Damian Valles – ‘Nonparallel (In 4 Movements)’ LP/CD
Nonparallel (In Four Movements), is composed and arranged entirely from samples from the recordings of avant-garde Western classical composers and computer music released by the Nonesuch label in the 60s and 70s. In working with the material, Valles wanted to enter into its very lineage, to forge a dialogue with it, to both extrapolate something essential from it and contribute to its legacy by using it to create an original work some three decades later. Divided into four movements, it is a nuanced album of subtle complexities that took roughly three years to complete. The process started with recording small sections, randomly selected from pieces written and performed by the likes of Elliot Carter, William Bolcom, Charles Ives, Charles Wuorinen, Stefan Wolpe, et al. The source material was then carefully cut up, rearranged, stretched & heavily manipulated. In addition, the decision to sample directly from the original vinyl editions was important in order to capture the crackles and noises generated from the records themselves. In using them to create a backdrop for the new pieces, the intent is for the old sounds to mix with those generated from the newly pressed work to create another aspect to the overall soundscape. A striking departure from Damian’s previous recorded output, ‘Nonparallel’ is equal parts anthropology and alchemy, at once documenting the prescience, relevance and richness of his chosen source material and creating something bracingly new from it.

(PHR-93) HAMMER OF HATHOR – ‘Saw Isosceles’ C40 6€
A fine packer of a lost LP by United Staters, Hammer of Hathor, a boy-girl duo of many faces + talents. They mainly shred guitar and bang drumskins on this one in a very primitive way and we-don’t-care attitude. The result not only flirts w/ atonal punk and heavy jam energy but repeatedly fucks w/ the brain of the non-music listener. The unconventional way of instrument approach amplifies a universe of electrical guts purely captured with analog and monophonic equipment. Edition of 50 copies w/ glossy color j-cards and electrique-blue tapes. TRAILER

Foot Ox – ‘Music Without Words’ cassette
After three full-length albums that collected a wide array of players and instrumentation, Teague Cullen has created his fourth album entirely on his own. However, that’s not the only difference that seperates this record from the others. Not only is this record an exploration into a variety of new sounds, but it contains a quality that sets it apart from most records made today – and that is that it wasn’t created with the intention of anyone hearing it. Created while listening to a lot of TLC and various pop music from India, and containing a mix of vocal and instrumental songs, including a song made entirely of of field recordings of plants (though you wouldn’t know that by hearing it), this record has a unique charm and holds a warm feeling of selflessness. Limited to a hundred pro-duplicated and imprinted cassettes, with unique hand-painted covers by Teague Cullen.

Eolomea – ‘Eolomea’ [Review]

Eolomea, the black metal Patty Waters, made a self-titled tape capturing a similar horror film of the prolific Black Swan releases – not to mention the sound of his filmy surface – set in icy tones and melodramatic intensity.  The duo is David Reed on synthesizers and Andre Foisy on guitar.  The open space of these rhythmless compositions allows Foisy to play with form as he continues the heavy effects (mostly air, but sometimes earth) of his Locrian day job.  This brings out the Reed of Luasa Raelon more than Envenomist, trading dull pulses for singing organ tones, generating fantasy mise-en-scene that is inherently hostile to the default human worlds of rock music.  The two modes persist in a subtle patchwork (best heard through headphones) across the three tracks, which, despite evocative titles – “Sootfall and Fallout”, “Ordovician”, and “Seven Before the Throne” – appear a series of variations on Foisy’s guitar themes, which at their best appear heavily, if hastily, erased.  C40 with repeating programs, 100 copies.

(KimDawn050) Villages – ‘Staying and Waiting’ 3″CDr $4
I’m so pleased to be able to present the work of Villages for our 50th release. Ross Gentry’s music is a unique mixture of sweet melodic and textural ambience that pulls on heart strings and washes into the subconscious. This release sees him at the top of his game with two movements of pastoral bliss reminiscent of the more open ended work of Dead Can Dance. Presented in a numbered edition of 50 hand stamped 3″ cdrs.

(KimDawn051) Jérémie Grandsenne – ‘Paradise Shadow’ 3″CDr $4
Accomplished French artist Jérémie Grandsenne presents this brief piece of introspective solo piano music to get lost in. His understated playing leaves room for the listener to settle into a mood of existential wandering and reflection. No accompaniment or embellishment is needed – this is a pure statement of singularity. Presented in a numbered edition of 50 hand stamped 3″ cdrs.

(KimDawn052) Mass at Dawn – ‘Trimutation’ 3″CDr $4
Mass at Dawn is the work of Nashville resident Dylan Simon – an evocative presence in the experimental underground of middle Tennessee. Dylan’s interest in mysticism and the occult give a strong direction to his bizarre sound. Elements of home brewed psych rock and minimal synth music combine with Dylan’s possessed lyrics about otherworldly visitors “made of pure thought” for this trip into the darker areas of our collective unconscious. Photo provided by the artist – manipulation and layout by KD. Presented in a numbered edition of 50 hand stamped 3″ cdrs.

GEM JONES – ‘SYMPHONY IN P’ C30 (CGIF-004) $4.20
Gem Jones unleashes a fresh set of liquid groove on ‘Symphony in P’. Music that is polished and on point in its composition, but with enough thrash and imperfection to still feel human in its execution. Never a wasted guitar solo and never a blown synth tone, nothing but the crucial sleaze needed to accomplish the uproarious, but well maintained, and respectable party atmosphere that will never get too sloppy, but will still freak out any and all narcs. It’s ultimately about love, but ultimately about respect too. Recorded straight to 4 track in late 2010 in Iowa City all by his lonesome. 100 copies.

RUN DMT/TRACEY TRANCE split C30 (CGIF-006) $4.20
is the second tape in CGIFRIDAY’S ongoing split series. This release also fulfills an unspoken promise between the two wanderers to meet one another on the astral plane. Tracey Trance and Run DMT’s material complements one another to a wildly geosynchronous level considering they have never met or spoken. Come along with Tracey Trance on some “Little Retreats” and be whisked far away from the late-night televised rerun world that you’ve been trapped in all winter. Run DMT picks you up along the side of the dusty path with promises of new episodes of X-Files to be played in your dreams. Seriously. 100 copies.

Scumbag Relations

Pod Blotz/Mark Lord split C26
Cover artwork realised and designed by CF. Professionally duplicated and imprinted cro2 cassettes. Professionally printed, double-sided j-card. Edition of 200 (silver ink on blue shells). Experimental artist Suzy Poling birthed Pod Blotz in 2002. Poling’s sound is an interesting cauldron of tape manipulation, organ drones, melodies, electo-acoustic sounds, synthesizers and voice. Pod Blotz is a solo project that is derived from conceptual artistic endeavors and sonic explorations relating to Science Fiction, phenomenon and material reactions. She is interested in the regeneration within materials and sound. She works with photography, video, film, video, broken glass, multidimensional lenses, chemistry and sound to celebrate and elaborate the phenomenon and permanence. Suzy is based in Oakland and represented by the Zg Gallery in Chicago. Mark Lord is the solo moniker of artist Christopher Forgues. Forgues goes by C.F. in the art world. His graphic novel series, Powr Mastrs, is published by the Grammy Award Winning Picturebox, Inc. His story “Mosfet Warlock and the Mechlin Men” was included in The Best American Comics 2009 edited by Charles Burns. Since May 2011, he has published a monthly comic strip “Monorail High” in Mothers News, a monthly newspaper in Providence, RI. His work has been included in the Kramer’s Ergot anthology series and the French graphic zine Nazi Knife.

Adam Bohman, Dylan Nyoukis & Friends C68
Cover artwork realised by Dylan Nyoukis. Layout and design by Eric Frye. Professionally duplicated and imprinted cro2 cassettes. Professionally printed, double-sided j-card. Edition of 100 (silver ink on black shells). Adam Bohman is a member of Morphogenesis and The London Improvisors Orchestra. He also regularly performs alongside his brother Jonathan under the guise The Bohman Brothers. Their sound art oscillates between states of the absurd and (sonically) grotesque to highly articulate explorations of extra-musical sound. Electroacoustic music and free-improvisation could be regarded as co-ordinates on the grid. However, unlike the hermeticism of electro-acoustic music or the purism of free-improvisation, the Bohman’s freely quote from any source and aren’t afraid to show it. So you get Varesesian sound montage supporting spoken word material sourced from a pub menu, or frenetic juxtapositions between amplified shoe brushes and a frenzied tape cut-up of 17th Century instruments. The Bohman aesthetic can be a dense and tangled thing to unpick and describe. Various and nefarious sounds and artistic influences merge and collide. Dylan Nyoukis’s work exists on the fringe of contemporary avant garde art and underground DIY insurrection. As a leading light in the UK’s tape/CD-R scene, Nyoukis has long functioned as a rallying point for artists working to clear a space for original, non-idiomatic sound and feral performance modes. Alongside his sister and long-term collaborator Lisa (Dora Doll), he founded the Chocolate Monk label in 1993, an early experimental music imprint that combined hi-jacks of outmoded media – cassette, CD-R, pen and paper – with cutting edge investigations of the limits of form, while functioning as a home for Nyoukis’s own projects, Prick Decay, Decaer Pinga, Ceylon Mange, Blood Stereo and countless one-off collaborations. His current group, Blood Stereo, is a duo with his wife, the musician and artist Karen Constance, that explores hand-cranked 20th century technology in combination with epiglottal gymnastics and free music modes inherited as much from punk rock’s mutilated aesthetic as utopian art styles. His solo vocal and tape work continues to push the envelope in terms of the expressive options offered by amplified physicality while his rejection of any kind of theoretical backdrop liberates him from servitude to any specific agenda. He remains a singular voice. Over the years he has collaborated with artists as diverse as Ludo Mich, Chris Corsano, Thurston Moore, Sun City Girls, Bill Nace, Heather Leigh Murray, Phil Minton, Neil Campbell, Usurper and Wolf Eyes. He lives in Brighton, England. – David Keenan, Glasgow, June 2009

MV & EE – ‘SPACE HOMESTEAD’ CD/LP
Apart from the fact that “MV & EE” is slang for zero gravity and that they’ve been doing it consistently “better” with good vibes/jams they still WANT to give you more of the best of them. This is their “space homestead” and for good reason this wall of sound applied thru DIY sensibilities was recorded over the course of a year in 9 different studios, presenting as clearly as circumstances can permit, a living idea right here in the now of what it is all about. These are sonics in motion, the satiate plural perfect supply of the hunger unusual, the picturesque in sound. Grab a shuttle for your spectrasound furniture any time in any aeon and dig the volume of their trip.

Lighten Up Sounds

THE GILI GILI MEN C52 $6(US)/$7(Can/Mex)/$9(World)
Crackling voice and reed surrealism, in which the line betwixt live and pre-recorded sound is left blurred and frothing. The Gili Gili Men is an elevated West-Coast snake-charmer trio featuring mystery members from such sonic subversives as Million Brazilians, Fake Hospital, and Visitor. Dusty lock-groove trance meditations, piled with damaged vocal gargle/shriek incessant cartridge static and loose-fitting horn vomit. A series of strange improvisational harsh-hypnosis sessions documented directly to plastic plates by Arrington De Dyoniso, having been recorded live in real time to his antique lathe-cutting machine in Olympia, Washington. Those crackly grooves were then played back and further abused by that same group of warped freakers, fully jammed upon and sent a skipping. Wailing reed abuse and deep non-jazz wrangling, forever soothes the serpent. These recordings ruminate upon a true-life political protest action in India, in which an angry local snake-charmer set loose a writhing basket of live poisonous snakes inside a government office building during business hours. Real time duplicated White shell cassette with full color labels comes packaged with ancient “entwined serpent” card stock J-card, hand numbered in a clear Norelco case. Profound confusion tapestries for illicit social upheaval. Edition of 50.

MEN of SCIENCE lathe-cut picture 7″ $20(US)/$23(Can/Mex)/$28(World)
Men of Science is the new collaborative duo of Andreas Brandal and Matthew Himes. Dense grinding textures and layered atmospherics composed from violin, electronics, tape loops and broken dreams. This new single is presented as a lovely square lathe-cut picture disc 7”, serving as a short but powerful preview of the upcoming full length cassette due out later this summer. Crude industrial textures and churning mechanics lapse into powerful violin drones and bleak ambient soundscapes. Beautiful and meticulously handmade square picture discs ( freaking thick! ) cut good and loud to clear acrylic featuring full color “Nurse Fetish” romance novel artwork on both sides. Super limited edition of 25 un-numbered copies come protected in clear heavy plastic sleeve. Strange times manifest. Edition of 25.

MOLE HOLE – ‘Seclusion Tactics’ 3xC20 boxset
Lighten Up Sounds is proud to present this soggy new selection of abstract transmissions from the main Murk-Man himself. Mole Hole is the solo bummer-electronics project of Matthew Himes, reclusive small-town misanthrope, and chief proprietor of the Lighten Up Sounds imprint. What we present here is a long time coming anthology of six new ten minute tracks, each thematically sequenced for their respective sides. These are sprawling and depressive works focused upon the psychological effects of physical isolation and severe emotional deprivation.  Makes for a full hour of deep mud-pit spelunking. This lovely box-set presents a gurgling expanse of “warts-and-all” extreme-sound coping mechanisms, ranging broadly from minimal deep-fuzz delusion to bizarre aggressive assault mode. Tape machines, amplified file cabinets, creaking springs, Wavetek signal generator, Korg Monotron, rusty sheet steel, xerox machines, violin scratch, obscure field recordings, mysterious found sound and even glimpses of seething vocal rage floating up through the fog. Includes an exclusive creeper-zone track composed in honor of the legendary cult-classic horror film Re-Animator. Matching set of three transparent blue shell cassettes with black and white F. T. W. labels comes packaged in a heavy audio-book album featuring stark black and white “Blindfold Lesson” artwork with Seclusion text pasted inside. Hand-numbered edition of 44. Nobody cares, get used to it. Edition of 44.
