Lost Sound Tapes

LST-56 DOGBRETH – ‘SENTIMENTAL HEALTH’ CS
Tristan Jemsek and company from Phoenix, AZ are back with their second full length. Positive pop punk with good messages. Stick close to your friends and sing along. This one will help you get through the winter. Listen to a little bit of Arizona and envoke the desert during the cold months. It was even recorded in the summer, at audioconfusion just like the first Dogbreth album, “Chookie”. Longtime member of Dogbreth, Erin Caldwell, gets main vocal duty on track “How Long” and it sounds great! LP coming out in Dec on Plan-It-X Records. Cassette tape comes with digital download code and specially formatted-for-cassette artwork.

LST-57 WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS – ‘WHEN YOU MOVE’ CS
What can I say about Rebecca Redman that I haven’t already said? If you ask her, I think she would call this the second “official” Watercolor Paintings album, the first was “Open Your Mouth”. This album takes a distinct step towards a darker motif compared to previous folk/pop releases. This is one of the first documents of a mostly Hoshwa-less Watercolor Paintings since he began playing regularly with his sister Rebecca. Look forward to the heavy droner “Showers Of Stones” though there are plenty of tunes on here that are culled from previous cassette or CDR releases that have been reinvogorated with a new backing band and excellent mid-fi recording fidelity. LP coming out in Dec on Plan-It-X Records. Cassette tape comes with digital download code and specially formatted-for-cassette artwork.

LST-58 PARASOL – ‘NOT THERE’ CS
Inspiring punk rock/anarcho pop from the east side, Boston, MA. 3-piece critical buzzsaw with hooks galore. Sounds dangerous. It IS dangerous. Lily’s guitar leads inspire me to wanna shred. This is disarming music that might make you realize you’ve been trying to tear down the system all along by bolstering your community and lending a hand to your neighbors. This is their first full length album and we’re unbelieveably excited to share it with the world! LP coming out in January 2013 from Square Of Opposition, Nervous Nelly, and Lauren Records. Cassette tape comes with digital download code and specifically formatted-for-cassette artwork.

LST-55 SHAWN MRAZEK LIVES! – ‘THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD’ CS
Debut album from Shawn Mrazek Lives!, “Thought He Was Dead”, is now on cassette tape following an extremely limited self-released LP edition. Shawn has played in a lot of Canadian indie rock bands, including being the current drummer in Nardwuar’s band The Evaporators, but this is his first time taking the lead and writing the songs. This is radically positive rock and roll music from some of the greatest musicians and people in Vancouver, BC. The general theme of the mini-album is that there’s shit you can’t control in this world, so let’s just try and stay positive. Shawn Mrazek says “if you feel like crap, this record is for you!!” Edition of 100 white cassette tapes with hand stamped, natural, kraft paper labels. Comes with digital download code.

Five Star Hotel – ‘The Disconnect’ CS $5
TIN015This release shows Michigan-based producer Five Star Hotel refining the sound we saw him establish earlier this year on “Surface.” Refining on that album’s abrasive, industrial noise, “The Disconnect” retains those elements but shifts the focus towards dance-floor beats and harsh melodies that float to the surface. Genre: Noise/Electronic

General Translator – ‘Contemporary’ CS $4
TIN014Artist statement: “how much context can you really give to a doctored loop of a jazz instrumental? truly guys, we are sample curators at best. we put into practice the art of commodifying art…[taking] “music” and returning it to its most primordial state, ‘sound’.” Genre: electronic/vaporwave/ambient

GOD 18 Peter Ablinger – ‘Regenstücke Vol. 2’ LP
god18.1e25c59Since Regenstücke Vol. 1 deals with rain aesthetic in pure instrumental form, Vol. 2 shows Peter Ablinger´s fascination with techniques of filed recordings, accompanied by different ensembles and orchestra setups. Ablinger has been exploring different sides and features of nature recordings for a very long time, always achieving new territories and pushing boundaries to higher level. This release represents only a minority of that output. City noise, landscape sounds, rain drops, boosted with powerful instrumentation – simple and almost manifestly. Not forgetting “instrumental raining”, Membrane, Regen, as a part of his cycle Weiss/Weisslich, shows concert version of the piece for eight glass tubes – just like hearing eight church bells surrounding your brain…

Notice Recordings

Notice #25 Talk West – ‘Canyon Lip’
NTR025_Scan_forum_cover_only_120xNotice was immediately taken by this release from Talk West, the project of Dylan Aycock of Tulsa’s Scissor Tail Records. On Canyon Lip, he works primarily with lush pedal steel and steely synthesizers to craft drones with a remarkably physical presence. On “Finally, That River Twists,” which makes up Side A, rich and airy pedal steel loops unfold alongside light percussion touches. Side B’s “With No Regrets” introduces more tension, playing on a deep sense of struggle buried in its title. Solitude prevails against subtle intrusions of percussion that hint at missed connections, like cars passing one another on a rural road at dusk. Through minimal means, Canyon Lip achieves a visceral sense of time, evoking the imperceptible movement of the sun, barely noticed until the gloaming.

Notice #26 Seth Cluett – ‘wound of this deep blue.’
NTR026_Scan_forum_cover_only_120xThe multifaceted work of composer Seth Cluett has garnered wide praise for, among other things, its attention to detail and organic sense of order. Cluett often explores sound in its ability to create or construct a listener’s sense of place, memory and time, using such sonic detail to wring the specific and personal out of the abstract. At the same time, on wound of this deep blue., Cluett limits his own control over this process: he mixes seven tapes recorded on a cassette dictaphone from live performances between 2005 and 2013, but without adding any other processing or edits. Within this framework, the resulting two pieces unfold subtly, inviting the listener to engage deeply to penetrate them. However, far from inviting a guessing game of identifying sound sources, Cluett’s compositions pull back veils of sonic richness that are both concretely and abstractly engaging. Type II Chrome tapes. Letterpress printed by Fitzgerald Letterpress. Artwork by Michael Bullock and E. Lindorff-Ellery. Edition of 100.

Dais

DAIS 042 Annabelle’s Garden – ‘Time’s No Measure 1987-1993 (Volume 1)’ $24
1452006_618874068158802_103209561_nDais is very, very pleased to announce (after 4 years in the works) that pre-orders are up for the double LP retrospective of late 80’s gothic folk collective, Annabelle’s Garden. Annabelle’s Garden were a radically underground goth-wave/neo-folk band founded in Hamburg, Germany by members of local acts “La Lisa” and “Beyond Despair”, most active between 1987 and 1997. They released cassettes themselves and across indie European labels, music which was eventually compiled and presented to the world in the early and mid-90s on two CD releases by none other than Patrick Leagas (of Death in June & 6Comm/Mother Destruction) on his own lauded Kenaz imprint. Though they played rarely, it was often an event – outdoors, in fields to friends – and their live performances usually made us of all 24 tracks across the soundboard, dozens of instruments (traditional and homemade: rusty cages, rain barrels, etc). Often compared to contemporaries like Death in June, Sol Invictus, or Current 93 (they toured extensively with 6Comm), they managed to create music that existed both in that realm and beyond, labeled as psychedelic, punk, new wave, and goth. You can clearly hear respect given to This Mortal Coil, The Cure, or The Wake – making them as easily filed among classic World Serpent releases as they would fit among 4AD or Factory. The truth is, so little was known about Annabelle’s Garden outside of Europe that not only were their original releases on Kenaz extremely hard to find – you were lucky to even have heard about them to know to search. However – what exists here, in Annabelle’s Garden, is some of the most layered, deep, rich, and nostalgic music Dais has ever uncovered. This gorgeous limited gatefold double LP is comprised of not only the original Kenaz release from 1993: “Wo Sind Nur Eure Götter Hin?”, but also includes tracks from the band’s original first recording and maiden cassette release, as well as a special never before heard remix of their classic anthem “If”. Lovingly included is a full color 12-page booklet with liner notes, detailed track information, and a complete history of the band written by the band themselves, emerging for the first time in almost twenty years to collaborate with Dais. This is the first of a limited series of Annabelle’s Garden in chronological order, bringing forth some of the most rare and gorgeous underground music ever. Limited edition of 500, gorgeous gatefold double LP designed by Eddie O’Dowd (Psychic TV/PTV3, Angry Love) with 12 page booklet and liner notes by Dais and Annabelle’s Garden.

Mantile

Mantile #024 – Posset – ‘Goose Shat Silver Dollars’ C45 £5
tapescan_posset_smallAs for the Goose Shat Silver Dollars, well I was in rural Lincoln visiting my brother who lives down that way. We were having a drink in some country pub (village green, duck pond etc) and all these geese were honking round shitting like mad. I mean really going for it. There were gleaming piles of shit everywhere. And the thing is, goose shit appears to be silver when it first comes out. Stubby silver cylinders like a roll of silver dollars. Tape/Dictaphone Music, Home Recordings. Artwork by Daniel Ward.

Mantile #025 – Simon Werner – ‘The European Manga Demon Looses His tapescan_swerner_smallHead In The Face Of Flowers And Other Suspicious Anthropomorphism’ C25 £5
The European Manga Demon Looses His Head In The Face Of Flowers And Other Suspicious Anthropomorphism is a 3 track polemic – Tracks A1 and B look towards the thematic and visual complexities that manga as art form has to offer, whilst condemning the desexualised, banal morality of disney & co. productions. Track A2 offers reflections on image blogs. Speculative monologues set to lifted and warped beats.

Blackest Rainbow

USURPER – ‘What Time Is It? 1000 Bux.’ LP £15
1000 bux cover greyscaleUsurper hit their 10 year anniversary this year, and to celebrate they went into a studio and dropped a ton of money on this brand new recording for Blackest Rainbow. Personally these two lads are probably my favourite live act in the UK right now. NME recently amended their decision to name the Stones as best live band to Usurper also, so there you go, the music industry has spoken. ‘1000 Bux’ is one hell of a record, Duff and Robertson continue to venture to new levels of the scrape and scratch genre that no one will see coming. There instruments are your everyday objects (maybe even junk). Expect to be confused, amused and probably even bemused. Edition of only 100 hand numbered copies. White sleeves with pasted on artwork on the front and back.
