Brave Mysteries

Eolomea cassette
100 Copies.  The cold synthesizers of David Reed (Envenomist) mix with the decaying wreckage of André Foisy’s (Locrian) guitar atmospheres, creating tremendous cascades to rage against Foisy’s violent vocal attack. A uniquely blackened cosmic power electronics.

Broderick Young/Electronic Meditation Program split cassette $6
TBR’s newest split tape release features two composers working with the medium of tape as a musical instrument in and of itself. Broderick Young’s “The Mixtape” involves the composer actually cutting tape to create loops and textures, then sticking it all back together with scotch tape. A stereo or three may have been destroyed creating the final mix. Tupac, Stravinsky, Mas Alli De La Musica Disco, and more all make appearances on this one of a kind bit of musique concrete. Electronic Meditation Program’s “Weltshmerz,” was made using 1/4″ tape loops, found cassettes, Casio keyboards, organs, etc. most of which were found in various states of disrepair.  Then the sounds were pieced together to create EMP’s unique auditory journey.  Edition of 25.

ATR 142: Red China – ‘The Wax Ocean’ CDr $8
Red China have been making oddly accessible psychedelic weirdness for almost ten years now, and The Wax Ocean sees their singular craft honed to a fine point.  Songs like Paco 35 and SCIENTIST (the latter’s refrain of “Black President!” an homage to Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and apparently not the head of the current administration) are downright apocalyptic.  Horn sections, sideways rhythms, blasts of noise – it all comes together on their strongest set of songs yet.

ATR 043: Sound & Fury – ‘Songs To Make _______ To’ cassette $5
Keith Bedore’s raw, Dead Milkmen-y punk songs find their full realization in this minimalist three-piece.  Simple drums, rolling bass and Bedore’s stinging guitar and howling yelp examine the trials of love, murder and most things in between.

ATR 044: Lizzie Temple Black – ‘The Afterman’ cassette $5
Ross & Worden, principle songwriters of Red China, let their freak flag fly high on this set of true oddness.  Past the harrowing avant-blast of opener “Jenny Quarry”, these taut-loose songs head to some fairly dark (yet often whimsical!) places and feature instruments from every corner of the globe.  See “I Was Slaked” and “Polyester Slacks” for catchy examples of their weird craft.

DYLAN ETTINGER – ‘LIFETIME OF ROMANCE’ CD/LP
longtime friend and NNF familia Mr. Ettinger returns with his first full-length in about a year and a half, and it’s an overt evolutionary step outside his usual discographical realm, into damaged new wave synthesizer worship. (scope the epic vid for the opening track, WINTERMUTE, if you havent already: http://vimeo.com/36334248). on LP and CD.

SAND CIRCLES – ‘MOTOR CITY’ CS
an effortlessly faded and inspired fusion of midnight synth moods and minimal warehouse drum machines with a subtle sci-fi noir/derelict metropolis vibe. have been obsessed with these tracks since we first heard them.

WHITE POPPY – ‘I HAD A DREAM’ CS
debut release by Vancouver artist Crystal Dorval is a mesmerizing opium den of lo-fi bass/drums rhythm tracks, spiraling guitar lines, and transfixed vocal raptures that float in the air like pollen. absorbing and uplifting.

Metadrive – ‘Same’ C60 1200¥
One of the most obscure/mysterious italian noise artists in 80’s. “On the face of it this tape should be given immediate condemnation as it contains a cover version of ‘MAGGOT DEATH’. Considering this factor, it is a miracle, but this is mostly an excellent tape. An extreme TG at times, a LEIBSTANDARTE SS MB at others, not forgetting the occasional flicker of NWW! Well recorded, plenty of good variety. The titles of the tracks, however, are pathetic! ‘Talkin’ about’, ‘Industrial Lullaby’, ‘Radiopower’ you could be forgiven for thinking that the music is ‘rockabilly’. Musica-ly recommended, however. Limited to 44 copies.

M. Geddes Gengras – ‘Purity’ C46 $7.5(US)/$10(WORLD)
m. geddes gengras from los angeles, ca is on a warpath. stepping it up with an increasing output of recorded material, his recent live sets show an artist keeping his performances dynamic and unique. on purity, ged plays melodic sequences darker than his previous efforts. slowly delayed with overwhelming bass, definitely took the whole 1/8th into some electronic hell.

Earn/Mirror to Mirror C30 $7.5(US)/$10(WORLD)
Split tape from earn (matthew sullivan) and mirror to mirror (alex twomey) that was previously limited to those that either heard select songs performed live or grabbed the earlier edition of this tape on the last earn/mirror to mirror tour. matt’s recent obsession with tape manipulation (think his last earn tape hell on earth on his label ekhein or his collaborations with sean mccann) takes earn’s cutting, drenched guitar to a slower, more desolate territory.  “a man seeking sympathy is a man standing still, a man waiting to die.”. mirror to mirror’s side soft years continues alex’s focus on short-form compositions. layers of melodic, melancholy piano and synthesizer polarized by bouncy, carefree arrangements.  once painful memories realized in the present that can only make you laugh now, turning that frown up into a twinkle.

Monsturo – ‘522’ C15 $7.5(US)/$10(WORLD)
Monsturo is david rothbaum, a los angeles musician that creates recordings that are extremely patient and rewarding with subtle detail. 522 was recorded to cassette on a tascam 688 using a roland SH-3a synthesizer. said to be the final monsturo release, minimal static tones ascend together left to resonate.  the spaceship is leaving, but hovered out on a high note.

All three new tapes special $20(US)/$26(WORLD)

MAGIC TOWERS – ‘N4’ C32
Black cassette – clear flexy polycase – cover printed on Risograph – blue/orange fluo.  artwork by CANEDICODA.  Magic Towers is a duo born in Vittorio Veneto and active from summer 2010: two nomad and egocentric knights. They use synths, delays, tape echoes and space sounds in order to compose or improvise ambient and delayed atmospheres and trips. The project is based on the inner observation and the visual contemplation of the sound. The image of the Tower – connected on one hand with the journey, the passage and the transit, on the other with the static position – reflects the attitude of MT: an observer looking for the right observation point. Space ambients, rhythms from the deep, melodic inserts and an evil beat out: in contemplation of the immense Void. N4: recorded in Milano during the All Soul’s Day 2011. It’s the fourth part of the “Magic Trips” series.
