Invisible City

ICR13: Shredderghost – ‘Weaved Regolith’ £4.5
Delaware’s Ian Franklin aka Shredderghost gives us two sides of noisy, introspective home recordings. Superimposed patterns on the internal window. Recorded indoors, at night, in front of a few large windows looking out on to the surrounding city. Objects from the apartment are purposely exposed in the glare of the window, superimposed onto the field of vision from behind. This formed the basis for the conceptual side of the album: exposing the inner feelings and perspectives onto the world around us. Musically, the two pieces were formed by organising ordinary items found around the artist’s immediate area with functionally specific processing equipment. Available as a hand dubbed grey C25 cassette with black and white double sided artwork. Limited to 50 copies worldwide.

DAIS075 Drab Majesty – ‘Careless’ LP
cCurrently the drummer for Los Angeles lo-fi rock ensemble Marriages and having honed an unorthodox home recording style, Deb Demure of DRAB MAJESTY sources his sounds from a repository of “mid-fi” synthesizers and other lesser-quality instruments. Following the release of his debut cassette EP, “UNARIAN DANCES”, he also shared a split 12″ with synth pop forefathers, Eleven Pond. During the Spring of 2015, Drab Majesty signed with Dais Records and released his first single, Unknown to the I, as a introduction for his first initial foray into the album format, romantically titled Careless. Written over the course of two years, “Careless” is a compendium of songs that have outlasted a malicious burglary of his studio, his struggles with substance addiction, and most recently, the death of his beloved grandmother. Dreamy dark shoegaze in the vein of Felt, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Depeche Mode, The Cure.

夕方の犬 (Dog in the Evening) — ‘Oct.16 1964’ CS
In 1963, 100 countries endorsed the Limited Test Ban Treaty to end the threat of radioactive pollution from atmospheric nuclear testing. However, one year later, on October 16, 1964, China started conducting it’s own testing and continued to do so through July 29, 1996. The effects of China’s nuclear testing on human health, animals and the environment are largely unexplored due to the lack of publically available official data. A study carried out by the Japanese physicist Professor Jun Takada suggests that peak levels of radioactivity from China’s large-yield tests exceeded that of the 1986 Chernobyl reactor accident and seriously affected local populations. For Japanese artist 夕方の犬 (Dog in the Evening) this part of history and it’s impact is an important one. He has composed 5 serene tracks corresponding to 5 of the 45 dates that China conducted atmospheric nuclear testing in an effort to bring awareness to these events. This cassette is a limited edition release. Only 100 copies will be available.

Inscriptions, Vol. 3
Inscriptions, Vol. 3 continues Sacred Phrases’ compilation series by pushing the sonic boundaries the label has come to embrace, calling on a few close friends and welcoming a few newcomers to the fold. Old and recent friends (Buchikamashi, Dry Valleys, Geunter Schleinz, LXV, Kyle Landstra, Ekin Fil, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Samantha Glass, and many more) team up with new acquaintances (Son Chainogo Dereva, Demonstration Synthesis, and Karl Fousek) to max-out this set of glossed minimalism, harrowing drone, noirish ambient-folk, refined lo-fi, wide-eyed psychedelic, and flourished modern classical. More than a simple foray into a dreamy aural soiree, Inscriptions, Vol. 3 highlights the most genuinely endearing and challenging artists producing music today. All sounds are exclusive to this compilation.

Inner Islands

II039 Dragontime – ‘Dragontime’ C39
dragontimeReflections of the past and future. Dragontime’s songs can draw lineage with very old traditions, while simultaneously blasting them into the space age. Not all songs draw this line, but across the board there is a new palette and sensibility to a structure that feels very innate. It is a constant evolution from start to finish.

II038 Ki Oni – ‘Elephas’ C47
elephasInspired by a resonance with Sumatran elephants, Ki Oni summons forth lush soundscapes teeming with enough life to resemble their verdant Indonesian home. Each sample is carefully cut, looped, or manipulated to feel at home on this wet, green dancefloor.

Avant!

HORROR VACUI – ‘Return of the Empire’ LP
Bologna (Italy) goth peace-punk 5-piece strikes back! Since 2013 debut In Darkness You Will Feel Alright, the band has been touring both the Old and the New Continent and is now ready to deliver eight new tracks filled with disenchantment, scorn and a proper share of irreverence in leather. So this Return operates on two levels. First of all and most intuitive, being this their second album, it is their own return. Second meaning relates to the current state of asphyxiating climate of restoration in national politics. A few governments fell in the last few years and after a brief time of confusion, a new clean face in a white shirt is leading (but is he actually?) the country. By the looks of facts so far thou, one might be wondering if these government fools have a clue of what they’re doing. Lucky for us, Horror Vacui surely do!European press by Avant! & band’s own imprint Legion Of The Dead. Limited edition of 300 on marbled white wax with silkscreened extra artwork on thick cardboard. Standard edition of 700 on black vinyl. Both come in printed innersleeve featuring lyrics and band pics.

PURE GROUND – ‘Standard of Living’ LP
Standard Of Living, the new LP by Los Angeles’s Pure Ground, finds the duo moving further into the whirring electrical storm only suggested at by their more minimalist previous recordings, creating a soundtrack to a crumbling culture full of provisional one-two rhythms and syncopated bursts of white noise, complimented by grim arpeggiated melodies. Pure Ground have created a niche in the LA hard electronics underground making exclusive use of analog hardware to arrive at their sound, which straddles a fine line between early EBM on tracks like Poison and Second Skin, owing inspiration to Belgium’s Klinik and Front 242, and more melancholy minimal synth on downers In Silence and Tides. The one element that binds the new LP is the undercurrent of experimentalism pervasive in every song, which at times comes to surface on tracks like The Glory Of Absence, which merges the convoluted rhythms of In Phaze era Portion Control with an industrial din and vocal delivery reminiscent of European power electronics groups like Genocide Organ. Lyrical themes focus on the disharmony between the natural, even spiritual, world, with the human dystopia of the post-industrial wastes, and the contradictory sensations of bliss and desperation, ecstasy and fear, bred in this climate. This is music for the end of days. The duo just came back from their second European tour in support of Standard Of Living where they performed alongside vintage electronics masters like Nine Circles, No More and KaS Product. Standard of Living is available in Europe on LP from Avant! Records and in the USA on cassette and LP from Chondritic Sound. CD edition courtesy of Eric Van Wonterghem’s Sleepless Berlin.

Spleen Coffin

Christian Michael Filardo – ‘Impression’ CS $5
SP-38-CS_fa_croppedMinimalist drone compositions from modular synth master and visual artist Christian Michael Filardo. Stark, textural pieces that evolve over side-length explorations of raw analog synthesis. J-cards printed in black on heavy duty black paper with black text on transparent window labels over black cassettes.

HNY – ‘Sacred Fire’ 7″ $6
sp-40-ep_baHeather Nicole Young (formerly of Social Junk) recorded the material on this EP years ago while living in Philadelphia. After a long delay, Spleencoffin is proud to finally bring these vaulted recordings to a proper vinyl release. Fans of Heather’s solo work will not be disappointed: Sacred Fire features characteristic minimal, jagged guitar chords, saturated percussion, and Heather’s distinct voice — all blanketed in controlled feedback sweeps and a generous supply of delay. On the flipside, Ghost is more of an environmental piece, with paired voices (one effected, one bone dry), field-like synth sounds, and a faint low end pulse riding just below the surface. A crucial 7″ addition to HNY’s untarnished discography. Edition of 300 copies printed in silver and black.
