MATS GUSTAFSSON – ‘PIANO MATING’ LP
They sound like two holes puncturing the fabric of reality – holes that disobey time and space; black holes then, where you can poke your head through and see what is really going on behind the curtain. The two side-long pieces of Piano Mating by Mats Gustafsson are incredibly pure, simple-sounding and slowly-ascending drones that feel convincingly like tractor beams for the soul. Is this spiritual music for heathens? It happened because we asked Mats to compose an album using an instrument he’d never recorded with before. He came back with one of the most bizarre pieces of kit ever – the Dubreq Pianomate. A deliciously odd device from the manufacturers of the Stylophone, which turns your nan’s living room piano into, well, a giant Stylophone! Mats doesn’t hook his up to a piano though. Instead he manipulates the machine on its own to wring out these strange, expressive sonic prayers. “‘Microtonal electronic maracas is perhaps an apt description? Ha ha!” Mats laughs of the unique sound of his Pianomate. “It is just a totally different beast compared to anything else I ever played. “The Piano Mate does whatever it wants really. But I can control pitch and volume and detune it while playing. The microtonal clusters that it offers are highly inspirational to work with and really something that is quite hard to achieve on the saxophones. “And I just love the sound of it. That color really kicks my mind and ass.” Compositionally, Mats let the unique restrictions and limited tonal palette of the Pianomate guide him, rather than him attempt to bend the unwieldy instrument to his will. “Making this music was a lot about creating a specific state of mind. Letting the music take over,” he explains. “Letting the sounds create the music. Slow. Listening for it and going for it. Never pushing it. Hard to describe, actually. And of course, part of the mystery of it all.” Although he admits he rarely listens back to his recordings once he’s finished with them, Mats says that Piano Mating has brought something new and indefinable to his iconoclastic music: “I really hear very different things every time I listen back to these recordings. I found them still very surprising and, funnily enough, very inspirational to me. In my sax playing, I get a lot of inspiration from listening to the piano mate. “I love my Piano Mate! – there should be one in every household!!!”

BLUE EIGHTEEN – ‘CHEMIEFASERWERK’ C40
Following a couple of years of kind-of glib attempts at straplines for the Blue Tapes brand – ‘Just another cultural filtration system’, ‘Fraudulent pop’, ‘Future-proofing music by making it plastic’ etc. – we finally alighted on one that was kind of truthful: Secular drones & spiritual pop. These are the hemispheres of the musical component of the Blue Tapes art project. While the spiritual pop could describe the ecstatic, playful messes of Katie Gately, Henry Plotnick and Laurent Chambert, secular drones could meanwhile be found in the stripped-back-to-the-raw-nerves sounds of Mats Gustafsson, Father Murphy and The Fractal Skulls. Sometimes, such as on The Blue Tapes House Band: vol. 1, the two hemispheres converge. Sometimes blissfully, sometimes not. blue eighteen: Chemiefaserwerk taps into this mini-tradition of secular drones that we’ve curated. The two pieces on this cassette are the end-product of mad scientist experiments with tape manipulations that could rival the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, if the Workshop had never attempted theme tunes, and just churned out those psyche-scrambling incidental sound cues for early Doctor Who episodes. It is not to be listened to lightly. The component frequencies of these recordings are crackles, bumps, feedback and other tape-sourced errata, all building up to mind-cell-piercing drones. It isn’t aggressive, though. We’re not a noise label. Instead these compositions resemble hymns for alien artefacts – cold and full of weather and secrets. The effect is communicative and reverent, if not especially in thrall to human concerns such as emotion or empathy. This tape bristles with aural information; coded mantras from the days when data was magnetic and not binary.

Spleen Coffin

Comfort Link – ‘The celestial music of Comfort Link’ CS $5
sp-39-csjpComfort Link’s third full length cassette for sPLeeNCoFFiN explores slow-moving compositions of layered tape loops, deteriorating mechanical tape echoes, found sounds and spontaneous tape collage for an album full of density and texture with hiss-laden traces of lost melody. Covers and cassette labels are hand-made from 1920s letterpress celestial diagrams with typewriter text. Opaque red cassettes, edition of 50 copies.

Inca Eyeball – ‘Barry White Comes’ LP $12
sp-41-lp_frontaVeterans of the UK lo-fi underground Inca Eyeball present their first new LP since 1999. The duo of Phil Todd (Ashtray Navigations, Dogliveroil) and Joincey (Wagstaff, Coits) released tons of classic cassettes in the 1990s on labels such as EF Tapes, Fusetron, Union Pole, Giardia, and Todd’s own Betley Welcomes Careful Drivers imprint, in addition to a handful of vinyl releases and an unforgettable 99 track CD released on Spirit of Orr. Notorious for their incredibly short “songs” (typically 2-30 seconds of improvised instrumentation on cheap and broken instruments over bizarre decontextualized rants) with verbose and frequently idiotic titles, the duo quickly garnered a following within the experimental tape underground of the 1990s. Pretend there was no 1999-2014 and enjoy this new LP featuring 83 tracks (all individually banded) of classic, poorly recorded Inca ineptitude.

Phase!

PLEX-1 | FEEL ALRIGHT – ‘Hahahahahaha’ 1-sided LP
plex-1-feel-alright“First time on vinyl, Tonal Plexus breaks its cherry with an essential, instant-classic, soulful re-issue: Feel Alright’s debut album (previously released on cassette format only). Black 140 gr vinyl, limited edition of 250 copies. Housed in an offset printed jacket on 350 gsm cardstock with 29x29cm double-sided insert. Feel Alright from Calgary, Canada is the singer/songwriter solo moniker of Craig Elliott Fahner. The eight songs that appear in the original version of “Hahahahahaha” carry a neo-psychedelic, garage pop texture and with witty, ultra-catchy songwriting abilities and skillful/soulful performance, they truly place this album at the No.1 spot of the genre. It’s like the quintessence of pop lyricism, which hits bull’s-eye to the heart of the listener. It’s like the record you fall in love with within the first couple of seconds. It’s like past and future blend with present and make you feel eternal. It’s like the best album any Oh See never wrote. Just listen to it and reading this will be unnecessary.

PHR-125 | Bedroom Solitary Vol.1: KASTEL – ’39’ 1-Sided LP
phr-125kastel39Phase! is proud to present a series of one-sided LPs, called “Bedroom Solitary”. After 13 years of releasing recordings on a pretty wide range of musical styles, Phase! focuses on the style that intrigues it the most: Bedroom experimentation. The plot is simple. Home-made recordings (lo-fi is not mandatory here) by a single person at his bedroom on a 12” side-length representation. Each volume will be strictly limited and hand-numbered to 99 copies in an offset printed custom hand-cut jacket. “39” by Silvia Kastel is a numb-feel exploration on isolation and singularity through space and darkness. Neuter beats, crawling vibratos, synesthetic repetitions and robotic ambiances form a two-piece electronic work, hymn to the loneliness of the (artistic) existence. The title track features synthetic chatter on Dylan Thomas’ “Poem 39” while its accompaniment, “Subtract”, flirts with disorientation through distortion and low sparse kicks. Edition of 99 copies in offset printed custom hand-cut wrap-around jackets on top of black disco bags.

PHR-126 | RIEN VIRGULE – ‘Trente Jours à Grande Échelle’ LP
phr-126rienvirguleDebut album by the French 4-piece Rien Virgule (members are Mathias Pontévia, Jean-Marc Reilla, Anne Careil and Manuel Duval [also of France Sauvage / La République des Granges fame]) where they deliver 6 strict, desolate, stomp pumping, cold modular-wave pieces with doses of synth-punk and electro-acoustic terror. Deranged female vocals, analog keyboard mayhem and spacious ambiance form a setting for deep subconscious nightmare plays. Put on your costumes and join the troupe. Edition of 500 copies in pro-printed full color jackets. Co-released with Animal Biscuit, La République des Granges, Attila Tralala, Perma Frost, Micr0lab & Do it Youssef.

PHR-127 | WHAM JAH – ‘Lean On’ CDr
phr127wj-leanon“Lean On” depicts a recent twist in WJ’s sound, a take in more found-sound, electroacoustic uneasy pop via a laid-out mayhem of severe atmosphere. Lean on your nightmares. Edition of 60 copies w/ paste-on artwork on stamped/spraypainted covers.

No Part of It

WILT – ‘Nocturnal Requiem’
100wiltFRONTWILT is James Keeler’s main project since the late 90s, and
Wisconsin’s best kept secret as far as I’m concerned. The feeling of rural desolation just oozes from these tracks, which maintain or expand on an industrial infused dark ambient sound nicely. There is a sense of brooding, but nothing beyond the residue of anything like a dirge exists. Masterful reverb, factory engines in the distance. Crumbling layers of synth loops being thrown off of a cliff, metallic swamp clang, utter dread and resignation. Keeler’s particular take on imaginary horror soundtracks comes off like he’s able to walk into an abandoned mental hospital and put all of the essence into a jar without any unnecessary bells and whistles…. or accoutrements of any kind. For those who notice the difference, this work stands alone. There are definitely a lot of vintage synths somewhere in here, but “80s synth soundtrack” would be too lazy of a tag to place. Lots of little elements comprise a sound where no particular texture is too prominent. It’s hard to tell what is a synth and what is processed field recordings of strange insects. The whole album though, could easily fit into those moments of epiphany in a horror movie, where the group of naive and sex-crazed teen day campers/life guards, in their tent in the middle of the night, realize by lantern light that they’re trapped with something much stronger than them, and it’s something they can’t know or see, much less escape from… Moments before the axe comes down. It’s hard to explain. There is an unspoken complexity in this artist’s body of work. With Keeler’s own “Institute for Organic Conversations” label, he’s worked with subject matter expanding upon Buckminster Fuller and Lovecraftian ideas, while others are still rehashing the same emotionally stunted, serial killer bullshit.

Illusion of Safety – ‘Surrender’
SURRENDER CDR COVER HERO arvo100Illusion of Safety (1983-2014), just passing its 30th year since inception, is often regarded as the innovator of “ambient industrial”. Despite having traversed nearly every arena of the experimental milieu, performed prestigious fests all over the world, and collaborated with some of widest ranging and heaviest hitting of the avante garde, core member/founder Daniel Burke has both shown a return to form and a veritable bouquet of new frontiers in his most recent outing, “Surrender”. In just under 60 minutes, the listener is taken on a dizzying carousel ride where everything but the kitchen sink is employed to weave a deeply personal (abstract, wordless) narrative that comes off as minimalistic, condensed, and bombastic. But at the same time, it is a constantly shifting, complex and ornate grid iron amalgam of genuine enthusiasm and horror. Recommended if you like a complete disregard for the myopic trappings and short sighted formulae of contemporary sound art today. This may be the final release of Illusion of Safety material.
