Brannten Schnüre – ‘Sommer Im Pfirschhain’ LP
Brannten Schnüre is an experimental dark folk group out of Würzburg, Germany. Christian Schoppik composed and played all the music, Katie Rich whispers, recites and sings. Together they make astoundingly beautiful folk with a rich instrumentation leaning towards the atonal spectrum. Instrumental wanderings stand alongside Nico-esque poetry tales. Christian plays the accordeon and in some songs guitar and flute. Inspired by hierophants like Nový Svět and David Jackman, solemn song fragments (a lot of old greek rembetiko-recordings) are modified and looped, with additional instruments and voices being integrated later on. His music has been described as “surreal folkcollage” and “german hauntology”. With the emergence of Schoppik’s second project, a dada cabaret called Agnes Beil in 2010, Brannten Schnüre moved closer to the song structures of its frivolous sibling. The songs of Schoppik’s latest creation Sommer im Pfirsichhain are further accompanied by a female singing voice, lending the pieces the voluptuous quality of a stickily tense midsummer. Sommer Im Pfirschhain (Summer In The Peachgrove) is the second part of a quartet of releases. The first being Aprilnacht which got released on Sic Sic Tapes last year. Part three Geträumt hab’ ich vom Martinszug and part four will follow later. Reference points are bands like Winter Family and Twinsistermoon. Music etched on folkloric, ritual elements transferred into the 21th century. Also worth mentioning is the hand-drawn artwork which is made by artist Gwénola Carrère.

Tarotplane – ‘First’ LP
Tarotplane is the solo project of PJ Dorsey from Baltimore MD USA. Over the last few years he has been gradually crafting his debut album, appropriately called First. The end result is a tremendous album etched on the great krautrock & experimental psychedelic records from the 70s. Vintage electronic sounds are mixed with effected guitar parts. It might sound quite familiar at first, but once you enter the heart of the album it all gets spectacularely exhilarating. The true power of this album is how it swirls around and captivates you without any effort. Records such as Franco Battiato’s Pollution, Bill Holt’s Dreamies, Popol Vuh’s Affenstunde and Deuter’s D were strong influences. All of these artists use tape loops, environmental sounds, filtering and other effect processing in an exceptional way. Their desire to create their own distinct sonic world was the driving influence behind this LP. These artists never let the experimentation get in the way of creating something musical, beautiful and sonorous. First integrates those influences but it also has a more traditional psychedelic rock sound built into its sonic viewpoint. PJ took all these diverse influences and blended them together in the most seamless way possible. Something akin to a mix tape. First is a continuous flow from the start to the end. The album was originally going to be called excursions, because he would walk for hours on Baltimore’s waterfront listening to fragments of his playing, as well as samples from films and records to find a balance that worked. The ultimate goal was to make what some would call a head record. Something you could listen to on your own personal excursions that would have a sonic headspace that was distinctive and enjoyable.

Gaye Israel – ‘L’Israel’ C34 $5
gayeisraelpalmtapesHighly recommended debut cassette from Detroit songwriter Chad Silbert. Made using a handful of cheap synths, bass, guitar and a Roland R-70, “L’Israel” is a melodic trip suitable anyplace, anytime. Israel’s self-recorded bedroom pop is full of easy charm, and the songwriting is hooky. On an album generally void of confrontation but instead marked by clean-handed sweetness, Israel’s warning on “Candy:” “don’t you touch my candy,” seems an appropriate protest. The sprawling “Golden Age” is an outstanding track, at home as the theme to a b-movie, teen, beach romp, and while the warm vibes of “Golden Age” seem drawn from some 80s VHS theme, “It’ll Be” is decidedly 90s- Centered by a driving Kim Deal-esque baseline complimenting Israel’s affable vocal. “Life Is A Dream,” on the other hand, feels of 4-track pop psychedelica. Yet, Gaye Israel’s debut is totally cohesive; it’s thoroughly chill, unpretentious and highly fun.

Sunken Road – ‘The Sunken Road EP’ C20 $5
sunkenroadpalmtapesImprov drone session with guitar, violin and shrutti box recorded in Spring 2011 in Ann Arbor, Michigan USA. The tape consists of two pieces, one on each side, performed live in a living room and recorded straight to one mic. It could be described as quite meditative, dreamy and it seems to capture the aura of the railroad tracks near its recoding. The duo displays improvisator skill in this session, never getting too heavy, leaving things in a restrained, textural and most of all hypnotic order. With its slow harmonic language, the sessions noir casted shadow has dabbles of avant-classical or jazz underpinnings, but mostly keeps focus on weaving an ambient, natural drone. Sunken Road was drawing vague inspiration from a scattering of avant influences: free-jazz leanings like Sonny Sharrock and Don Cherry, noise and a range of visual artists.

VISIONIST — ‘Safe’ LP/CD
The South London artist born Louis Carnell broke during a period of experimentation in UK music when, with the disintegration of the dubstep scene, emerging producers began looking to juke and Chicago house for inspiration. A pair of EPs on Lit City Trax (and a collaboration with Fatima Al Qadiri) in 2013 and ’14 introduced Visionist’s minimalist take on fractured R&B and liquid grime, establishing him as a leading voice in new-wave UK soundsystem culture. On ‘Safe’, Visionist sculpts and extends that signature into new terrain and makes his most personal statement yet. Distilling his influences down to a sparse palette of manipulated folk, pop and R&B acapellas, icy synths, and metallic drum samples, he plays off ever-present anxiety and his own battle not to let it overwhelm him. “Comfort, protection, salvation—this is what we search for,” he says. “We are taught that a life of no worries is better for us, and therefore we try to create one that is ‘Safe.'” But while safe as a musical concept implies conformity, ‘Safe’ as an artistic statement is anything but. At a moment when the UK scene, once known for innovation, has settled into rehashing old tropes, Visionist continues to propel his sound into more experimental territory. The album traces the arc of an anxiety attack, from its onset through to recovery. Following the stately discord of brief opener “You Stayed,” the grimy, ballistic assault of “Victim” sends its targets diving into mirrored corners. “I’ve Said” is a brutal, almost militant advance, its sound cutting in and out as though transmitted via shortwave radio. “Too Careful To Care” trades in skittering paranoia, with the soporific “Sleep Luxury” closing out affairs. Since 2012, Visionist has toured extensively throughout Europe, Unites States and Asia, appearing at industry standard clubs and festivals like Fabric, Berghain, Sonar and Unsound and as well as various underground venues. He has scored music for Kenzo, Liam Hodges and Roxanne Farahmand in the world of fashion, and remixed Kelis, Ghost Poet and Glasser. In 2014, he supported FKA Twigs on her first-ever UK tour. The LP was mastered by Jeremy Cox and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, and pressed on 140g LP and CD. It features photography & artwork by Daniel Sannwald and layout by Bill Kouligas.

VOM GRILL — ‘Knerpen! (bevel)’ LP
Antwerp-based nonconformist Dennis Tyfus debuts on PAN under his Vom Grill moniker with the ‘Knerpen! (bevel)’ LP. Tyfus’ dealings in unstable media—spanning paintings and illustrations, films, radio transmissions and more—reflect the freeform, sometimes parodic nature of his sonic output, which has been archived on his own Ultra Eczema imprint alongside many outsider, weirdo and noise underground artists. ‘Knerpen! (bevel)’ is a jarring collage of skewed electronics, tape loops and treated vocals. Opening sequence ‘I’ writhes and seizes with electricity. Skull-resonant clangs are sucked and “scrunched” back into themselves, before throbs of condensed static give way to the sound of someone rummaging around inside the bodies of acoustic instruments. On b-side ‘II,’ Tyfus multitracks the vocalizations of opera singer Emilie Fleamountains into an empyrean choir, before winding back the tape into a foaming-at-the-mouth mechanical meltdown. The album is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, pressed on 140g LP. It features photography by Dennis Tyfus and layout by Bill Kouligas.

LEE GAMBLE — ‘B23 Steelhouse/Motor System (Extension)’ 12″
Limited pressing / white label featuring two unreleased tracks. ‘B23 Steelhouse’ is a rework of ‘Steelhouse Chaconne’, itself an unreleased Lee Gamble dub from 2013. On the flip is ‘Motor System’, a track taken from last year’s Koch album and extended. Both tracks have been remastered and sound much louder and dynamic than the album cuts – primed for the DJs.

SHAPES C40 5€
Shapes is Niklas Dommaschk’s ( Phantom Horse ) nom de plume for his solo-synthesizer excursions – and it’s a fitting name. Without lacking coherence the music’s shape-shifting throughout the tape’s 38 minutes duration. From TD like ambient soundscapes to a more rhythmic approach a la Harmonia or the dark soundtracks of John Carpenter: the music’s aware of its electronic ancestors without being just a pastiche of already historic ideas of sound. This is contemporary electronic music, turn off the audio on your TV while watching everyday’s horrific news about crisies worldwide and listen to this music instead: you’ll notice how the music’s reflecting the bleak reality. But there’s a liquid quality to the electronic compositions, too – a fluid and resilient quality: Shape shifting music against more and more rigid politics. Limited to 103 copies. 70 black covers. 33 red covers (this version also contains the regular black cover). Silver print on tapes. Foldout-cover is riso-printed by ChaCha & Tantra.
