MRS. MAGICIAN’S – ‘B SIDES’ LP
We’re pleased to announce the release of Mrs. Magician’s appropriately titled album, B-Sides. The album is a collection of, you guessed it, B-sides recorded throughout the entirety of Mrs Magician’s lifespan and is now available nationwide via drummer Cory Stier’s label, Thrill Me Records. B-Sides is a follow up to the debut critically acclaimed full-length Strange Heaven (produced by John Reis- Hot Snakes, Rocket From The Crypt, The Night Marchers), which was released via Swami Records. “I’m excited these songs are coming out on a physical release, in true Mrs Magician fashion,” frontman Jacob Turnbloom comments. ” It’s honest and self deprecating, everything I love about real pop-punk. It shows where Tommy Garcia (guitar) & I were when we started this band. It’s a documentation of our friendship turned eventually into a band. It shows our growth as song writers and producers. I’m proud of the record no matter how imperfect it may seem, it’s real and the lyrics reflect that.” Complete with 17 tracks, the record is full of the witty, gloomy narratives Mrs. Magician is known for all the while blending together the “la,la, la’s” and the choir boy harmonies, creating a perfect juxtaposition.

Blackest Rainbow

Bong – ‘Idle Days On The Yann’ LP £14
New slab of wax from Newcastle’s premium blazers Bong. Idle Days On The Yann follows on from their untitled Record Store Day LP we released earlier this year, and this new 40 minute beast has the enhanced and perhaps unexpected addition of vocals from Holly Forster. Holly’s zoned out vocals mirrors the lumbering psych doom vibe that this quartet have built over the last 6 years. Killer artwork by Lucy Johnson as with their release on MIE Music. The LP is pressed in an edition of 700 copies. 350 copies pressed on gold and black swirl 180 gram vinyl, and 350 on black 180 gram vinyl. Includes download of the album.

MIKE GANGLOFF – ‘Poplar Hollow’ LP £14
Black Twig Picker and Pelt member Mike Gangloff self released the fantastic Poplar Hollow in an edition of only 200 copies earlier this year, and upon seeing it sneak out we instantly got excited to hear it with the potential for a vinyl edition. And hell, what we heard we loved, and are real pleased to drop it on glorious vinyl for the masses! Poplar Hollow perfectly blends his other projects together, merging experimental sounds with traditional American folk and roots music. Comprising of Mike performing vocal/banjo/violin duties, he brings a new eclectic and at times psychedelic vibe to much of this record. Poplar Hollow is a record unlike any I have heard recently, Gangloff is a truly individual force in the American scene, and this record further cements that status. Pressed in an edition of 500 copies, 250 on 180 gram red and green swirl vinyl, and 250 copies on 180 gram black vinyl. Includes download of the album. Packaged in a sleeve featuring the inimitable eye popping art of Jake Blanchard.

STRAPPING FIELDHANDS – ‘Impossible to Say b/w Sitting On Her Whiskers’
Back in the rough n’ tumble days (& nights) of the 1990’s, you’d be hard pressed to find a single slobbering indie-rock drunkard who wasn’t a Fieldhands fan. From the tremendous early Siltbreeze singles to the magnificent Omphalos full-lengths, the galaxy and beyond were charmed by their wayward off-kilter pre/post-skiffle, pre/post-psychedelic, and pre/post-punk avant pop. Bob Malloy crafted swaying bizarre stories & fables in a fake British accent as convincing as a perfectly fitting Toupée. But aside from 2002’s unsung and virtually unheard Third Kingdom, all has been seemingly quiet in Fieldhands land. But aha! They’ve only been slumbering, laying in wait writing and recording. Which brings us here. Two brand new songs. One is a lively and scrappy, yet wistful anthem, perfect for hoisting a pint with the lads. The other is a tender Ray Davies-ian ballad about a bearded lady. Hey, you’re the one who asked! We are pleased to present them in an edition of 350 copies, including a measly 75 in the hand-colored Hesske edition available only from the band or from Richie Records // TestosterTunes. These were somewhat lovingly fucked-with by various employees & hangers-on at the Philadelphia Record Exchange over the course of a few beer-soaked sessions. When they’re gone, they’re gone man.

I Had An Accident

k-the-i???/Walter Gross split C40 $6
ktheiwgsmallWith The Promise Of Automation, k-the-i??? and Walter Gross came together in 2005 as Youth:Kill. With Walter laying down beats and Kiki on the mic, the two created something that may have been beyond its time. The Blueprint Of A Paper Airplane / Like Dust brings the two back 3-4 years later, but unlike the Youth:Kill collaboration, k-the-??? and Walter Gross showcase 20 minutes of solo material. These past years certainly showed growth and development from both artists. K-the-i??? displays 5 instrumental tracks. Walter Gross constructs one ambient track. While k-the-i??? produces heavy beat driven notes with that slight jazz influence going on, be it slight, it carries its own weight with a nostalgic slang. The drumming sequence is stunning. The softness of the tones and the samples used create an airy loftiness that rolls well in its rhythm. Walter Gross on the other hand is much darker, for real tho. The sample of a phone call from Baltimore jail is haunting and eerie. It changes the tone of the album. Gross utilizes time as an instrument and moments as a bridge. Imagine the mantra of meditation from the cell. Lost in the thoughts of the past. Limited to 150 gold cassettes.

Psychopop – ’13’ C13 $6
13smallFrom the moment this album starts you are brought in and your dreams are sucked out. Like a 70s b-movie soundtrack you found in your father’s underwear drawer you checked out for the brief nipple shots. 13 is a 13 minute beat tape and the latest work from producer Psychopop. Known for his work with some legendary San Diego artists, 13 displays the true talent of Psychopop as a solo artist. 13 minutes becomes a tease that suspends reality and converts into a thought or trembling worry that never goes away, it rests in the back of your mind and over and over again you feel it. While you are baking cookies with your son or sexing around with your lover, these beats have crept up inside you and infected your soul. An absolute thrill. Limited to 100 “nicotine stained” cassettes.

Heart Heart Julia – ‘Whisper My Name’ C41 $6
hhjwhispersmallSpending two years to record, and following similar patterns and methods to the 2009 Love and Be Judge album, Whisper My Name marks the bands continued presence into the abyss. With sounds that are hard to identify coupled with sparse dulcimer recordings and guitar plucking, the album takes a tone of sullen hollowness. Justin allows his voice to be heard at the beginning and end of the album, offering partially original lyrics and the distinct humming reminscent of The Astorians. The overall feel in this album is nostalgic in nature. Recalling heart break and understanding the concept of getting over it to understand what the future holds, Whisper My Name is deeply experimental and revealing. Atmospheric calmness spans the tape from the coolness of George Dutton. The turmoil of chaos calmed emotionally. Limited to 23 cassettes.

Gnar Tapes

BOOM! – ‘Get a Grip’
The brand new album by Portland’s best kept secret! BOOM! is the brainchild of Izak Arida (also of beloved stoner pop boy band The Memories) and Chris Scott (also of legendary surf party renegades Guantanamo Baywatch), two childhood friends who moved together to Portland, OR from the burnt out badlands of SoCal’s Inland Empire. Pop punk has long been used for foul deeds but BOOM! is here to bring the party back. If you’ve ever crashed a house party, bombed a hill on a skateboard, shotgunned a beer on a porch, made out with a stranger in a van, woke up in a front lawn, crowd surfed at a basement show, puked on the floor, laughed til you cried, or if you love it when the punk POPS then this tape is your new best friend. Split realease with Burger Records!

LOVE COP – ‘2 True/2 Real’
Prolific lo-fi pop princes, Love Cop, return with their third album of 2013 and it’s their best, clearest, and most sinister release to date. After two prior high selling tapes for Gnar, “2 True / 2 Real” has been released by the esteemed Burger Records and contains hit after hit after hit of burner-boy love pop. Love Cop is a duo from the shadowy warehouse rows of the Central Eastside Industrial District of Portland, OR. Born and raised in New York, then relocated to the Northwest, Duffy Rongiiland and Phil Salina are creating some of the best stoner goth, beat-brat, dark pop happening now. Like a beautiful mutt child of Beat Happening, Television Personalities, and The Jesus and Mary Chain albums, Love Cop’s newest swooner, “2 True / 2 Real”, is a bedroom pop masterpiece of dark and romantic intentions. Toning down on the cheeky and manic themes of their prior releases and dialing down the distortion for a more open-hearted and focused set of headphone-pop love songs, Love Cop prove on this one that they are as diverse as they are determined. This is for all the dark ones out there getting dreamy this Summer.

KEEL HER – ‘Keel Her’
The undisputed “UK pop princess” of the current home-fi experimental pop stratosphere returns to Gnar Tapes with an undeniable new tape of swoon-worthy stoner-pop candy. Sweet and subdued with a mega chilled out aura, this is some of the best, best, BEST pop Rose has committed to cassette. Like friends and contemporaries Ariel Pink, Emotional and Free Weed, Keel Her has been constantly releasing a consistently developing string of home-recorded pop that just seems to get better with each and every release. She also shares a kinship with friend and former mentor R. Stevie Moore in that she has a rare and unique mind seemingly made for pop experimentation, as well as a sly sense of humor and free spirited attitude towards the carefree. Easily one of the brightest stars in the modern lo-fi pop constellation and a blessing to all cassette lovers on Earth. And beyond.

LST-49 Lê Almeida – ‘Pré Ambulatório’ CS $5
Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Guided By Voices. These are bands that Lê Almeida takes inspiration from. His band name may be the same as his own name but this isn’t a stripped down solo project. Lê Almeida, from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, creates catchy, buzzsaw indie rock jams, tempered with laid back vocals all in Portugese. In addition to being the chief songwriter for this group, Lê Almeida also runs the fantastic and important Transfusão Noise Records. He seems to have his hand in all the great indie rock albums coming out of Brazil. Pré Ambulatório is a 9 song EP with 2 bonus tracks on the cassette tape version. Highly recommended.

SM-01: Techno Lincoln and the Technicolor Union – ‘Star In: The Greatest Hits!’ C25/CDr
Iowa City’s premiere foon-rock band (“Foon” being their off-brand version of “fun”), this multimedia extravaganza had a revolving cast, elements of theatre and Bohemia, sludge, a love of badass hats, and some glorious pop goodness. They (we? I guess?) played their last show at Shane and Julia’s wedding before they moved to Washington. The CDR has 8 sweet songs recorded in our drummer’s basement + 7 bonus live jams, cassette has only 1 bonus track but the bandcamp download it comes with has all 7 bonus tracks + an extra special bonus song only available from the bandcamp bonus section! Yippee!

SM-02 All Dogs Invited – ‘Mammals Amongst Us’ C25/CDr
All Dogs Invited play some super dreamy rock’n’roll mewzick, this 4-song EP is a pretty slick introduction to this small-town group. Their drummer is in Paraguay for a year, but they managed to also record a soon-forthcoming 2nd full length before she took off. Tape comes with free download as always, and recorded by Ian Williams, who seems to record a lot of awesome Iowa acts in his new Des Moines studio.

SM-03 Maude Flanders – ‘Puvvy Puzzy’ C30/CDr
HEAVY – 5 dudes, including two drumsets and Curt Oren blasting away on his baritone sax. TRIBAL BLASTS MAN, I dunno, I reallllly dig this stuff, got to see em twice in 2012 before the break-up. Good shit, and hey, it’s a free download on the bandcamps already anyway. Also recorded by Ian Williams, yo.
