits of their sound and song writing. A band truly doing their own thing in a time of much retro posturing. The articulation of their sound and approach is always interesting because it embodies so many sources of potential influence and sound language. At times folky, sometimes rocking, always seeping with dreamy atmosphere and warm psychedelic melody their representation of pop music radiates, resonates, and sparkles like big sun on syrupy water. This cassette is very well recorded and even professionally mastered. One of the finest NP releases thus far. LISTEN

NP148 Hot & Cold – ‘Conclusion Introduction’ C20
Hot & Cold are two brothers Simon and Joshua Frank who divide up time in Beijing and NYC/Toronto respectively. This tape had its origins on the very stellar Rose Mansion Analog label out of Beijing and we felt it fitting to re-release it state side to try and increase its profile as this is an excellent collection of tracks for this young duo. Some cool Martin Rev. fuzz tones shake over propulsive post punk bass and drum machine pop to create some weird cross section of south east Asian style psychedelic garage groove and loner darkness ala 39 Clocks and the like. Killer. LISTEN

NP147 The Pink Noise C26
With previous vinyl releases on prolific contemporary indie labels like Sacred Bones, Kill Shaman etc. Montreal’s Pink Noise are not an unknown presence in underground music circles. This new cassette plays out similar to a 7inch in duration but packs a solid punch of glittery psychedelic synth punk and raucous post punk nihilism. Coming off even a bit more odd then previous releases this current material has a cold annihilated feel similar to early Chrome. Visions of late night drugged out concrete jungle lurking come to mind.  LISTEN

NP146 Bomber Jackets – ‘Larching’ C32
Bomber Jackets made their release debut recently on a split 7″ with the Rebel that is out on Savory Days and Kill Shaman and this tape gets deeper into the odd world they create. Consisting of members from the excellent UK group the Pheromoans and with ties to other recent NP release Charcoal Owls this cassette offers further necessary obstruction of contemporary art punk and synth aesthetics. Crisp odd synth pop tones collide against the distinct vocal style represented on many of these fellows other outputs. Overtly a hard to pin down affair as would be expected but with of course no disappointments.  LISTEN

NP145 Alps – ‘Golden’ C32
Newcastle NSW AU main man Chris Hearn, long time solo ripper and old school vegan punk with a deep record collection who hits US tours traveling by Greyhound. Like the wild mind behind them his recordings tread all territory from ambient synth to fuzzed out garage punk steps out with his first release on Night-People, but sitting solid in a discography that is as deep as it is diverse. Chris released a killer solo LP last year himself under the Past Futures label that is as good as anything we heard from down under last year which is a high mark for how much great music is being made in Australia these days. This tape sits like a nice extra chapter to that LP and retains Alps diverse approach.
LISTEN

NP143 The Garment District – ‘Melody Elder’ C40
Melody Elder is the debut release by Pittsburgh-based The Garment District, the new musical project of multi instrumentalist Jennifer Baron, who was a founding member of Brooklyn’s The Ladybug Transistor (Merge Records). Recorded both with Kevin C. Smith in Friendship, PA, and in her home-base Golden Mountain studio. Sometimes hazy, sometimes articulate, the songs and sound collages of Melody Elder lie somewhere at the intersection of pop music sensibility, soundtracks, experimentation, and synth-driven ambience. Making an appearance on Melody Elder is Jennifer’s cousin Lucy Blehar on lead vocals, and legendary Television Personalities/Swell Maps’ member Jowe Head on bass. A truly distinct new voice and musical presence is presented by The Garment District. LISTEN

NP143 German Army – ‘Papua Mass’ C40
Germany Army comes from mystery periphery LA zones, transmissions from submarine or some Hollywood studio closet, who knows. The Kill Shaman axis might have some hidden knowledge on the subject of said origins but we can’t figure it out. Regardless this cassette gets deep into a mutant lab rat labyrinth of synth tones, concussion drum machine hiss, and warped spoken vocals. Post punk poetics ranting in some forgotten dream hole speaking to the speakers up close and personal.  LISTEN

For Noise’s Sake

fNs025 O. Barras/dohince split CDr
37 minutes of dirty noise beats and techno. O. Barra tracks more hardcore oriented, dohince ones more techno oriented. Mud dance. Limited edition of 20 hand numbered copies. It comes in cardboard sleeves with paste-on colored covers, print on disc, housed in plastic sleeve.

fNs029 Cruudeuces – ‘Dead Hand’ CDr
I like to think of drone music as an ocean, you can relax staring at it and after a while get bored, or you can dive into it and find a whole new world where get lost. Cruudeuces has been putting out amazing drone/noise sounds for quite a while, through some of his now defunct labels or self editing, and recently through his awesome Ghetto Naturalist Series label. In response to my request, the 36 min. long “Dead Hand” is less quiet and more noise oriented than other of his previous releases, with subaquatic basses, plenty saturation, crunchy electronics, wind squeals, slowed down voices, all of which takes you to a fascinating new world. Play it loud and dive in. Limited edition of 30 hand numbered copies. Laminated colored covers, with a colored collage insert and color print on disc.

fNs065 Botox Vox – ‘Rough Voz’ C30
New project of only voice and effects, weird and insane sounds. Limited edition of 20 hand numbered copies. Xeroxed artwork on colored paper, black cassettes and cases.

fNs067 Placenta Popeye/pier split C40
Side A: Placenta Popeye is a french duo of guitar & bass dark free noise rock with a bunch of impressive releases in labels around the world. This side contains a lofi repetitious riffs, pissed swarming guitars, muddy basses, nice disturbed voices and screams. A very addictive jam. Side B: pier offers six short tracks of no-wave/free noise rock improvs, that sound as if DNA raped Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band under a rain of debris.

fNs070 Ülpeskriva – ‘I’ CDr
New unit of drums-sax-trumpet free noise blast by O. Barras (Au, Plonk Moist, ahno drei…) and RN Juristo (shalocins, pier, Plonk Moist…). 33 minutes of free chaos. Limited edition of 30 hand numbered copies. It comes in cardboard sleeves with paste-on covers and insert, print on disc, housed in plastic sleeve.

Laser Palace

Stoned Boys – ‘Burning Cities Forever’ $6
They are an amazing experimental electronic band from Russia. This release explores a lot of different electronic genres of varying from Noise to Rave and all the history between. It is very much in line with a lot of the new chaotic/psychedelic electronic sound happening in the U.S, but delves further to create a sound all their own. It is a limited edition of 50.

Jedediah Logsdon – ‘(The) Ancillary (E.P)’ $6
from Chicago. We featured some of his work on a split with Candescent in 2010. His latest release is presented in three segments that deal with sound manipulation and emotion. His process features use of field recordings, modular synth, and granular processing to create a moody atmosphere that very much represents his creative mind. The new E.P comes out on November 7th in a limited cassette format of 30.
