IF22 – PHILIP CORNER with PHOEBE NEVILLE – ‘CONCERTO FOR HOUSEKEEPER AND OTHER DANCES WITH PHOEBE’ C60 + C102 boxset $15(US)/$30(WORLD)
imagePhilip Corner is an American composer and founding member of the Fluxus movement whose music over the last 50 years has explored the areas of minimalism, chance operations, graphic notation, gamelan and unintentional sound. As a student during the late ‘50s, Corner studied under Henry Cowell and Olivier Messiaen before becoming part of the burgeoning era of post war composers of which John Cage, Richard Maxfield, James Tenney and Malcolm Goldstein would all become close colleagues. Phoebe Neville is an award-winning dancer and choreographer who was an active participant in the New York avant garde community of the ‘60s and ‘70s. She is best known for performing with the Judson Dance Theater as well as for leading her own company. She has since gone onto perform in group and solo performances around the world. For the past two decades she has often collaborated with Corner on performances that incorporate his music set to her dance performances. The raw lo-fi recordings contained within this set have been culled from Corner’s archive and span a period of nearly fifteen years and find the duo performing around the world utilizing a variety of improvisational techniques including resonant metals, feedback loops and incidental sounds. This set comes packaged in a 5” reel to reel box with hand-assembled three panel black and white artwork with calligraphy by Philip Corner. Edition of 150.
