Cadaver in Drag – ‘Breaking and Entering’ [Review]

cadaver_zps5d282225Doubly lost and found: yet another causality, cycling endlessly in the tape machine, only escaping months later to the reviewer’s consideration.  ‘Breaking and Entering’, the “lost tape” by Cadaver in Drag, is a five song collection of the band’s handsome roadhouse-noise dichotomy, made immortal by the post-historical sound of a five-person “band,” and resembling little of a tape which should have or could have been lost. That is, it’s quite good. The thing begins with, is consumed by “Taking a Ride,” a long-form groove in the vein of Religious Knives, or even Moon Duo or Wooden Shjips for its tightly-locked psychedelic grit.  Lulled by this narco treatment, the good vibes are broken by the sludge of “Buy a Gun” where bass and horn conspire over skronky noodles and flagging vocals, the whole thing seemingly duct-taped to the hi-hat and used to club us over the head again and again. The trick is all the more gnarly because we knew it would happen but went along anyhow. On side two, “Died in His Sleep/Lived in His Nightmares” rights a massive swell of bass growl in an airless soundscape – the self-same sonic effect bundled in much classier packages in the middle years of Peasant Magick, which these 2009 recordings were concurrent with – masking the band while retaining the sense of activity these many hands lay-on to these recordings.  That is, except for the one-track mind of “Fuck the Royal Treatment,” a looping, loping bit of whisky-queasy which sits best among the solo work of Josh Lay and the majority releases on (his label) Husk.  But this solo sounding track melts entirely away before the living brutality of “Taking a Ride 2,” a powerful thrash and bash familiar to Clockcleaner, less a sequel and more a coda to the massive opening track and namesake.  On pro-pressed tapes, in glossy J-cards. 100 copies. Highly recommended.

Invisible Path – ‘Cloud Variations’; and The Ether Staircase – ‘Winning the Olympics’ [Review]

ip_tapesMichael Bailey’s Invisible Path provide some of the most thoughtful compositions to the young ((Cave)) catalog with the ‘Cloud Variations’ C39.  Providing the service role left vacant by Roy Tatum’s Changeling, Bailey’s winding ambients reset the latest frame of noise on one hand (and it’s telling that I’m at a loss to recall the latest representatives, and not because they don’t exist), and drone on the other (countless “new agers” who came and went, leaving a lost generation to figure out what was meant to “go here”).  Now only the software has changed, raising the glossy, high-def stakes for all involved.  In the style of William Basinski, the two, sidelong couplets trade in divine tones while struggling with melodic consciousness.  Harmonics abound, turning many utterances of a melody into one big run-on of bleary warm hum and long rhythmic cycles, equally imposed upon by the mash.  Yet beyond this competent, considered core what elevates the album is the ornamentation of guitar harmonics, gongs, and string sounds which do not disturb the essence of weightlessness, but which stand this tonal miasma against the percolating relief of formal characters, as seemingly oblivious to the music being made, a psychoanalytical sketch about divergence and co-evolutions of thought which do more than just sound good, but do beg an audience and interlocutor in the most passive of ways. With art by Bailey on heavy J-cards.  Recommended.

ether_olympics_tapes((Cave))’s own Rob and Ben form The Ether Staircase, whose murky, paranoid ‘Winning the Olympics’ pushes in directions of pataphysics with the same skill as Bailey pushes in the dimension of elegance.  Across four or nine tracks titled more like inside jokes than any sort of interpretive legend, the boys build on low-tempo synthesizer horror like so many Carpenter apes in the last 5 years, but do so with an artful tact much like UW Owl and the other homebrews from the hibernative Phaserprone; though largely low in fidelity, the pair play with this aesthetic essence as well, punctuating the sonic fabric with bright, rendered shapes, surgical edits, and a sourcing practice which belies the dingy sheen which sits atop the signal.  The tape opens and closes with an anti-dub sound (steady beats, whistles, shifters) which should be allowed to define the project, and help it crystallize much as early Sun Araw wobbled its way into the singular figure we find today. Art by Rob on heavy J-cards. Recommended.

SP#024 Félicia Atkinson – ‘With Her Own Hands’ €20/£26/$17
SP024-preview« Let’s say it’s a narrative drift, the last whisper of an Ophelia lost in the shore, some sounds escaping from a broken window, a « vague a l’ame » caught in the syphon, some breads unknotted by mistake. You know, a one side vinyl is a kind of second- handed moon, shining in the dust of thrift store, belonging to a suburban galaxy: you might need to hitch hike and lose you left shoe to travel in time. 18 mn or so, it’s a walk from home until the bridge, 9 subways stations, 25 kisses, an apple crumble baking in the oven, a summer nap, 3 extra minutes before being tired of waiting. It’s a gem, a glass eye, a melting ice cube, a lost tooth, a traveling secret, a kind of chanting ring. » Félicia Atkinson, september 2013. MARGINAL CONSORT – ‘INSTAL. Glasgow 2008’ 4LP
panact_PAN25si03Marginal Consort is a Japanese avant-garde improvisational collective made of sound and visual artists, who were all students of Takehisa Kosugi at the radical Bigaku school of aesthetics in Tokyo in the 70’s. The group is a reformation of the East Bionic Symphonia, who released an incredible long-form drone record in the early 80’s, a large improvisation ensemble in the spirit of his Kosugi’s Group Ongaku and Taj Mahal Travellers projects. Marginal Consort is formed around musicians, Kazuo Imai, (a student of Japanese Free Jazz linchpin Masayuki Takayanagi and also member of both Taj Mahal Travellers and Takayanagi’s New Direction Unit), Tomonao Koshikawa, Kei Shii, and sound-artist Masami Tada (also in group GAP). Their extended set explores forms of sound and ways of playing that never coalesce into music, but create a group dynamic of ebb and flow, of exploration and fluidity. Marginal Consort also featured previously artists Yasushi Ozawa, bassist in Keiji Haino’s Fushitsusha, and Chie Mukai, from dreamy psychedelic group Che-Shizu. With this cast on board, they took their free improvisation to the streets to create drones and percussive interplay in urban communal harmony. “A form of sound that does not turn into music and a group that does not produce harmony; individual concepts and group fluidity; individuals who are at once independent entities and components of the whole; coexisting time frames and intersecting rhythms – these are among the images of group improvisation that have occupied my mind since the ’70s. These images neither presuppose specific elements nor regulate the entire process. There always remain, however, the fundamental premises that sounds are separately produced phenomena and that their accumulation forms the whole”. – Kazuo Imai The boxset is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M. It is pressed on 4x 140g vinyls which themselves are housed in a silk screened pvc sleeve. It features liner notes by Barry Esson, extended photo documentation by Bryony McIntyre and artwork by Bill Kouligas.

MAD/MOD – ‘Neurinomes’ CDr $10
Mad-Mod-Edition2-anpsiPro-duped thermal -printed CD-R. Hand assembled cardboard folders. Numbered edition (second limited run of 25). 79 mins. $10. Shimmering drones and angular melody lines dance and collapse against hazy ambiance and fractured glass surfaces; ecstatic meditations give way to deep noir melancholy and fiery avant expressionism. Neurinomes (a type of nerve tumor that can affect the inner ear) is the haunting debut by the duo of Montreal-based reed player Marc-Antoine Dagenais (Mad) and guitarist Dominic Marion (Mod). The album revolves around improvisation, rewriting of improvised sounds, resonant mappings, organic acousmatic, combination tones; a process one may call recomposition, using recordings of spontaneous interactions as draft mapping, free to be reinvestigated and refined. All timbers were produced solely by miking acoustic sources. With the exception of a wine glass slowed down to a low drone, these soundscapes remain faithful to original acoustic production. The duo has developed their own vocabulary through research of improvised music based on harmonic specters, thoroughly experimenting in the fields of peculiar textures and frictions that their instruments can provide. Marion often, but not always, treats his guitar signal through a certain range of effects, working a specter of textures, going from delicate jazzy chords to screaming organ like sounds. Blending with those amplified sounds, Dagenais uses different extended techniques (trumpet sounds, multiphonics, screams, circular breathing and others) on the saxophone and flutes as well as different parts of the instruments to produce unusual soundscapes.
