Valerio Tricoli – ‘Miseri Lares’ 2LP
panact_pan44web1Composed in Berlin and Munich, 2011/2013. A former version of Miseri Lares was originally presented in 2011 at the festival “l’Audible” (Paris), curated by Jerome Noetinger. It has been 7 years since ”Metaprogramming from within the eye of the storm’, thelast solo full length release by Valerio Tricoli. In the years between he hasestablished himself as a formidable presence on the international experimental livecircuit and released acclaimed collaborations with Antoine Chessex, ‘Coi Tormenti’ (Dilemma Records, 2010) and Thomas Ankersmit, ‘Forma II’ (PAN, 2011) along with the fifth full length release by his band with fellow Italiancohorts 3/4HadBeenEliminated, ‘Oblivion’ (Die Schachtel, 2010). Throughout theseshows, collaborations and ongoing explorations Valerio has developed upon hissignature style of beautifully unsettling Musique Concrète. The result of his tirelessexplorations, ‘Miseri Lares’ is his magnum opus, a multilayered and heavilynuanced work which epitomises the uncanny in the realm of sound. ‘Miseri Lares’ explores a variety of interlocking themes and sonic tapestries thatcombine in a quietly disturbing and deeply existential work. As a contemporarytake on Musique Concrète Tricoli utilises his full explorations of the Revox taperecorder alongside digital processing whilst retaining all of the mystery andsurprise elements found in the classic approach of pioneers such as Bernard Parmegiani, Eugeniusz Rudnik and Michel Chion. Themes of the internal, represented by both the psychological and the physical, play throughout the record. A mind lays waste to it’s own self abasement the immediate surrounds (casa or ‘home’) feeds on the collapse of the individual. As a symbol of spirits preying on the grief within, haunting wisps of sound swirl around a throbbing bass in ‘Hic Labor Ille Domus et Inextricabilis Error’, whereas ‘La Casa Deviata’ emphasises the paranoid structure as looming creaks make way for abandoned pipes and a cloud of escaping water. Here, the tension at play is injected with a treated dictaphone recording: “Tell me what happened”,”I can’t remember… THE SMELL!!! There was a tape recorder, where is the tape”? Spoken text (Italian and English) appears throughout the record, mostly as texture or as a dehumanised floorboard A play on the albums themes of the psychological, emotional and irrational horror within. Texts by Italian poets Dante and Guido Ceronetti appear alongside excerpts from The Ecclesiastes (in hebrew, Qohelet), H.P. Lovecraft, E. M. Cioran, and writings by Tricoli himself. These add an extra weight to the recording, making it reminiscent of Robert Ashley or even the comedic tragedy of later day Scott Walker (baritone aside). Valerio Tricoli’s release for PAN adds another piece to the puzzle of narrative based concrete music, yet deviating from all conventional forms and playing out like a literary form of unsettling sound sculpture. The 2xLP is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, pressed on 140g vinyl. It is packaged in a pro-press jacket which itself is housed in a silkscreened pvc sleeve with with photography by Traianos Pakioufakis and artwork by Bill Kouligas.

DBA133 True Neutral Crew – ‘#POPPUNK’
True Neutral Crew is Daveed Diggs of clipping. (Sub Pop), Brian Kinsman formerly of Foot Village (Northern Spy, Not Not Fun, Fat Cat), Margot Padilla of I.E. (Deathbomb Arc), and Signor Benedick The Moor. Their 2nd mixtape was released digitally over the weekend. As with their first mixtape, ‘#MONSANTO’, the group continues to combine their interests in both rap and postpunk/noise rock for results they half-jokingly call “krautrap”. This particular iteration is far more ecstatic than their first outing though. The title ‘#POPPUNK’ refers to the ghost possessing this collection of songs. Hiding beneath swathes of noise and big beat production are bright, joyous melodies and driving live drums. Quick and acrobatic rap verses are bookended with catchy pop hooks. At once both intricate and complex while still being simple and silly. While the krautrap aspirations from their debut mixtape remain, the spirit of hyperactive LA artpunk groups like Oingo Boingo and Sparks is likely behind the haunting. Why the unusual set of inspirations though? Is it mere instinct? Is it all a riddle? Is it nonsense? Perhaps the best advice for deciding comes from the lyrics of the opening track, “It’s modern art. When you see it, see it for what it is.” ‘#POPPUNK’ welcomes a bunch of guests including Glasgow rapper diss1, industrial noise group Robedoor, Venezuelan balladeer Algodón Egipcio, beatpunk godfather Boo Hiss, pianist/composer Lauren Bousfield (ex-Nero’s Day At Disneyland), and noise-soul pioneer S.R. Cano (tik///tik).

Gem Jones – ‘Admiral Frenchkiss’
Gem_Jones_FrontRecored in Dexter, Iowa to four-track portastudio. Admiral Frenchkiss is a Midwest bonanza of sweaty post-Prince stylistics. Gem Jones plays full-band jammers, piano key laments, dub-inflected anthems, and damaged rock discharges, buoyed by a nimble funk finesse that belies his bedroom esthetix. As with all my favorite music, it’s hard to tell where private feelings end and affected put-ons begin. Gem Jones belts out lyrics like he really means them. His demented guitar solos are like teenboys flailing around basements with raw testoid delirium. Nonetheless, Gem’s delicate zigzag between postures carries a whiff a sly parody–a balladeer peeking out the corner of his eye, gauging the vibe, and shapeshifting accordingly.

PHR-110 FRANCE SAUVAGE – ‘Το Μικρό Κορίτσι από τον Υπόνομο’ CDR
phr-110francesuavage400Recorded in Athens, Greece and edited the very same night, this mini album captures perfectly the cold atmosphere of a band being abroad, visiting a studio they’ve never seen before for just one session and create something that urges to be more free than usual. The concrete trio of France Sauvage (Manuel Duval, Arno Bruil and Johann Mazé) uses modular synthesizers, field recordings, contact mics, chants and numerous junk sources in the direct, in-your-face tradition of France’s experimental scene and this album is really close to how these three interact at a non-local show of them: Energetic, raw, adventurous, focused. The english translation of the title is “The Little Girl from the Sewer” and could not be more accurate for the feelings which bloom while listening to this album. Edition of 60 copies w/ paste-on artwork and and obi strip on heavy cardstock folder.

Gardland – ‘Improvisations’ LP
Following the great unspooling of 2013’s Syndrome Syndrome, Gardland and RVNG Intl. step back into the duo’s not-so-distant past with Improvisations, three live performances ripped from local Austrailan radio show, Spiral Sounds, in early 2012. The aural impetus behind the artists and label joining forces, this triptych of tone lashed tracks captures the duo in exhilarating, uninhibited form. Blondes – ‘Rewire’
For their new Rewire EP, Blondes invite a crew of like-melted souls to remix selections from Swisher. Simian Mobile Disco, Huerco S., Claro Intelecto and Function redefine Sam and Zach’s work in their respective expansive dance floor lexicons. Huerco S. regurgitates “Wire” into heaving voodooist rhythms, remarkably unwashed compared to the marbled detail of Claro Intelecto’s sculptural sonics. Function reduces “Wire” into a meditative journey that flirts with the dancefloor, an attraction that catalyzes Simian Mobile Disco’s take on “Swisher” into more narrow and drum-focused terrain.

Nommos – ‘Live at Le Poisson Rouge’

Tredici Bacci – ‘The Thirteen Kisses Cassetta’ C32
Tredici Bacci is 14-piece group of young musicians from Boston, Massachusetts under the impressive orchestral direction of Simon “Luxardo” Hanes, perhaps best known for his madman bass playing in Guerilla Toss. Their debut “cassetta” serves as a celebration of a musical era, fostered by a unique, exciting, and rapidly changing time in history. Tredici Bacci harnesses the essence of classic 1960’s and 1970’s Italian film score music, bathing in the luscious tunes contained within Commedia all’italiana, Giallo slasher, and Spaghetti Western soundtracks. Hanes makes excellent use of traditional orchestration techniques in these pieces, creating a vast sound by employing emotive strings, breezy winds, and an extremely in-the-pocket notated rhythm section. Hanes also beautifully employs the use of the soloist as a thematic melodic voice, with rich, beautiful trumpet playing from Jake Baldwin complimenting the sultry vocals of Sami Stevens. No instrument is ever overpowering and each one plays it’s role perfectly, fitting together seamlessly against the meditative rhythms and varying tempos. There’s a tremendous amount of range in these pieces, from the sensitive and melancholy to the playful and upbeat – at times the music conveys an air of classy sophistication, and at other times it’s drenched in cheap perfume and prurience. This balance of cosmopolitan elegance and steamy funk is what makes “The Thirteen Kisses Cassetta” shine, calling upon all the juiciest elements of orchestral jazz, lounge, pop psychedelia, softcore soundtracks, library music, and the romantic spirit of classic film scores in the vein of Armando Trovaioli, Ennio Morricone, and Bruno Nicolai. Laplante/Dunn/Smith – ‘Ancestral Instrument’ C60
“Ancestral Instrument” documents the musical meeting of three friends: Travis Laplante (Little Women, Battle Trance), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, John Zorn), and Ches Smith (Marc Ribot, Secret Chiefs 3, Fred Frith). Existing in the cracks of avant-garde jazz, contemporary classical, indigenous world music, and soul, “Ancestral Instrument” captures an evening of improvisation that took place at IBEAM, a small loft space in Brooklyn, on December 14th, 2013. There was a fierce snowstorm that night, and only a handful of people trudged through the brutal weather to attend the concert. IBEAM served as an oasis, a respite from the cold, with people literally coming into the room to thaw out. This was the first time the three musicians gathered together in a classic saxophone trio formation (tenor saxophone, double bass, drums), and also marks Laplante’s recorded debut in a purely improvised setting. Before the concert began, the musicians established an unspoken agreement that the music would have no expectations, nothing to prove, and no style to fill – only that its sounds should be followed. “Ancestral Instrument” is a document of this sound, a talisman of the thawing that took place that evening.
