Maurizio Bianchi & Ryan Martin – ‘As Strong As Death Is’ 2xC30
TEMPLATE-final1outlineEdition of 100. Spanning the course of two years to create, legendary Italian noise composer Maurizio Bianchi & Ryan Martin (York Factory Complaint / Detrop) took on the pilgrimage of scoring the abstract marriage of the Song of Solomon. Employing prepared electronics with accompanying strings and tape, this ambient religious collaboration seeks to flesh out the union, to understand the universal desire to be one. Constricted lullabies walk down the aisle to create a consortium of moving, ghost-like consolidation. Mixed and edited by Anthony Mangicapra (Hoor-paar-Kraat) and mastered by Kris Lapke (Alberich). Magnetized onto two cassettes and housed in a vinyl tape album.

Dead Skeletons – ‘Orð’ 12″
soc10_cover“Orð” is Dead Skeletons follow-up release to “Dead Magick” – an album that sold out in nearly one day. “Dead Magick”’s theme hymn “Dead Mantra” was an art installation soundtrack turned spiritual battle song turned psychedelic underground smash hit phenomenon. The 2008 track was the starting point for a cosmic concept created and immersed by Icelandic artist Jón Sæmundur, as a tool to come to terms with his 20 year struggle with HIV. Further developing the Dead Concept, the 12” EP “Orð” consists of four tracks of reverb-drenched rock n’ roll meditation – reminding the listener to embrace life in death and death in life. The songs “Odauðleg Orð” and “Odauðleg Orð (Museum Version)” were both created as sonic enhancement to yet another one of Sæmundur’s art installations, while the pop quality-ridden “Dead is God” further delves into the band’s “All is One, One is All” philosophy. “Cemalym” is a dark, traditional Turkish folk song (most notably recorded by Erkin Koray), although with lyrics translated into Icelandic. Music for when you meet your maker, as Dead Skeletons puts it. Sound of Cobra’s second pressing of “Orð” comes out on a one-sided white vinyl 12”, in a limited edition of 400 copies, with a silk screened B-side and a paper recycled, tobacco coloured, cardboard sleeve.

MASTER MUSICIANS OF BUKKAKE – ‘Far West’ CD/LP
On “Far West,” the Master Musicians of Bukkake mark a turn from their Totem Trilogy. If the Totems were an expression of yang energy, then the “Far West” cycle is the yin that took seed within the trilogy. What happens when you travel so far east looking for enlightenment that you pass your destination and are headed west again? The Master Musicians of Bukkake take an earthly and shamanistic approach to these influences and infuse it with Krautrock pulses interweaved with acoustic guitars, intricately layered rhythms, hazed-out modular analog synths, brassy stabs, and cultish choirs. A true psychedelic, audiophile experience to dissolve your body in.

Goaty Tapes

CYCLOPS – ‘THE FIRST YEAR’ $6
Cyclops_Cover.1f82ea3e39877a5fd03Recorded at Channel 3, Tampa & Dungeon C, Providence. Cyclops is SHV & Russian Tsarlag, a gruesome twosome of leathery grooves and toilet rock. Guitars mutate around drum machines, Tsarlag waxes depressive over droopy synths, languid anthems repeat endlessly, a monster mash. There’s also some real sex appeal. SHV’s beats hiss like more than club soda, Tsarlag’s guitars curl alluringly, a bleach party for two. Gone are the loner moods, replaced with a mysterious liaison.

VINCENT OVER THE SINK – ‘BIBLE BASHERS’ $6
VOTS_Cover.103e013I reissued this tape because it rules. I keep Bible Bashers between the car seat and the center console, or on top of the tape deck, or in my ass pocket; it’s on constant rotation. Recorded at Wolfgang’s House, Glenbrook Lagoon, Blue Mountains, Australia, 2009. Grim pianos melt over dumb horns, downer chords drowned in dishwater vox. I keep seeing domestic interiors with moving walls, skeletal fingers hitting single keys, a hall of mirrors, goosebumps. Vincent Over The Sink are no longer. They were a magnetic flash of weird in an otherwise predictable succession of DIY styles. Bible Bashers is one of only a few releases documenting their curious flavor. I usually like the transience of home recordings, but some things are worth remembering.

Mystery Attacks

Mystery Attacks – ‘Two’ C27
two cover animal psiThe second cassette release by Mystery Attacks is available now. The tape contains four tracks of crude industrial noise recorded early 2013, and mastered this May at Enemata Productions. The new tracks reflect further time served in factories of consumption; the uneasy sounds were assembled with whatever tools were at hand. The tracks concern weakness and breaking points, as well as themes of apprehension, evasion, and ensnarement. The newly-released commodity is a C27 pro-duplicated chrome plus tape, red shell with black imprint, and a basic B/W photocopied cover. Each cassette is wrapped in additional printed matter. This release, catalog # ROUGE002,is available in an edition of fifty-five copies.

PURR 0032: Sawi Lieu – ‘Pasaraya’
Sawi Lieu is one of a new crop of experimental artists hailing from Jakarta that are beginning to gain notice in international communities. With Pasaraya, Lieu takes listeners on a nostalgic journey through neon arcades and sonic macro malls. Snaking beats and vibrant synths slink through murky alleyways, sounds and smells emanating from behind a concrete curtain that hint at an alternate universe, subsumed within the virtual. Over the course of 68 minutes, Lieu plays many different hands, though. Bright, aqueous techno consumes the folds of “Subjectless World” while the zoned-out electronics of “Familiar Landscape” and “Layar Maya” are an aural opiate, soothing to frayed nerves. Every track offers something new and different. Pasaraya is the memory of growing up in Jakarta’s busy streets, and whatever dissonance that conjures, Lieu’s vision is an astonishingly beautiful place to let yourself go.

PURR 0033: Aloonaluna/Motion Sickness of Time Travel
Lynn Fister has had an incredible 2013 so far and still just seems to be getting started, expanding her unique collaborative vision of sound and visual art. Following a stellar releases on Hooker Vision and Cosmic Winnetou, Fister is pushing herself into new realms on her half of this split with the even more prolific Rachel Evans of Motion Sickness of Time Travel. “Apnea Method” finds heavy, glitched edits pulsing along while her ghostly vocals echo into oblivion, presaging a centrality for her voice that is upheld on centerpiece track, “Stutter-Sleep Dance,” with its unusual rhythm and capable deconstruction of contemporary dance trends. Aloonaluna closes things off with the relic that is “Shifty Eyes,” like a dusty voodoo artifact unearthed in the swamps of Louisiana, before a flip-of-the-tape conjures Evans’ contribution. The three track song sequence that composes her half of the split is more broadly thematic than Fisters, sounding much as Pitchfork described it, like the “trailing echo of a church choir,” or a mid-point in the swell of real and fabricated voices associated with formalworship. Their character of reverance splits the tape along lines of orientation, setting Fister’s apprehended experiments to play against Evans’ earnest engagement with form.

PURR 0034: White Poppy – ‘Drifters Gold’
White Poppy is Crystal Dorval, a multimedia artist based on the west Coast of Canada, where she makes experimental and self-described “therapeutic” pop. Drifter’s Gold was prepared in anticipation of an LP to follow this August on Not Not Fun. Named for Don Blanding’s poems inspired by the beauty of Hawaii, Drifter’s Gold will almost certainly live up to the mantle of “therapy” for anyone kindly drugged by soothing string-playing and hazy vocals into its blissful, precociously decorated ambient swells. Though many of the songs take their inspiration from everyday life and the sadness of inner confusion, all were deliberately crafted to address Dorval’s own fixation with the seasons and their influence on the temper of her recordings. Easily building on the very perceptable influence of Blanding’s Hawaii, Drifter’s Gold may just be the ideal hedge against the summer doldrums during this year’s hotter months.
