Sonic Meditations

SM051 EXPO ’70 – ‘Filer à l’anglaise’ CS
SM051CSThe LP version features 3 extended jams from the latter days of the working relationship between mainman Justin Wright and Matt Hill (prior to his wonderful recordings under the ‘Umberto’ moniker). Recently unearthed by Justin specifically for this vinyl release (although watch out for an extended version for cassette only later) the set starts with the wonderful zoned out pulse of “Acerbic Lament” interspersed by Wright’s piercing guitar tones and textures. “Winter of Discontent” is more organic, otherworldly and in places reminiscent of some of the early Popol Vuh catalogue. The reverse features the epic sidelong “Ceremony of the Blind”; constituting 3 parts and to these ears represents one of the finest sides to the huge Expo 70 catalogue. A compelling cosmic soundscape punctuated by evolving waves of carefully constructed synth and guitar drone with flurries of percussive pulse, particularly on the closing section “Eternal The Night”. Another essential addition to the ever growing Expo 70 collection, this cassette combines the Deep Distance LP tracks with 2 bonus tracks. Limited to 100 Cassettes + download.

SM053 LAUBE – ‘Schwach Gekerbt’ CS
SM053Cassette.inddLaube are back and not interested in playing around. None of the tone has been left to chance. The raw material has been mastered by James Plotkin, the sound testifies that it’s been worth waiting for three years. “Schwach Gekerbt” is the logical progression to its predecessor “Ausmerzen” in regard to Laube’s notion of Adagio. Again self-recorded in their rehearsal room with Resl von Konnersreuth as their patron saint, the exercise of this material yields sonic oneness in its discrete and continuous moments. It’s a machine, like the artwork suggests. A well oiled, organic one. And if oil is its outcome, you get the many facets lying in here. Laube used severe sounds for that, like those of broken cymbals, a ’73 Fender Rhodes Mark 1 piano, a Fender Studio Bass tube amp, Korg MS 20’s filters and assembled field recordings, samples, bowed single-string-drones and tape loops. On the track “classic cream” you even get to hear an adapted tape of the german poprock group PUR. “pewter grey metallic“ has been recorded in a church, solely played in the rain on a pipe organ. There are details to discover, like the unusually interacting bass and Rhodes lines, sometimes entwining, than punctual arhythmic, dissonant, dissolving in subtle harmonies – all too slow over cutting drums.Just a few aspects could have been scraped out in these lines and writing about music is always unsatisfying. So after listening again to this record after quite some time, I am left speechless, finding myself thrown back into that reality the record began with: having a cup of tea or coffee, still some oil on the table. Faintly crenated- that’s the translation of the german title, is actually an understatement, this album is leaving some marks. Limited to 80 Cassettes + download.

Plastic Uno (band) – ‘Orgy of Sweetness: Unology’
unologyWho is the Plastic Uno (band)? You are NOT the Uno (band). In short, PU(b) is a conglomerate of eccentric home-tapers from Texas. A duo mainly, but open to all noisemakers here and there, they go by many names, Ted & Charlie…Professor Platypus & Blas Famous…etc., etc. Orgy of Sweetness: Unology represents a handful of amusing tracks recorded by PU(b) from their beginnings in 2004 (“Bring Back Billy Yule” and “I Have Huge Glasses”) to their tentative reformation in 2013 (“Meat Lake Saga” and “Octopus Wrangler”). Stylistically the group adhere to traits reminiscent of many home-fi weirdos from R. Stevie Moore, Half Japanese, The Residents…you get the picture…So giddy-up now and sample the compilation of an outsider rock enthusiasts dreams (or is that nightmares?)

Ѫΰϯᶓԃ Ʀѧϊᵰѣѻὦ – ‘Intuitions’ CDr $10
mutedrainbow-100pxPro-duped CD-R, thermal print, hand-assembled, sticker-sealed, folder with window. Stamped, numbered edition of 50. // Michelle Proksell (aka Muted Rainbow) resides in Beijing and loves/lives China as a dreammachine of animated .gif images, weird montages and awesome t-shirts. She also makes music through an open site of collaborative gradient exchange called Ѫΰϯᶓԃ Ʀѧϊᵰѣѻὦ: deaf improvisation based on colors and hues, blue(s) gospels in unknown languages, seas of shimmering drones, electro-acoustic processing and outdated acid folk. Classical without class, psychedelic without psyche, songwriting without writing. Intuitions is the result of sparse improvisational sessions conjured in Shanghai bedrooms and living rooms during 2012. Hours worth of recordings were trimmed, mixed and mastered with poetic freedom at Zulmà t studio in Rome, Italy. For this incarnation, Ѫΰϯᶓԃ Ʀѧϊᵰѣѻὦ involved Michelle Proksell, Gabriele de Seta, Gregorio Samsaro and Pupa Tang, some strings and a wide array of electronics.

BABEL – ‘STURM und DRANG’ CDr
Babel-sturm-100pxPro CD-R, thermal print, spray painted white digipak, numbered edition of 25 // STURM und DRANG is part 2 in BABEL’s trilogy of improvised, extended technique pieces for prepared electric guitars. As with HEURTER (part 1), guitar and bass are primarily treated as percussion instruments. These pieces also feature delay loops, junk percussion, wind instruments and electronically manipulated vocal performances. Metallic, post-modern textures and washes of glittering tones staring at the sea, listening to a steel mill in the distance.

[INV002] M. SAVANT STIFLESON – ‘Ga Garden’ 3″ CDr 4€
MSavantStifleson_GaGardenSince more than 20 years, Californian cyberdelic artist Jme Gugginø has been involved into numerous musical projects, ranging from rock (Dreadnot, Zide) to industrial/noise music (QUUQ, Xyphosenphia), but his current endeavour as M. Savant Stifleson is definitely his most surprising one. He has indeed managed to summon into a medley of exquisite miniatures the quintessence of his musical wanderings, without it looking like a shambles or a clumsy juxtaposition of over-experimental tunes. Instead, in Ga Garden, M. Savant Stifleson delivers a journey through truly new musical microcosms, a lush cascade of micro-cyberpop gems and fragmented glitch-funk pieces where Dada-meets-Joyce musical structures and post-language poetry are flowing intertwined.

[INV001] ICHTYOR TIDES – ‘Mortisle Elytrion’ CDr 5€
IchtyorTides_MortisleElytrionOn Mortisle Elytrion, their first LP to date, Ichtyor Tides refines their sound into explorations of the mighty structures of glitches, forged in acidified lakes of drones. This time, sharpen in the core of this barbed stream, an insidious spoken word poetry sometimes emerges. With its beats, its clicks, its glitches and its noises as such lethal metronomes of our daily routine, Mortisle Elytrion draws the shape of the industrial version of the Isle of the Dead (as a modern day Arnold Böcklin would picture it), that lies behind every factory, every office building, every urban structure that sucks you from your self-conscious being and draws you into a mechanical hell of boredom, despair and resignation. Exclusive cover art from visual artist g.cl4renko.

DNT

DNT067 – Digital Natives – ‘Long Homesweetened Entry’ CS $6(US)/$16(World)
If you’re unfamiliar with the brolific catalogue of Jeff Astin’s Digital Natives, then oh do you have some catching up to do! Take the warped Americana journey through a thrifted sound collage that sounds like it was sourced from a salvaged tape deck found in the desert. Professionally duplicated yellow cassettes with hand-glued labels and a double-sided text collage from vintage sources individually hand-colored with a unique DNT spraybottle-watercolor concoction.

DNT068 – DJ DJ Tanner – ‘Home Entertainment’ CS $6(US)/$16(World)
I first heard DJ DJ Tanner a few years back when I received a mysterious package from the label Warm Gospel, which included two DJ DJ Tanner tapes. I was immediately hooked by his use of mesmerizing found sound samples and loops. On this tape you get twenty songs that seem to emerge fully developed, then fading just as quickly..like a less avant-garde and slightly more expansive version of the Residents’ “Commercial Album.” This tape was recorded in March of 2013 and edited at Manifest Station. All sounds on this tape originated from vinyl. Professionally duplicated red cassettes with hand-glued labels and impressive home-entertainment-system-artwork, individually hand-colored with a unique DNT spraybottle-watercolor concoction. Comes with a 16-panel folded mini-poster/zine, also handcolored. Limited to 100.

DNT066 – Uton – ‘Kun Korallit Puhuvat Pilville’ CS $6(US)/$16(World)
DNT is proud to announce this new cassette by Finnish ayahuasca-droner Uton. Jani Hirvonen instructs the listener to use stereo headphones. For a stronger effect, listen near midnight in a dark room (or with minimal light). Do not let anything else disturb you. Recorded in Rennes, France to four-track July-August 2010. Originally slated for release as a bonus cassette with “Echoes in the Wonderland” LP (DNT058), it now sees the light of day. Full color deep-sea two-panel artwork on pro-dubbed purple cassettes with brain coral imprinting. Hand numbered out of 100.

DNT064 – Bobb Bruno – ‘Black Gel’ CS $6(US)/$16(World)
A warm welcome back to the tuff bunny, Bobb Bruno. “Black Gel” started as a synth improv on Korg Delta, Nord Wave, Casiotone MT400V and DSI Tetra in his bedroom, later properly recorded in same bedroom. Best listened to with the lights off. For “Years” Bobb was fortunate enough to get Sheridan Riley (drums, Avi Buffalo) and Cameron Stallones (guitars, Sun Araw, Magic Lantern) to play on the track. lectronics/psych head nodder. An edition of 100 hand numbered pro-dubbed and imprinted tapes with a scary mutated-bunny-swan design.

DNT033 – Bobb Bruno – ‘Clown’s Castle’ CS $6(US)/$16(World)
We have now reissued “Clown’s Castle” after being out of print less than 48 hours since it’s 2008 release. Same music, same artwork, in an edition of 100. Here’s what we said the first time around: “I first saw Bobb Bruno about two years ago at The Smell in downtown LA. I had heard of him prior to the show (he also plays in Goliath Bird Eater and Knit Witch, among others) but didn’t really know what to expect from him by himself, and live. He came out wearing a full bunny costume, head and all and sat down playing the coolest electronic drum pad I’ve ever seen. Some of his past releases have been dreamy pop, others have been heavy as nails. This tape falls somewhere in between. One minute there’s beautiful synthscapes and the next it’s heavy bass and pounding drums. Hand-numbered edition of 79 on purple cassettes with full-color piggie artwork by Bobb Bruno.”

DNT041 – Mudboy/Ducktails – ‘Summer of Saucers’ split CS $6(US)/$16(World)
The Summer of Saucers is here again! Relive the glory daze of a summery psychosis. Same creeped out G.W. Myers artwork, but this time we used a green shell instead of blue, in an edition of 100. Here’s what we said the first time around:Well the summer is coming to an end now and I can’t think of a better way to end it than with this tape, “Summer of Saucers”. The A-Side is Providence’s Raphael Lyon, better known as Mudboy. The side starts off by the lakeside, and you can hear frogs and geese nearby. It slowly builds up with keyboards coming into the picture before fading back to where it started. Lazy day at the river. It is also part one of his “Impossible Duets” series of songs. The flipside is New Jersey’s Matt Mondanile aka Ducktails. Ducktails has been described by someone as “ectoplasmic and cartoonishly cosmic bliss” and with song titles such as “Chill Jam” and “Sun Out My Window” you’ll be apt to agree. Colourful conehead artwork by George W. Myers of Grey Skull/Breaking World Records. In an edition of 100 pro-dubbed blue tapes.
