Blackest Rainbow

Natural Snow Buildings – ‘Beyond The Veil’ CDr £6.5
Brand new full length album of cosmic psych folk drone from Mehdi & Solange. In March, the duo will be heading out on their first ever proper tour, here in the UK. Beyond The Veil is being released especially for this tour and will be on sale at shows and through select shops and mailorders. The discs are hand stamped and the covers are hand numbered in gold ink, as always features stunning (if somewhat dark) cover art by Solange. Edition of only 300 copies.

Sylvester Anfang II – ‘Perzische Tabijten’ LP £11
Promised last year and now finally ready to land, The GPS is proud to unleash the epic new full length from legendary Flemish kraut / psych jam masters Sylvester Anfang II. “Perzische Tabijten” (“Persian Rugs”) features 6 super heavy, densely extended jams, deliciously tribal, quasi religious, utterly whacked out pieces that eternally build and pound at the senses. High on lush drones, pounding shamanic rhythms and eastern tinged instrumentation with flittering moogs adding to the “middle of the woods” textures throughout… Recorded on an old farm in Sint-Pauwels (between Gent and Antwerp), in one take with no overdubs, the band strived for a more Eastern vibe and approach than previous releases, which partially explains the album’s title. Following several sold out releases across a number of great labels (Eclipse, K-RAA-K, Aurora Borealis, Blackest Rainbow and under their own “Funeral Folk” imprint) the LP isn’t expected to hang around long. Everything previously from both artist and label is sold out so expect the same here… Beautiful pro-printed psych sleeves in an edition of 500 only.

UNDERCARRIAGE – ‘Homunculus’ CDr £6.5
Debut disc from the new collaborative project between Nathan Bowles (Black Twig Pickers/Spiral Joy Band) and Lisa Cameron (Venison Whirled). A real odd one this, lots of rattling and scraping of percussive objects creating 3 tracks of abstract improvised surreal sonic explorations. The sound is matched by what I can only describe as the weirdest sleeves I have every had the joy of releasing (and we’ve had some weird ones), but this one is far out, the guy at my local print shop looked baffled when he was printing these for me… Edition of 100 copies in full colour covers with insert.

Avant Archive

Billy Gomberg – ‘Waiting in Poor Lighting’ C36 $5
Billy Gomberg presents a magnetically warped version of warmth with this recent collection of four pieces. Over two sides, we get exposed to this kind of creeping mixture of hiss and drone that collaborate to create feelings of fondness and anxiety. Probing it reveals almost nothing, but experiencing it yields something wonderful. This music will creep up on you. You will find yourself loving it and wishing you could listen to it all the time. It is discordant and noisy at times, but the warmth makes it feel like a friend. Billy Gomberg is your new best friend.

The Goodwillies – ‘Face in the Stain’ C40 $5
The word on this master is that the music was recorded around 10 years ago. Before launching Avant Archive, I’d asked Tim if he’d be into releasing some music with me. It took some time (understandable, family man that he is), but I was pleasantly surprised to hear from Tim recently with this recently re-mastered work. Face in the Stain is another solid testament to Tim’s ability to capture attention and keep a strangle-hold on it. Totally different from some of his previous solo excursions, these two pieces exhibit a kind of panorama of sounds, each blending into the next, in sequence. The charm lies in the fact that while standing close to this exhibition, I almost feel like nothing is moving at all. But in stepping back, I can see all of the pieces that contribute to the whole, and from this perspective too, it is beautiful. Another fantastic contribution to The Goodwillies discography, and it’s welcomed with open arms at Avant Archive.

Hakobune – ‘Evergreen/Faraway’ C55 $5
From the intensely-prolific hand of Takahiro Yorifuji comes this pair of long ambient pieces. It’s difficult to envision the signal path of these infinitely soft-edged pieces leading back to an electric guitar, but perhaps that is what makes this fellow and his music so charming. Evergreen/Faraway presents two nearly-static glimpses into Haokbune’s life, with just enough movement to keep my attention. This is a sonic representation of sifting, constantly revisiting pieces of memory and sensation. But since one cannot step into the same river twice, every step is a new experience.

Nothing Out There

Les Holchteins – ‘Le Diktat’
Ever wondered, where are the Pink Floyds, the Léo Ferré of our cursed times? where are the musicians that could be all the while poets, experimenters, and still fill up stadiums of people? Well, maybe they’re out there, but don’t bother with crowds anymore. Maybe they are tending to our wounded in the sick houses; or filling our tanks with gasoline, or building our brick houses… who cares. Because they still remain apocalyptic poets at heart, and I’m proud to present to you today their pamphlet, Le Diktat. The perfect soundtrack for our happy last year of the world. Les Holchteins’ record is sixty minutes of unique poetry and wild sound collages, unlike much of what you’ve heard before. Uncannily funny and all the while, in your face. You got to listen to this. Harassor – ‘Hater of Man’ [Review]

This little black metal gem was released a little too subtly by Husk, drafting on the kick of their recent Swamp Horse 7”, and muddled by a curious similarity to ‘Hater of Life’ by Husk’s Josh Lay.  Harassor is a Los Angeles three-piece with an LP repress to their fame.  They play chunky death metal hooks like Howl to a thrash like Bone Awl.  Hardly esoteric Euro shit, this is staunchly an American problem: the 8 songs on ‘Hater of Man’ were recorded about six years ago – surely there’s a story there, not least of which is how Lay wound-up with them – and the verve of their malaise has turned a bit to irony where time gnaws away at the evocative assault in titles like “Killed by Inanity,” “Ripping Hammer,” and “The End of Your World”, or the liner notes proclamation that “Harassor grimly demands the complete extermination of mankind”.  Not that the genre abhors a vacuum.  This aesthetic is scorched to the sound and abnegating imagery, most comparable to Akitsa (with all the stylistic adjustments that a thicker mother-tongue will bring), as the band cleanses the bright overtones of live recording through a lo-fi dub, plying the blackened depth not in symbolic production ala Burzum et al, but in the distance between this raw performance and its cynical dispersal, like white poison in the L.A. water supply.  Heavy cards and labeled tapes.

Recital

Sean McCann & Matthew Sullivan – ‘Vanity Fair’ LP
Greetings, here we have Recital’s inaugural release, “Vanity Fair,” Sean McCann & Matthew Sullivan’s debut collaboration album.  A fitting introduction to the ethos of Recital; the desire to turn a new page, to more accurately project what is significant and engaging in contemporary music. Matt and I had often talked about collaborating, as our musical understandings and interests align. Both drawn to minimalism and graceful ambience, we would trade tidbits and slivers of ideas casually over coffee or wine. For the better part of a year, we procrastinated our theoretical project, which in retrospect allowed our ideas to ferment. So when it actually came time to pop the cork and record, everything fell right into place. What manifested in the studio was lush and enchanting. The pieces are quite varied, and range from the majestic to the tormented, occasionally synthesizing an almost humorous blend of the two. Presenting a manipulated animal and glockenspiel march, a chamber string and glass rhapsody, and a somber harp and phone ballad – it challenges the listener and expresses the development of both acclaimed artists. It is a timeless, refined effort, that both Matt and I are very proud of. Edition of 560.  Initial orders will be the deluxe red-wax edition coupled with an exclusive CDr, “In Concert.” limited to 115.

Radiant Husk – ‘Micromegas’ CDr
Seeing Matthew Erickson perform live is an impressive experience. The sound he gets by blasting his saxophone through his Fender Twin literally shakes you to the core. Erickson has a great ear for experimental music; exercising tasteful timing and restraint, which I am finding to be more and more important. Whether performing in the sax-guitar duo Sudden Oak, or solo as Radiant Husk, his sonic presence has earned the respect of many.  “Micromegas” is a collection of live improvisations recorded in San Francisco before his departure to St. Louis. The album titles are street names near his recording/practice space, making it a memoir-esque document of his time in the Bay. What a lovely place. The pieces are soaked with nebulous tenor saxophone, who’s layers build and build, inventing a storm of tape saturated drone. Many of the songs are loop-based, slowly slipping out of orbit – forming allusions to minimalism. However, “Micromegas” contains a fierce spirit that minimalism can often lack. The album is bookended by hypnotic chord organ pieces, which are particularly enchanting. Another strength of this album lies in it’s sense of completion, the finished product has a strong identity. This could be your “go-to” contemporary sax-drone record, it certainly is mine. Full color artwork in jewel case, with hand numbered and stamped insert. Edition of 200.

Troy Schafer – ‘Evening Song Awaken’ CDr
Here Recital is presenting its first “classically” inspired program. I have come to enjoy classical music more and more over the years, finding it to be perfect background music for drinking, cooking, or relaxing in style. Although this album isn’t exactly background music, as it is bold and often intense with emotion, it carries a poetic quality which is as warm and whimsical as my favorite symphonies. “Evening Song Awaken” is the first real full length release by Troy Schafer, a young man from Wisconsin (affiliated with the Second Family Band, Burial Hex, Spiral Joy Band – to name a few). To me, this album is set aside from the rest of his body of work, it feels more pure and focused. Schafer’s ability to intertwine passionate composition and technical proficiency is rare and inspiring. Throughout the album counter-themes emerge and propel the pieces though frantic climaxes. These flares are contrasted though many slow pastoral reflections. You can really hear his devotion to the music. Last year, when Troy contacted me about recording a release for Recital, we discussed the ambition to produce a beautiful album. I am proud to say this ambition was realized. Schafer is destined for great things. Full color artwork in jewel case, with hand numbered and stamped insert. Edition of 200.
